OS X :: How To Delete An Item From Downloads Folder
Dec 21, 2010
Is there a way to delete an item from my downloads folder that is in my dock without dragging it to the trash? Is there a way to get a context menu on items in the downloads folder?
i Have over 40 gigs of files in my downloads folder (a lot of which is music) Is it safe to delete this folder? should i do something first? get an app to do it for me?
I couldn't find any resolve from anyone on this topic in older forums, but I have the folder generated and backed up on my iMac and my backup drive, a DROBO. I managed to get rid of the lost+found items on the iMac, but the DROBO says "The operation cant be completed because the item dir_1558208 is in use." as well as the rest of the contents.
my iTunes 10.6.1 on OS X 10.7.3 has been telling me 'you have 1 item awaiting download' for the last 3 or four days.but, when i select '1 iTunes download available' in download or 'download now' in iTunes account or Store/Check for Available Downloads, nothing downloads and the message remains.i've tried downloading a free tv episode to clear the count or reset the count. it says 2 downloads availabe and the free episode does indeed download. then the message goes back to 1 available.
I don't have access to the marketplace forum here (not enough posts), I don't want to support ebay/paypal if I can avoid it, and I live in a smaller market area so craigslist is a bit iffy does anyone have any suggestions on avenues where I might be able to easily sell a Mac Pro-related item?
If it were an iMac or MacBook related item, no problem but the Mac Pro isn't as popular a product, so finding someone interested seems like it might be more difficult.
In preparation for the end of iDisk, I would like to delete all my documents. I have one file in the Documents folder that I am unable to delete. After moving the file to the trash, and confirming that I want to delete it, I get a message stating "The operation can't be completed because the item "personal.doc" is in use."How to delete this file? The format is a password protected Word document.

I am working on clearing off some hard drive space, and my first step was to remove some unneeded items from an external HD to make some space there. When I drag the folder I'm trying to delete to the trash, I first get a message that the items will be immediately deleted (I think because my internal HD is quite full?) and that's fine because I do want to delete these, so I say OK. It starts the process of deleting, and counting how many files it's deleting, then gives me a message that the operation cannot be completed because item "xx" is locked. The only solutions I have found on here involve unlocking "xx" but my problem is, when I search the computer and/or the external for item "xx" nothing is found. I'm really not sure if the issue with item "xx" is an issue with the drive or with the computer, or what to do about it?? If it's the drive, I suppose I could back up what I do want to save from the drive then re-format it?

I cannot delete all the trash from my mac. I get the message "Cannot delete because item cache.db is in use". All but 3 remaining folders were deleted. These won't go away.
I didn't use the migration assistant, since I wanted to change some key things. What I did do, was copy some old folders from my old mac to my new mac. Oddly enough, during this change, the permissions on these files got locked. Now, since I'm logged in as admin, I can unlock these files and change the permissions, but there's a lot of items and subfolders within this one folder, that I've had to change them all one by one so far. Is there a way, either through finder, or through the terminal that I can just change every item within the one folder at the same time
I found that he installed an access in Keychain to my Time Capsule showing its password when he replaced my HD. When I try to delete it I am denied on my password. When I try to create a new Keychain my password is denied, so I cannot create a new Keychain and delete the old one— if that would work in this situation. I have some other issues with this dealer, an old one predating the Apple Stores. I don't like to go back to him to find out how I can get him out of my computer.
I just bought the disc from apple, updated my computer to snow leopard, and am confused by this question mark. I have highlighted it with a red box for your viewing ease. What does it mean? It says "Item can't be found" when I click it.
When I save a file out of Mail to a local folder, it's not showing anymore! I make a new folder, save files to it out of Mail, and when I view the folder contents in the finder, it's not showing any files!
It's the same whether I save the mail as Rich text or Plain text. If I save as raw email, it saves it, but when I do a search, it only finds the file in Mail and not in that folder?
I have a few items in my downloads stack, but 3 of them that don't exist in the folder anymore are just sitting there. I can try and move em out but i get the "circle with a slash" thing. And if i drag them to the trash, nothing happens. If i click on them to open it says "application cannot be found"
I accidentally deleted my "downloads" stack, so I dragged the "downloads" folder from my home directory into the dock. Lo and behold, the stack came back...but not the way I remembered it. Everything was "backwards" if I tried to sort by "date added". Normally, the most recent downloads are at the bottom; however, now it is backwards. I didn't lose any files, but it is very annoying! I Googled this issue and it seemed like trashing the dock plist would solve the problem. I did that, logged out, and logged back in, and it sure did reset all of the dock settings to their defaults - everything, of course, EXCEPT for the downloads stack! It did more harm than good - all of my icons are out of place now, and yet I am still having the same old "backwards" issue with the downloads stack. Does anyone know where this problem actually lies?
I was downloading my senior pictures from the photographers website when suddenly I don't know what I did but the downloads folder disappeared from my dock! I got it back (I think...there is this little blue folder that says "downloads") But now when I download an image it won't go into that little folder on the dock. The little box pops up like it used to to show the progress of the download but it doesn't show the tiny loading bar in the little folder in the dock and when it is finished downloading it does not appear in the folder in the dock!
I have a folder with mulitple subfolders. Each one has a different number of files in it. I want to use Automator or Applscript to summarize the contents into a text file or email:
folder 1 name / number of items folder 2 name / number of items folfder 3 name / number of items etc.
I've got an issue where I have a bunch of .zip.part files in my downloads stack, which I cannot remove (I do not know how to remove a file directly from the stack, perhaps there's a way?) because when I open the downloads folder in finder, they aren't there.
