Oct 3, 2009My 24" iMac (2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, running OSX 10.6.1) crashed during a normal shutdown sequence and had to be closed down by holding in the power button. This resulted in three zero kB alias files with random names such as "." in the trash.
I cannot empty these files from the trash by any normal means and the trash icon permanently shows full. The files can be selected but cannot be dragged to the desktop or renamed. Other files put in the trash can be deleted normally.

May 1, 2012Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X? Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least.Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that.

Jul 13, 2010When I click and drag a file or folder to the trash icon, the file is deleted, however, the icon does not display any trash and when right clicking, the "Empty Trash" option is grayed out.
The trash folder does exists and all deleted files appear when the following command is entered into Terminal.

Sep 7, 2009I have a flash drive that I use a good bit, but recently it's started doing this thing where it won't eject. Even force ejects hang and I literally have to restart the computer to get the message to go away.
It also has issues deleting files. Perfect example, I just plugged it in, dragged one file to the trash, didn't do anything else, and when I try to empty the trash it says that file is in use when it definitely is not. Then, giving up on that I try to eject the drive and it won't.
I'd say it won't eject about 3/4 of the time. Other drives are fine, so it's not something I'm doing, and it does it on every computer I try, so it's not just my computer in particular.Any ideas what might be causing this?
OS X :: DVD Icon Stays On Desktop And Finder After Eject?
Nov 23, 2008Whenever I put a DVD+RW in and eject it, the icon stays on the desktop and in the finder. I have to manually delete it. Why is it doing this? I tried repairing permissions and repairing disk, but it didn't help. It happens both on my new Aluminum macbook and my older whitebook.

May 4, 2012I want to eject my camera from my macbook pro but I can't find an icon on my dock, or in the computor section of my finder. I therefore don't know how to eject it since i can't drag it into the trash or select eject from the list of options since there is no icon that i can find of my camera on there! Does anyone know how i can safely eject it? I also keep on putting memory cards into my macbook pro and then taking them out without ejecting them - is that a bad idea? If so then I don't know how to eject them either since i can't find them on my computor either!
My ipod doesn't come up as an icon on my dock either, it just comes up in itunes - is there some way of causing icons to pop up on the dock?

OS X Mavericks :: While Attempting To Eject External Hard Drive - Data Ends Up In Trash
Aug 28, 2014Rather than empty the trash which now contains all the data on my external drive I ejected the external drive immediately. When I ejected the WD external hard drive the trash bin no longer displayed any trash inside of it, and when I re-connected the external drive the "trash" (contents of my external drive) appears again in the trash. Is there a way to break the connection which has formed between my data on the external drive, and my trash bin? I was simply trying to eject my external drive as I've done hundreds of times by dragging the icon to the trash/eject area. I don't want to risk losing the data. I restored my computer, and upgraded to Mavericks.

Jun 5, 2012It's been sometime since I last synced my iPhone with iTunes, relying on WiFi backup instead. The problem I have, is that everytime I sync my iPhone with iTunes, iTunes re-orders my apps and installs apps that I've previously downloaded but have since deleted/uninstalled.Â
When I open iTunes and preview 'Lewis' iPhone 4' under the Apps tab when viewing my device I can see the representation of an organised iPhone homescreen that is nothing like my own (maybe how it used to be many months ago though). I know that if I hit sync, that is what I'll see not what I had!Â
What's interesting is that if I uncheck 'Sync Apps', what is shown (although faded) is how my iphone is actually organised. When checking 'Sync Apps', all changes to show me a chaotic and fundamentally different arrangement.Â
It seems to me that my sync is out of sync!

Mar 2, 2006I am a pretty experienced Mac user but have never ran into this problem. My iDisk icon in the sidebar of the Finder window doesn't have an eject button. Any disk or other removable drive gives me the eject button but not the iDisk. I am running on the latest version of Tiger (10.4.5) and a 12" 1.25GHz iBook G4 with 1.25GB Ram. I know those stats really don't make a difference, except for maybe the OS, but just in case anyone was wondering.

The Trash Icon does not change when the trash icon is full or empty, appears to be full at all times even after a secure trash empty. Apr 24, 2009Still a new mac user and have been playing around getting to know os x. The other day I was modifying my dock settings and have got it to a place which I'm happy with, apart from one problem. I was experimenting with different trash icons but decided to stick with the original so changed them back. Now, every time I shutdown and reboot, the trash icon is showing up as one of the trash icons I was experimenting, regardless of whether or not there is anything in the trash. If the trash has something in it, the wrong icon will be displayed before automatically switching to the correct one. However, if the trash is empty on startup, I have to put something in it, then empty the trash before the correct icon shows up. I have checked that I have deleted all the icons I was experimenting with but it seems like it the unwanted icon has been saved somewhere in memory and is the default trash icon on startup? Any ideas on what's going on or how to fix the problem?

Jun 17, 2014I'm running MacOS 10.9.3 on a late 2013 MacBook Pro.On a few instances I've spotted that the icon on the dock is not changing to show that there are contents waiting to be zapped. On clicking on the icon the finder window does show the files, but the state change doesn't happen.Â
