OS X :: Forced Shut Down Now Hard Drive Has Vanished?

Apr 25, 2010

Black 2006 Macbook, running 10.5.8. Refurb so no restore discs, but a retail copy of Leopard.

I did something truly stupid, I was reading on here about selecting different libraries when opening up iTunes. I thought hey I'll see if I can bring up my Power Mac G5 iTunes library (also running 10.5.8, where all my music is kept) and have it in a full library rather than the home network sharing option which doesnt have artwork etc.

Anyway...

I hit shift+alt when opening iTunes and navigated through my shared folder to the PM's music folder and selected the library file. iTunes bounced for a bit then the whole thing just hung. Stayed in a beachball and wouldn't let me force quit either. So I held the power button down and did a forced shut down. When I booted it back up it took me the grey screen with a flashing folder and question mark.

I popped in the Leopard retail disc and booted from that, opened up disc utility to find my harddrive has completely vanished, the only thing showing is the optical drive.

Ive tried:

Booting into target disc mode with the Macbook connected through Firewire to the G5... the G5 sees it in shared, as the computer name that I gave it (which must mean there's something there if my settings have been stored?!?), but fails to connect. It did connect as 'VNC' once. But there was nothing in the folder.
Tried resetting the PRAM.. not sure that would do anything but I thought why not, chimed twice but still doesn't see the hard disc in Disc Utility.

Booted with D to force the Macbook to boot from the internal, it just stays on a grey screen forever.

Tried to select startup disc but the only things listed are the Leopard install disc and a network boot. Also tried going ahead with a leopard install, my stuffs backed up on disc and the G5 so I dont mind a clean install, just want it to work again! No drive listed to install to though.

Any thoughts at all?! Can't believe I managed to destroy it with a tiny action!

IMac (Intel) :: Files Have Vanished From 1TB Hard Drive

Sep 2, 2014

I own a 2011 iMac OSX 10.9.4 that has a 250GB ssd and a 1TB hard drive built into it. I take a lot of photos, so usually I copy all of them into the 1TB hard drive for storage. A few days ago I wanted to look through some old pictures and found that all my files from after mid 2012 have completely vanished. There is no trace of any updates to this hard drive after mid 2012. I know I did not misplace these photos because I frequently place new folders in the hard drive and view old memories. When I went to place more folders in, I noticed the amount of folders decreased drastically.

I've tried searching for the photos in the search bar and scrolling through "All My Files", and they are just not there. I've also tried revealing any hidden folders through Terminal. There are no folders with a modification date past mid 2012. The thing is, everything in the SSD hard drive appears normal and updated, only the 1TB hard drive has reverted back to a 2012 state. Is there any way to retrieve the files? Months of work and photos are gone. How could this have happened? And how can I prevent this from happening in the future?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: External Hard Drive Icon Vanished After Update

May 12, 2012

I have updated to OSX.7.4 but but now my external hard drive icons have disappeared from my desktop? The disks are recognized in disk utility and the "show external disks" is ticked in Finder Prefs. Disk Utility did show some errors in 2 or 3 of the disks which have been corrected. It is just since updating to the latest version of Lion this has happened. They are linked via eSATA cables and are in two Sonnet containers (4 hard drives in each). CF cards show up OK. My back up Chronosync, fails to run as it does not recognise the disks.

OS X :: IMac 10.5.7 - Frozen On Restart - Forced Shut Down

May 13, 2009

I downloaded Mac OS X 10.5.7 from the Apple website rather than using Software Update only to save time. I used Software Update to get 10.5.7 on my MacBook Pro and it took 35 minutes to download the package. Using the Apple website for my iMac, the download took about 15 minutes.

I then began the installation of 10.5.7 on the iMac. Everything went fine until it was time to restart. The computer froze on restart. I had to hold down the power button to turn off the iMac. Then I started it up and it began to load for quite a while (normal after an update). Then I logged in and went to "About This Mac" and it read that I had Mac OS X 10.5.7.

Obviously, this is an unorthodox way of updating. But am I safe with this method? Was it just a minor glitch?

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? Is my only option restarting my computer or is there some way to reset it (without losing my preferences)?

Mac Pro :: Hard Drive Odd Clicking Sound While Shut Down/stand By?

Dec 27, 2010

I have a general question about a recently upgraded 2006 Mac Pro.

I recently upgraded my boot drive to a 1TB Western Digital 7200RPM sata drive.

I have a 2.66GHz Mac Pro late 2006. Running leopard. 4Gb Ram. Radeon 4870 HD (recently added). two other sata drives as backup. (200GB and 350GB, about 4 years old)

With the new drive I notice an odd clicking sound when ever I shut it down or send it into standbye.

Like the drive is just stopping instead of spinning down... I have heard that this can cause permanant drive failure... Is this an issue I need to be concerned with?

Power Mac G5 :: Hard Drive Loud And Shut Down Computer Message

Dec 3, 2007

This morning the hard drive on my G5 sounded like it was at 8000 rpm's and there was a message on my screen to shut down the computer using the power button. I did this. Now anytime I try to power back up, I get the white screen with the apple and the "booting" icon, which then goes to a blue screen with the same icon, which then is just the blue screen with my mouse icon floating around. Also, on the random occasion, after booting to the blue screen it takes me to a DOS looking screen that asks for my login and password, of which I have neither.

Hardware :: Recover Data From Dead Lacie Hard Drive / Unable To Mount Hard Drive

Sep 6, 2009

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.

Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.

Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.

I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

MacBook Pro :: Audiable Click Sound Of Hard Drive / Protection Of The Hard Drive Dropped?

Sep 1, 2009

Got a new MBP last month to replace my white MacBook - loving it as an upgrade but one gripe - if I'm sat using it on my knee I regularly hear the "click" type noise of what I imagine is the protection of the hard drive because it thinks it is being dropped.

I never heard this on my old Mac and while it's not a huge issue it is a bit disconcerting, as though I'm being told off for moving it in a fairly responsible way.

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Not Working / Logic Board Unable To Communicate With Hard Drive

Sep 9, 2009

My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.

The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

MacBook :: Migrating Contents Of Hard Drive To New One / Hard Drive Has Partition For Bootcamp?

Jul 27, 2009

I have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?

If this is possible at all, how can I go about doing so? If there are steps laid out somewhere, I'd appreciate a referral. Sorry if my question is a little elementary, but I did a search on these forums and also google and nothing really came up

MacBook Pro :: Cloning Entire Hard Drive To An External Hard Drive

Mar 31, 2012

Recently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

MacBook Pro :: After Installing New Hard Drive - Previous Hard Drive Is Failed

Sep 9, 2014

Macbook Pro 17" Early 2011

Notes. Failed HDD ASD Test.  A new hard drive was installed in September of 2011 after the previous hard drive failed. Having worked well until now the system seems to give the same problems as it had previously.  I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue as others have pointed out.

I have been told by the technician my only option is to replace the entire hard drive again for the second time with a new one. However to my understanding a ASD test is very specific and this my not be necessary? Further I am attempting a final backup just in case. I don't have to take it in where I could just back it up myself without the system shutting down.

OS X :: My Post-it Notes Have Been Vanished?

Feb 6, 2009

Like Milton without his stapler, I am enduring quite a profound sense of loss, here.

My entire dashboard is literally filled with post-it notes. Or was. When I booted my computer, this morning, I discovered that about half of my notes were totally blank. Thinking a reboot might solve the problem and return to me my precious mini memoranda, I promptly restarted. Wrong move.

Having just booted up once more, I returned to my dashboard to find that only two of my yellow friends contained the precious knowledge they once possessed.

OS X :: Desktop And Privileges Vanished?

Sep 12, 2009

I have an iMac with 10.4.11 on it that I've been using since 2006. Everything has been fine and dandy until earlier today when I decided to restart my computer after trying to get Adobe to work, and when I logged back in, my desktop background and all my icons were missing...it was as if I had turned my computer on for the first time.

Now all the files are still on the computer, I just can't access them. Anytime I try to click on "Documents" or certain other folders, I get a message saying I can't access them because I don't have "sufficient access privileges". I tried checking my account in the system preferences, but I am still listed as admin and am the only user anyway. I also tried repairing disk permissions under the Disk Utility tool, then restarting after that and I'm still having the same problem.
