Software :: Converting To MAC - Finding Mac Equiv. Programs Similar To Sound Forge And Acid Pro
May 14, 2008
So I just bought my MacBook Pro last year, and divided it 1/2 Windows 1/2 Mac -- I finally decided that I can't deal with Windows anymore..the viruses, spyware, and poor performance in general -- Only thing is I have to say bye bye to the 2 digital audio programs I've been using to make CHEERLEADING music for the past 5 years - SOUND FORGE (to cut my songs) and ACID PRO (to mix them) -- I already contacted SONY, and they don't currently offer any audio programs for Mac..The woman actually got a bit feisty when I asked them to re-consider =)
Anyway, to match SOUND FORGE, I've been playing around with Wave Pad, Audacity, and Twisted Wave..they all kinda do the trick, but it just doesn't seem to be enough -- The most important things I liked about SOUND FORGE were: 1) use of markers 2) being able to zoom in & out of the sound file with the scroll wheel on my mouse 3) having the freedom to drag & drop -- I found that using the zoom tool within any project, made cutting music twice as long..and some programs just don't support my scroll wheel, nor the drag & drop concept.
To match ACID PRO, I've been playing around with Reason, & Ableton Live, but they almost seem TOO pro for me..I don't even understand half of what they do. The most important quality about ACID PRO was it's loop based technology -- I loved being able to find a cut (previously created with Sound Forge) within the project browser, and tell Acid to read it as a loop (and the # of beats, depending on its length) or as a one shot. This automatic time-stretching/tempo-matching concept, & straight-forwardness is what I loved most about ACID -- It's like music for dummies! Pick, Paint, & Play..not to mention, unlimited tracks & cross-fading is a plus+++

Just had my 3 yrs old Mac Mini decomission and set aside in the living hall as a media server recently. While I use the mini primary to watch movies, in which it does great with XBMC, I would like to have the ability to Remote Login (GUI) into the mini WHILE my wife is watching her fav movie CONCURRENTLY without any disturbance. I guess this a old topic i'm revisiting here. I've been googling around and searching this forum, but yet till now, the closest solution I've came to is having OSXvnc (Vine Server) running along with fast using switching, plus some VNC client etc. The worst part of this approach is, each remote user have to log into the physical machine for fast user switching. This is just soooo dodgy as compare to the windoze variant. I'm posting to see, if anyone have a better solution that:
1. each remote user dun have to physically login first
2. I can have concurrent session running (either remote, or local-wife watching movie)
Does the Mac OSX SL Server have something to offer to this problem? And also, I've discovered that The Apple Remote Desktop is more for a network administrator sort of app, totally not related to allowing multiple concurent remote GUI Sessions.

It was working just fine lastnight before I turned my laptop off, but when I turned it on earlier, I wasn't getting sound from my programs. I get the boot up sound, and when I press the volume down or volume up buttons on my keyboard, I get the sounds. I went through all my programs to check if the audio was working correctly on any of them and the only ones that are working are Google Chrome and Quicktime player. VLC, iTunes, etc, aren't working, and I don't know why.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for software that will convert my mp4 and mkv files?
I've tried Handbrake but I never get any of the settings right, and it seems as if Handbrake won't take a m2ts file and convert it to mp4 or m4v without problems.
Is there a easier/better app that will do this?

I have recently found some floppy disks with artwork files on that I created many years ago on an Amiga computer. Thing is most of these files have the .IFF extension.
Does anybody know an a program or a way to either view these files or covert them to .JPEG so that I can see them on my Mac ?

My Mac is noticeably slower so I'm looking to clean it up before I try a clean install on the hard drive. I found a Kodak printer program and an HP printer program both of which I deleted from applications, but both of which are chewing up 500MB of process memory, and when I force a quit they just pop open again a second later.Question:
Where are these programs hididng? How do I kill them?
Any other tricks to speed my Mac up (I verified permissions already).

I just purchased (ships the 11th) a new iMac i7. I have been using Dells for years to game with and Macs to work with, and have decided I am not tolerating PC nonsense anymore and moving to my Mac full-time (yay for Bootcamp).
I have some old Dell 5.1 speakers that I am retiring, but I am a bit flummoxed on a good set of 5.1 speakers that will work with my Mac. (I do not want to use the Firewave or an external sound card
The Logitech Z-5500 look like they will do the trick with a Toslink To Optical Mini Adapter.
However, that is pricey for speakers. Do any of you know of some decent 5.1 Surround Sound speakers for the single mini port on the Mac?

I have a question about using my new samsung tv as a monitor for my macbook. I have all the cables and such and my TV reads the computer. It actually shows the desktop background, mouse, and the toolbar on the tv...
BUT....when i try and open a program such as safari or itunes it does not display the program on the monitor but rather on my macbook screen. It shows the program open on the tv monitor but it shoots off the screen and then opens on the macbook screen.
Also the mouse disappears from the tv monitor screen on the left side only, and when it does it becomes visible back on the macbook screen! Any tips or suggestions on how to get the programs to show up on the monitor instead of the macbook screen?

I just purchased a 2.4 MacBook along with IWork. I am using this for school, not video editing or special effect stuff. I have always been a PC user until today. I was wondering if iwork is almost the same at ms office? I am used to using MS Word. Is the word processing on the iworks almost the same as the MS Word? For example, can I write am essay with IWorks with all the editing I need like the MS Word? I know I purchased the IWorks but I have not open it yet. I want to know you guys feedback before I open it. I don't know whether to get MS Office 08 for Mac instead?

I've done everything I can think about to fix Handbrake, and not having any luck. Is there another program that will work the same way that Handbrake does that works well on macs? Handbrake keeps shutting off about 30% of the way in. No matter what movie it is, it shuts off.

what I would like (as this is now for work also) is the 24" ACD hooked up to the MBP and another screen hooked up to my PC next to it, however, I'd prefer to have 2 identical screens. As there doesn't seem to be a way of connecting the 24" ACD to a normal PC yet, a monitor that looks like the ACD and preferrably the same height and glossy too.

OpenOffice vs. NeoOffice
I've reached the point where I think it's time to finally wean myself from Classic applications (and data file formats) that I currently use on my old PowerMac g4 (still running 10.3.9).
I have both a white intel iMac and a new MacBook Pro which (of course) don't run Classic (at least not without a lot of haggling with Sheepshaver, etc.), and the g4 is 6+ years old and can't last forever.
I'm looking at iWork but it looks like a mess compared to AppleWorks, which I've used for years (I also still use an OLD copy of Microsoft Works running under Classic to maintain some databases that go as far back as 1987!). And iWork doesn't even contain a database module (granted, Filemaker Pro exists for that -- but for my usage, it's overkill).
I've downloaded and am experimenting with both OpenOffice and NeoOffice. They look very similar.
