OS X :: Flash Performance In Snow Leopard In Different Browsers?
Aug 30, 2009
I just noticed that playing YouTube Video in Safari or Google Chrome the CPU usage is not less than 70-75 % on both cores ( MacBook 2.4ghz unibody with SL 10A432 32bit kernel ).
On Firefox the CPU usage on the same YouTube video is no more than 40-45% on both cores.
Anyone else notice this ?
I guess it may happen because flash plugin is 32 bit and used in some sort of sandbox in Safari now because Safari is 64bit and flash plugin is 32 bit ( in Chrome everything run in sanbox and I got the same CPU usage on Leopard ).
Firefox is 32 bit application as Flash is and I'm guessing thats why it uses less CPU.

Anyone noticed extremely choppy flash performance? I use Safari as my browser, and in Leopard YouTube videos (for example) were smooth and fine. Now in Snow Leopard flash is very choppy indeed.

When logging out of user accounts, my browsers are not quitting properly (I'm getting the spinning beachball) and I have to force quit them to complete logging out of the accounts. It happens whether I'm using Safari 5.1.7 or Firefox 13.01. I haven't noticed it happening with any other open apps. It doesn't happen every time either.
Info:iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Safari 5.1.7, Firefox 13.01

I had some updates for my Macbook Pro (snow leopard- up to date) and for some reason now I can't open pdfs on the web on either safari or firefox. If I download them it works, but I can't view them on the acutal browser anymore. When I open a website that is the link to the pdf it just pulls up a black page- that's it, you refresh it refreshes the same thing. I reinstalled Adobe reader (I use Preview though) and still nothing. I don't kow *** is going on.

I searched for this, but I have not been able to find any solution to the issue of Flash freezing browsers on Leopard. A number of people seem to be having this issue with Flash 10.
I have a MacBook with 10.5.6 and all updates, and the latest flash from Adobe.
Using Safari or Firefox, I am unable to display sites with flash. For example, when going to [URL] the page begins to load, and hangs at the end, with a spinning cursor. Only option is to force quit.
Deleting flash allows the page to display, but obviously w/o flash.
Reinstalling flash (version 9 or 10), brings back the freeze.
Other machines I have (MBP) with the same software, work fine.
Creating a new user has the same issue.
Restart, and Repairing permissions has no effect...
Everything was working fine last night, and nothing significant has changed since then.

I have a new 13" macbook pro. I updated to the new flash and now every time I go to a page that contains flash, my browser crashes. I've tried on safari, firefox and I'm currently on Chrome. I have no idea what to do. Everything else works fine it's just when I go on a site containing flash it crashes. I wanted to watch a stream from ustream and every time I went on the site it crashed. I've never been on that site, but I'm guessing they use flash. So, I downloaded the latest flash and now it's even worst. What do I do? The program actually freezes, but I can't do anything so I have to force quit it. Except Chrome I only need to exit the tab, I think.

People are talking about the increased ZFS support in Snow Leopard and how this is great news for SSD's but so far I have not been able to find any figures as to what kind of performance increase we are likely to see.
Does anybody have any idea yet? Maybe through using Solaris or something. Also heard that it will not be possible to boot of a ZFS under OS X, is this true? If so, is there really much point in including it in Snow Leopard?

I installed Snow Leopard recently and have had some really annoying performance issues/ hang ups when running multiple applications.
I had no problems before and activity monitor isn't showing anything out of the ordinary.
2.4gz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2gb 667 mhz ddrs sdram
Late 2008 macbook
Like I said, I've never had any performance issues before this and now I'm getting frequent hang ups when multi-tasking. By hang ups I mean the little spinning wheel pops up and I can't do anything.

Every time I navigate to a page that has Flash elements into it (e.g. YouTube), Safari hangs and my computer beach balls. I can't view any pages with Flash elements in them (or at least pages that have multiple Flash elements) without Safari freezing and causing me to kill Safari through Force Quit.
To try to fix this problem, I reset Safari (resetting every available option), repaired permissions, restarted, and nothing worked. Then I used the Flash uninstaller from Adobe's website to uninstall Flash, then reinstall a fresh copy which did not work.
I reinstalled Snow Leopard, updated all of my system's software, and then tried to view [URL] and the same problem still occurred.
Now I originally thought that the Safari 4.0.4 update caused the problem. However - after I reinstalled Snow Leopard and updated to 10.6.2, I downloaded to Camino to see if YouTube would work, but to my surprise it didn't. The same exact problem I'm having with Safari (entire browser freezing when viewing a page with Flash such as YouTube) is also happening with a 3rd-party browser (Camino).
This leads me to believe that 10.6.2 may be the source of the problem (as I never had this problem with 10.6.1), not the 4.0.4. I cannot go on websites with Flash elements in them, even with a 3rd-party browser.

I getting my copy of SL next from Macmall next week. I am reading some reviews that thou SL is snappier than Leopard, but it seems the application performance is slow compared to Leopard .
I am using applications like MS office 2007, firefox 3.x and parallels with linux & windows. Anybody there who has already installed SL can tell us what do they think about application performance in SL.

Not sure why, but when I run my SL in 64 bit it runs significantly slow when compared to 32-bit on my umbp late 2008 2.4 ghz, 4gb ram and 500gb hdd. when running on 32-bit, my umbp boots in less than 15 sec and loading the native apps are very snappy and responsive (safari/finder/preview, etc). But when I boot in 64-bit. It takes like 45 sec to boot (it keeps spinning the white circle during the boot up) and even loading safari and rendering the default page will take like couple of secs which is noticeably slow and opening pdf in preview is slow and scrolling the pdf is noticeably slow and sometimes hangs and which does not happen in 32-bit mode.
If I click on application folder on the doc, it opens the folder before I release the mouse button in 32-bit mode, but in 64-bit, it takes upto 5 sec to open the folder. I tried this couple of times including rebooting the umbp. It is not crashing in 64 bit, but it is noticeably slow. Which is making me depressed because I was thinking to upgrade this laptop to 6gb ram. Now I am not sure if i want to upgrade.

I have a fairly old imac (it's about three years old) and although I've upgraded the ram, it's feeling a bit sluggish now. Do you think I would experience any performance benefit from upgrading to snow leopard? It still seems like a great machine so can't really justify upgrading to the new imacs.

I have a Macbook 2.4ghz core 2 duo running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and I've been having massive problems when uploading files both on a Wireless and LAN connection. When I try and upload to a site like myspace, facebook or anyother site with uploading options my upload times out and/or crashes the browser for a while (this is for larger files whereas photos don't upload in full). This seems to be primarily with flash/java upload options and happens when using Safari, Firefox and Opera. So far I've re-installed 10.6.2 and repaired disk permissions and also re-installed flash and none of these options makes any difference. I know it's not a network issue as it works perfectly on my 1ghz e-mac running Leopard Anyone got any solutions? It's completely baffled me.

So this is a problem that's been bugging me for half a year or so. Usually, I start up a video on Youtube or the like and for about 2-3 minutes it runs smoothly, but after that, the audio skips a bit (kind of like a record skipping) and the RAM spikes. After the hiccup, it tends to run normally, but after a few seconds, it'll skip again and occasionally, the audio will degrade and all audio played back through the browser sounds heavily distorted until I restart.
I used to run Firefox, but when this problem popped up, I would get this:
so I switched to Opera, which worked for a little while, but the problem came back. I tried Safari and Chrome, but it's still there.

Yesterday, a web site that I use frequently suggested that I upgrade my Flash Player and gave me a link to do so. Ever since I downloaded and installed the new version, any time the Flash starts to load, the browser crashes.
I downloaded the Uninstall for Flash, unintalled it, restarted from my Install Disc and repaired the permissions as suggested. Then I restarted, installed the new version of Flash Player (with all browsers off!) but as soon as I accessed a web site and needed to use Flash, the browser crashed (both Safari and Firefox). Is there a solution or am I just out of luck now?

Since I've heard snow leopard incorporates 64-bit features, does this mean iLife '09 itself will encode movies faster, idvd encode faster etc.? I'm not familiar with 64-bit advantages.

Has anyone ran some tests with the new Snow Leopard Graphics Update Apple just released. I am primarily interested in the performance increases it offers SC2. I am at work and will not be able to install it until late tonight, after which I will post before and after FPS and settings for SC2.

I recently had to upgrade my OS to 10.6 (then to 10.6.8 via update). After the upgrade fro 10.5 though my computer had been running slow, especially safari. I haven't do anything different besides running the update. The only new program(s) I have is Diablo 3 which I know tkes up a lot of processing power, but that wouldn't explain the overall, extreme drop in speed when I'm not playing it.

So macrumors peeps, as the title reads, whenever i open a web browser and go to either espn or youtube or anything that flash associates itself with, the windows hangs or freezes and the beachball cursor comes up forcing me to force quit. I am currently using a Macbook 10.5.8 and Firefox 3.6.3 and Safari 4.0.5. Also i have restarted my macbook, updated it completely, tried reinstalling Adobe Flash Plug-in, done the disk utility repair disk (even though idk if i did it right) and i have been surfing the web for two days to find a solution.

I think since I updated my mac OS X lion 10.7.2 to 10.7.3. I cannot open YouTube no matter the browser I use it's always the same, so I checked my flash player version and I have the latest one so I don't think the flash player is the problem, I don't know what to do.

I'm not sure if this is a commonly known issue with Snow Leopard, but most of the time, everything works fairly well performance wise.
Other times -- while watching a video on youtube or any other site with embedded flash videos -- the video starts running REALLY choppy and will continue to do so until I completely close Safari and re-launch it.
Is this an indication of something wrong with my computer, or again, is this simply a problem with Snow Leopard that is known and will hopefully be corrected in the near future?

For some reason, when I go to listen to a band's music on MySpace, the player will load and play the music, but it won't show the song titles, and the little visualizer thing on the player all moves as one big blue block, rather than looking like a waveform. I downloaded the latest version of Flash, and I'm having this problem with both Firefox 3.5.5 and Safari 4.0.4.

Isn't Snow Leopard supposed to bring hardware acceleration better to the OS? I know adobe flash has never been good in OSX but it is worse in Snow Leopard! I use SMC Fan Control to keep my temps down but the temps rise so rapidly I have to go on 6000rpm to keep it below 70 degrees ? In Leopard it was fine on 3000rpm! This is standard definition we are talking about never mind HD!

I have read the 3 or 4 discussions on flashing the 4890. I just ordered one and plan on doing a clean install of snow leopard and installing the card at the end of the week. However, some of the links from rapid share don't appear to be working. Can some one point me to where these files have moved and are there an snow leopard specific files?
