OS X :: Unable To Get Snow Leopard Performance?
Sep 2, 2009
I installed Snow Leopard recently and have had some really annoying performance issues/ hang ups when running multiple applications.
I had no problems before and activity monitor isn't showing anything out of the ordinary.
2.4gz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2gb 667 mhz ddrs sdram
Late 2008 macbook
Like I said, I've never had any performance issues before this and now I'm getting frequent hang ups when multi-tasking. By hang ups I mean the little spinning wheel pops up and I can't do anything.

I getting my copy of SL next from Macmall next week. I am reading some reviews that thou SL is snappier than Leopard, but it seems the application performance is slow compared to Leopard .
I am using applications like MS office 2007, firefox 3.x and parallels with linux & windows. Anybody there who has already installed SL can tell us what do they think about application performance in SL.

People are talking about the increased ZFS support in Snow Leopard and how this is great news for SSD's but so far I have not been able to find any figures as to what kind of performance increase we are likely to see.
Does anybody have any idea yet? Maybe through using Solaris or something. Also heard that it will not be possible to boot of a ZFS under OS X, is this true? If so, is there really much point in including it in Snow Leopard?

Anyone noticed extremely choppy flash performance? I use Safari as my browser, and in Leopard YouTube videos (for example) were smooth and fine. Now in Snow Leopard flash is very choppy indeed.

I just noticed that playing YouTube Video in Safari or Google Chrome the CPU usage is not less than 70-75 % on both cores ( MacBook 2.4ghz unibody with SL 10A432 32bit kernel ).
On Firefox the CPU usage on the same YouTube video is no more than 40-45% on both cores.
Anyone else notice this ?
I guess it may happen because flash plugin is 32 bit and used in some sort of sandbox in Safari now because Safari is 64bit and flash plugin is 32 bit ( in Chrome everything run in sanbox and I got the same CPU usage on Leopard ).
Firefox is 32 bit application as Flash is and I'm guessing thats why it uses less CPU.

Not sure why, but when I run my SL in 64 bit it runs significantly slow when compared to 32-bit on my umbp late 2008 2.4 ghz, 4gb ram and 500gb hdd. when running on 32-bit, my umbp boots in less than 15 sec and loading the native apps are very snappy and responsive (safari/finder/preview, etc). But when I boot in 64-bit. It takes like 45 sec to boot (it keeps spinning the white circle during the boot up) and even loading safari and rendering the default page will take like couple of secs which is noticeably slow and opening pdf in preview is slow and scrolling the pdf is noticeably slow and sometimes hangs and which does not happen in 32-bit mode.
If I click on application folder on the doc, it opens the folder before I release the mouse button in 32-bit mode, but in 64-bit, it takes upto 5 sec to open the folder. I tried this couple of times including rebooting the umbp. It is not crashing in 64 bit, but it is noticeably slow. Which is making me depressed because I was thinking to upgrade this laptop to 6gb ram. Now I am not sure if i want to upgrade.

I have a fairly old imac (it's about three years old) and although I've upgraded the ram, it's feeling a bit sluggish now. Do you think I would experience any performance benefit from upgrading to snow leopard? It still seems like a great machine so can't really justify upgrading to the new imacs.

Since I've heard snow leopard incorporates 64-bit features, does this mean iLife '09 itself will encode movies faster, idvd encode faster etc.? I'm not familiar with 64-bit advantages.

Has anyone ran some tests with the new Snow Leopard Graphics Update Apple just released. I am primarily interested in the performance increases it offers SC2. I am at work and will not be able to install it until late tonight, after which I will post before and after FPS and settings for SC2.

I recently had to upgrade my OS to 10.6 (then to 10.6.8 via update). After the upgrade fro 10.5 though my computer had been running slow, especially safari. I haven't do anything different besides running the update. The only new program(s) I have is Diablo 3 which I know tkes up a lot of processing power, but that wouldn't explain the overall, extreme drop in speed when I'm not playing it.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Question: I already have snow leopard installed on my iMac. But can I still do a CLEAN snow leopard installation onto my imac even though snow leopard is already installed?
I tried it just now like twice but I got the spinning wheel of death. It wouldn't go pass the apple sign and spinning wheel.

I was wondering if anyone here has an Epson Artison 800 printer and has upgraded to Snow Leopard. I made the mistake of installing snow leopard last weekend, and have not been able to print since. I searched for new drivers and found a couple, but still have no luck.

When using spotlight I set my preferences so it doesn't find music and some other things. It works great for the spotlight popup, but in windowed mode, which searches "this mac", still searches for everything. Is there a way to get the windowed mode to only search the things I specified in spotlight?

I'm running 10.6.3 Snow Leopard on my 2008 MBP. At first it worked great, but with an occasional beach ball. But it's gotten worse. Now i can't do anything if i have more than 3 pages of safari open, it just beach balls or freezes. If i have iMovie open and am working on a project, it beach balls every time i try to navigate the project (with 480 X 320 H.264 video!) Plus everything else freezes so much and then just spazzes out when the computer comes to. I don't have much stuff on here, only about 20 or so apps plus the stock apps (most i dont use that much but keep because i occasionally use it), plus like 40GB/185GB available on the partition.

If I do not currently own a copy of bootcamp, how would I go about aqcuiring this piece of software? You see, I reently got my iMac back from an Apple Store, and after reinstalling the Operating system, and installing bootcamp, it simply wasn't there anymore, it appeared that the application simply got rid of itself, but it doesn't matter why I don't hve it, back to the point. Could I download it from an official site? Or would I have to go to the apple store and ask for a disk of it, or for them to install it. Or am I simply out of luck and would have to purchase an entirely new apple computer to acquire bootcamp?
Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), My lack of boot-camp is disturbing.

I'm trying to configure my new Mac Pro in 10.6.1 and I'm having trouble opening iDisk.
I know iDisk has always been slow and flaky in OSX but this is just getting ridiculous.
After entering the name/password it just closes the window and does nothing??? Thanks in advance.

I'm unable to update from 10.6.4 Snow Leopard to the 10.6.5 Security Update - either from built-in Software Update, the downloaded 10.6.5 Combo update, or the full 644MB OS X 10.6.5 Update. Using Disk Utility to Verify or Repair Disk Permissions I see the error - "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreS. As been modified and will not be repaired". Also my Mac Mini 2.0Ghz 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD is pretty much on 24/7 and I've rebooted several times after each attempt listed above and running Disk Utility before each reboot and before each attempt.
An aside to this, I'm unable to use the numeric keys above the keypad on my Apple Keyboard Pro [aluminum] for the past 20days. Yes I've checked System Preferences:
Keyboard: Restore Defaults, Full keyboard access = All Controls, Modifier keys = [only Apple Keyboard is selectable], and I've restored defaults, Expose Fkeys have been removed [tried and set back to no avail]. Lastly, I'm unable to use the powered USB ports on my Dell monitor which worked just a few days ago before my wife moved around the desk - doubtful she would've damaged anything [she knows I'm anal about the Mac - I work with PCs]. I'm unsure if all are related and I DO recall having to do the 10.6.4 Combo update from the original shipping Snow Leopard. Have I missed anything to test?

Insecure Startup Item disabled. "/Library/Startupitem/M-Audio Firmware Loader" has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings. I tried to install the program and it looks like it partially installed But I have no idea. I am pretty technologically illiterate.

I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 - tried today but says I don't have enough memory. How do I get more memory & what do I need to do it.

Isn't Snow Leopard supposed to bring hardware acceleration better to the OS? I know adobe flash has never been good in OSX but it is worse in Snow Leopard! I use SMC Fan Control to keep my temps down but the temps rise so rapidly I have to go on 6000rpm to keep it below 70 degrees ? In Leopard it was fine on 3000rpm! This is standard definition we are talking about never mind HD!

I have my wifi connection working just can't get mail. What to do next? I did run Main Menu and Repair Disk permissions. Mail is working on my MacPro and other IMac.

I have OS X.5.8; I bought OSX Snow Leopardabout two years ago, but never installed. I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard at long last (and maybe to Lion). But when I put the Snow Leopard disk in, I can hear my disk drive trying and trying, and then it just spits it out. I know disk drive works. & I bought the disk from an Apple store. Is the disk bad - or is it that my MacBook can't be upgraded to Snow Leopard?
