OS X :: How To Retrieve Mail Settings
Mar 13, 2010
I have 2 hard drives - internal 250gb ( running SnowLeopard ) and external 160gb ( running Leopard ).
Recently, my logic board failed - and I took out my internal drive, so I could boot off GF's Macbook and carry on working while the MBP was getting fixed.
For some reason when using the Macbook - all my settings went from Mail - and I had to re-enter all my accounts. When I did this, I couldn't get all my accounts up, and the ones that did had some files and folders missing.

I tried to reorganize my mail by using the advice on a previous post. In effect, all of my mail disappeared. Any ideas on how to retrieve my mail? Here is the previous post:Okay, here's what I'd do. Close Mail. Go to a folder named Mail in your Home's Library, open it, and drag everything inside it to a new Folder on your Desktop. This means everything (on your computer at least) is backed up.
Now, find a file named com.apple.mail.plist and drag it to the Desktop too.Okay, now when you open Mail, it should be like-new. Put in your .Mac account details again and re-download all your emails. If your problems are Mail-based and not .Mac-based, this should have solved them. Good luck and tell me if there are bits you don't like in what I've said and I'll try to make it clearer.

Suddenly my 'Mail' program does not 'Get Mail' when I clik the button or choose the command in the menu. Nothing happens, no sign of downloading anything.Â
But the red dot on the Dock icon shows I have 8000+ unread messages.Â
I haven't added any new software or upgraded the OS for a number of days. Worked OK this morning. I've tried restarting both the program and the computer.Â

Is there a way I can retrieve my mac mail password? I keep getting asked for it but I've forgotten what it is as I haven't had to use it for years. I've tried keychain but I have no mail password in it. I tried using the same password as my isp's webmail, which I never use, but it didn't work.Â

My wife typed a very long email message, but did not have the recipient's address correct. Immediately upon sending it, she got the form Unable to Send information. She looked in her Sent folder, but I guess since the message was not technically sent, it does not appear. Is there any way to retrieve the very long email she typed rather than starting over?

Occasionally when I am composing a message in Mail (Version 4.3), I accidentally hit a key that deletes a whole sentence. Is there a way I can retrieve this sentence or do I have to start over? In my old Outlook Express on my Dell pc, I could arrow back to find anything that accidentally deleted while composing.

Mail has worked flawlessly for me for several years. But this week, it stopped loading (retrieving) my messages from my .mac/me/iCloud service. For some reason, my .mac account in Mail is offline. When I try to take it back online, mail tells me that my password isn't being accepted. (But it works just fine if I go to my iCloud account and use it to log on and check my mail there. And it's no prob retrieving my mail on my iPhone, either.)
(I have several other e-mail accounts set up in Mail, and they work just fine. Only my .mac/me/iCloud account stopped working.) I've tried to change various settings in the preferences for the account, but it's been to no avail. Some of the various error messages I've received after trying to fix the prob: And here are info panels I see when I check the account in Mail's preferences: Note how port 993 is greyed out here; it's not greyed out for my other email accounts (and it's the same port w/ those, too).

I just set up my new iMac, migrated everything from my MacBook Pro, and everything works EXCEPT Mail. I have configured my MobileMe settings to synch everything, and online, everything is there: contacts, all old email, etc... but Mail doesn't show any of this stuff, nor will it retrieve or synch any of my email accounts. Also, I have to Force Quit it everytime to exit the program.
Could this be something with the Preferences file, or .plist file?

I use Mail to access 4 different email accounts, two of which are Gmail accounts. About a week ago Mail stopped retrieving the messages of one of the accounts. It looks like it is trying to download them in that the little status wheel spins, but nothing happens on that account. I can send mail from it, however it is extremely slow to send. I installed Snow Leopard about two months ago and have had no other problems. Now all of a sudden Mail won't download any of my messages from this Gmail account. I haven't changed any settings, and I can access my mail at [URL] using the net interface and also on my iPhone and there are plenty of new messages there. I don't know what to do.

Is there away to import mail account settings from Thunderbird and/or Outlook Express into Mail? [that is mail.app, to help any one searching later on as Mail is too common a word to search for]. I've imported all my messages correctly but don't know how or if it's possible to import my account settings. Also: I'm in the process of migrating all my e-mails / mail accounts / settings and mail rules from Outlook Express to Mail [Mail.app]. I have successfully got all my e-mails across. I have also managed to convert all the e-mail addresses in the 50+ mail rules, as stored in the Windows registry, from hex into text.
Some of my rules have tens of e-mail addresses which if I had to add in each address separately would be a nightmare. Is there away of block adding in e-mail addresses to Mail? Also is it possible to manually edit the mail rules preference file(s) and insert the e-mail addresses into that? I'm aware I have to manually recreate the rules themselves but that's not so difficult. It's the adding back in of all the e-mail addresses that might be, given the large number that exist.

I've added a Google Apps account to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 few weeks ago to use it in Mail, but I removed it last week. I tried adding it back during the weekend, but I've been getting this error: "Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server domain"Â
This comes after I click "Set Up" and tick Mail only. I don't have 2 step verification enabled for that account and I didn't change any account settings since adding it last time.Â
Also, I can still see the account (as well as other Google account that's currently not added to OS X) in Accounts.plist located in: ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailDataÂ

When I try to change the settings for my Mail app, in Snow Leopard, the incoming mail settings are greyed out. What do I do to be able to change these?Â
(I had a problem, with my Mail account, which a consultant fixed for me on my laptop. But I cannot remember what he did to access the incoming mail server preferences, and make the changes, because on my desktop these are still greyed out.)

before I get started I want to say that I read all of the threads pertaining to this issue and I cannot come to a conclusion as to what I can do to resolve this issue. I bought my wife a 15" Macbook Pro for the holidays and she's a recent convert to Mac OS. As I was tutoring her on the basics, we proceeded on setting up her email account through Gmail with the Mail app. What I also did was delete my own account on my iMac so I can set it up together with her while she watched me do it and sure enough, when it was all said and done, our mail accounts were set up but now I had new folders that I've never seen before. Mail no longer gave me the option to choose POP and set up IMAP by default instead. This led me to finding out that if I held down the Alt/Option key during the account setup, it then gave me the option to use a POP setting. Everyone says that IMAP is a much better solution and I ultimately want to move away from POP but Mail keeps downloading ALL of my emails that dates back at least a month. Sometimes this takes a least 7 to 8 minutes as I have some large attachments from previous recipients and it bogs down my network. Keep in mind that it doesn't matter if I delete all of them, they still re-download when I relaunch the Mail app. How in the hell do I sort all of this out? I've gone into my Gmail settings and checked off the proper protocols for POP settings when I use POP and then proper IMAP settings for that as well. It's just so confusing for me to have all of those Gmail folders on the left hand side. I just want to be able to delete an email forever without Mail acting up. Is this a server issue with Gmail or a problem with Mail itself? I do not want to use Thunderbird because Mail is perfectly integrated enough with the OS for me.

When I try to add a Nokia Mail account in the mail app for Mac, Iphone or Ipad, the app does not know the SMTP and IMAP server settings for Nokia Mail. It prompts me to enter the IMAP and SMTP server settings manually, which is not fun. It will be nice if Nokia Mail server settings were easily discoverable by the Mail app. What is the process to update the Mail settings server so that any Nokia Mail user in the future when adding his/her account does NOT have to manually enter the server settings? Have MacPro with dual-boot. Snow Leopard, which I'm using right now, and Yosemite, which I'm setting up and trying out. Mail is a particular issue.Â
I would like to have the Yosemite mail set to "mail.comcast.net" but there is no real way to do so.Â
When I put in my e-mail address and Comcast password, it automatically sets up an imap account, which I do not want.Â
I want the system to pull ALL messages off the server when I collect my mail, and store NOTHING on the Comcast mail servers.Â
Snow Leopard does this (of course, it's a POP account I set up) but the fine Apple developers seem to think I want to 'keep my devices synchronized' so Yosemite's Mail program chooses imap for me.Â
I had the test set to pull down all the messages and it did, on the imap account, so ostensibly when I rebooted into 10.6 there should have been nothing left on the server for the mail to collect - but there's all of today's messages and the junk mail waiting to be pulled down - so obviously the IMAP isn't emptying the server when I collect mail.Â
HOW do I get Yosemite Mail to let me setup my Comcast account on the POP settings? I checked on the Advanced settings for the Internet Accounts but it makes you set up the password *first* so goes out and checks, then automatically loads the wrong account type.Â
Do I take the computer offline so it cannot automatically set itself up, then enter the account info?Â

I have a forwarding email address that I give out to everyone as my main address - it saves hassle with different addresses, changing of ISP and instances such as the Apple shift to Mobile Me. However, I want to set-up MobileMe so that my forwarding address appears as the from address in emails. How can I do this? I've tried to add it as one of the addresses in the Mail app Preferences pane but this seems to create a problem with sending.

How do I move my e-mail, settings, folders etc. from the Windows Mail application in Vista to Mac Mail? I've exported everything from Windows Mail and tried importing it to Mac Mail, but the only options I have are to import from Thunderbird, Eudora, Entourage and a few others. Windows Mail isn't listed. I've heard Entourage can handle that, but has anyone had experience with doing this? Most of the searching I've done on this subject pertains to Outlook and Outlook Express.
