Where did the other gigs go? Is it possible someone installed a hidden disk partition and this accts for the missing 3 gigs? What can I do to locate the hidden disk partition? View 8 RepliesI have a 1TB external LaCie hard drive. Presently, it is loaded with about 300GBs of space so I should have around 650GBs left. However, it is only showing about 240GBs left. I think the problem is that I used to use this hard drive for Time Machine backups, I deleted them via the recycle bin. I checked the recycle bin, nothing there. I verified the disk, everything ok, I repaired it as well. I even erased the empty space.

Well I have a Western Digital hard drive. It is a 1TB drive that I used for Time machine a few times. Today I went to wipe the drive and deleted a few movies and my backups. The only file left is less than a GB. But it still only shows 595.16GB. In time machine it says 595.2GB available out of 9xxGB. Where did all the space go?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.
I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband. Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?

I have the MacBook Pro 2010 13" and recently I've noticed my disc space is slowly decreasing with use.
Im not downloading files or anything, but today I lost around 600 MB of space, I just kept opening my Finder to discover less and less disc space each time.
Is this normal or do I have a problem, this is the first time I've noticed it in the month and a half I've owned the machine.
I have a 500 GB LaCie hard drive that I bought 11 months ago, so its still under warranty. It's formated with two partitions on it: Time Machine Backups and Storage which are both 250 GB. I also have windows installed on my mac via bootcamp and i have a program installed called MacDrive which allows me to view the contents of my mac hard drive and external hard drive.
Ok, so about a week ago, my hard drive wouldn't mount on my mac. I couldn't see it in Disk Utility or the Finder. It's not making any weird noises and sounds like its running normally, so i don't think anything is physically wrong with the hard drive. I booted up windows and plugged it in and this is what happened.

I pressed OK and windows asked me what I'd like to do with the two partitions. I chose "Open files in folder" or whatever that option is and i can see my files, open them, and copy them, even the time machine partition. But when i go to my computer and click one of the partitions, it shows this.

This EVEN shows on the Macintosh HD which worked fine before. So, does anyone know what the problem is? Should I try reformatting the external hard drive in windows? Should I reinstall MacDrive?
When I start my macbook If I don't hold the options key it goes straight to an apple than circle with line through it. If I hold options key I get two hard drives one that says just hard drive one that says windows. Windows seems to work fine other than the missing drivers for the Ethernet, wireless airport, and a few others. I have tried everything. I for some reason cannot get to the mac side. It doesn't even show up and nothing relating to bootcamp shows up. I split the partitions 35G to windows the rest to "mac" side. I would be just as happy with installing the drivers if I could get them installed I know very little about Mac's and should have left well enough alone.

After awhile, it went back down to 0kb. I really don't want to get a new HD, because for some reason my Tiger disk won't read, so that's a little pricey there for both a new HD and Tiger.

On windows it can not recognize the driver to mount but on mac nothing! I even tried external power, different USB leads and a new one. Still nothing. I think it may have become corrupt.

On reboot I got the flashing folder with question mark meaning it couldn't find the OS. I tried to access the drive remotely from target mode but it wasn't listed. Trying to turn on FileVault I get a message saying:
There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on FileVault. Turning on FileVault requires an additional 132.2 GB of free space on the volume "Macintosh HD". Try emptying the Trash or deleting files you don't need.
Finder says that hard drive "Macintosh HD" has a capacity of 499.76 GB and that 180.42 GB are available. Am I to understand that to run FileVault I would need 312.62 GB (132.2 + 180.42 GB) empty on a 499.76 GB hard drive?! Seems crazy! Might this be related to Parallels 6 or something?
When you bought your MBP how much space did you have available out of the box. My 80 gig hardrive has a capacity of 74.21 and I never checked how much was used when I bought it. Reason I am asking is, I have 42.4 gigs left and I cant figure out where all that space went. I can account for 9 gigs worth of itunes music and videos, and maybe another 4 or so gigs of other stuff. What about the rest? How do I check if I have a HUGE plist file or something?

When I bought leopard and installed it I was left with about 3 gigs on my hard drive so I deleted final cut studio 2 and Adobe Photoshop, however when I did this I checked my free space on my hard drive and it didn't free up anything and I know that it should have given me over 60 gigs of free space.

And these are my files and their size with take 49.22 giga of space, I don't see where is the rest of the disk space. I believe it is in the "Other" but how can I access it to free the not needed items.

I put the leopard install disk into my computer and started installing it. It went fine until it asked me where to install Leapord. With all other installs (applications, games, etc...) my hard drive will show up and that's what I'll click on, but here nothing shows up except my iPod that was plugged in. As a note, it worked on my other computers, but is not working on my G5.

He said that he made a second partition for Windows; however, the drive showed only one partition formatted with NTFS. I tried reinstalling mac os using the disk that came with the laptop. When it came time to choose the destination drive, none showed up. I then went to Disk Utility. The drive and the volume showed up in the left panel but I could not Erase or do anything else - all the options were grayed out. With no firewire port I am also unable to use target mode.

This could have been the case for awhile, I don't use it that often just as storage. I have restarted, unplugged and replugged many ways. I can hear it running and the light is on. It does not show up in the system profiler, I have reset the PRAM. I have not as of yet got new cables to try as this was discovered last night. Is there anything else I can try until I get new cables? Or what does this sound like to you. Also, what are the chances that the information on my drive is gone? This is the only copy I have for some work that I do.
