OS X V10.7 Lion :: Trash Icon Disappeared On Desktop?
Apr 25, 2012
And when I went to find the Lib plist file to delete it, I had no Library Folder in my user folder. This was repaired with Disk Utility. Aren't I supposed to have a Lib Folder in my User Fole
Info:
MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
Running a fairly new iMac with 10.7.4 and came home to find that the finder flashes, I can't access the trash and the files on the desktop disappeared. Haven't downloaded anything (and my kids also claim not to have).

I have a mytouch 4g cell phone with adapter cable, that use to be working just fine with my macbook pro. The cell phone icon would show up on my screen, and I could transfer pictures from there.  Out of the blue, the icon for my phone is no longer showing up on the screen , therefore, I can no longer access pictures and tranfer them to my computer anymore.Â
Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X? Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least. Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that.

Today, with no major changes at all (or downloads), The screen on my MBP no longer shows the files, folders, and aliases I had set up. Only the Hardrive and Idisk Icons. Everything else is GONE? I rebooted, I relaunched, reviewed preferences. Nothing. I also repaired permissions and rebooted.
If I use Finder and drill to the desktop, I definitely SEE all the files aliases, etc. But the don't show up on my screen?
Last night all my desktop icons just disappeared all of a sudden, I restarted my laptop and they came back but when I try to click and drag anything on my desktop or copy something between finder windows, they just disappear again and Finder crashes. I downloaded the newest update and installed it, which didn't fix the problem so I found a similar problem on another forum and tried doing what they recommended (which was to delete the Cache folder and some files from the library and restart the computer) After I restarted, finder started crashing every 2-3 seconds and giving me a message saying that Finder quit unexpectadly while trying to restore it's windows.Â
I have a late 2008 unibody MacBook, 4GB RAM, 1TB HD, 2GHz dual core processor.
My 24" iMac (2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, running OSX 10.6.1) crashed during a normal shutdown sequence and had to be closed down by holding in the power button. This resulted in three zero kB alias files with random names such as "." in the trash.
I cannot empty these files from the trash by any normal means and the trash icon permanently shows full. The files can be selected but cannot be dragged to the desktop or renamed. Other files put in the trash can be deleted normally.
They're still accessible through finder, but now I can't drag-and-drop anything (at all) to the desktop. It was fine a minute ago before I shut down and rebooted my laptop. Restarts and switching users does nothing. I'm using Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4.
Anyone come across a problem where all the desktop icons disappear? I also cannot right click on my desktop to bring up a contextual menu, my machine appears to be running faultlessly apart from that. I have run Onyx to reset permissions and have checked the disk but cannot seem to find anything wrong.
i was wondering if anyone can tell me why the mac HD icon that i have on my desktop wont show up in my finder>desktop page. other apps that i have on the desktop show up on the desktop page but the mac HD icon is not there.
I have several Alias Icons on my desktop which are unable to be removed. I have tried changing the rw permission and reselecting the original appliaction etc. But still unable to delete these alias icons. can someone point me in the right dircetion to use Terminal command such as rm -f file name to permanetely remove these left over icons. Before OS X Lion 10.7 I was able to chmod etc and delete the icon.
i have already under firefox preference/advanced checked and ok the Firefox being the default browser many times. My objective is to make sure that whenever i restart or boot up the Mac, the Firefox icon would appear automatically on the desktop side bar to enable one to simple click on it to launch the Mozilla browser. Right now every time i restart the Mac i don't see the firefox icon on the side bar and has therefore to go into the HD to find the download and start the application firefox again.
this seems like a really simple thing i want to do but i cant seem to figure it out. All i'm trying to do is put a shortcut of the trash can onto the desktop. I have my dock hidden and it can be a pain to try and make it appear to delete something. i searched spotlight for trash and there are no hits. i try to drag the trashcan from the dock and nothing happens. There has to be a solution???
I have a bunch of flash drives I need to format for work, and we want to put our company logo as the icon for each drive. We wanted to format them as MS-Dos Fat so that they'll be readable and writeable on both Mac and Windows computers. But when I format them that way and change the icon, it displays as a generic preview JPEG image instead of the real image or even the default hard drive icon.  I managed to fix it so the icon will display properly in Snow Leopard, but in Lion the drive still mounts with the generic Preview thumbnail.Â
Is there any way I can easily format a flash drive so that a) it will be readable and writeable on Windows and OSX machines and b) have the icon for the drive appear correctly on Lion, Snow Leopard, and windows machines?Â
When I click and drag a file or folder to the trash icon, the file is deleted, however, the icon does not display any trash and when right clicking, the "Empty Trash" option is grayed out.
The trash folder does exists and all deleted files appear when the following command is entered into Terminal.
I came back from a holiday and when I turned on my computer, my main HDD icon (same hdd that the system boots from) is no longer on my desktop nor in finder. I have to manually dig for it to be able to go through the files etc. Anyone knows why is that?
Also, the icon looks grayed a bit compared to others.
see picture for more details
Edit: the hdd in question is named Cindy just to clarify that
Let me preface that I'm new to the whole mac thing.
So I was trying to customize my dock and I downloaded CandyBar. After choosing a new Finder icon it asked me to log out to apply changes, when I logged back in my finder icon was gone. I went to CandyBar and clicked restore but it told me I never made any backup. I scrolled to where the original window to change the icon was (next to trash can etc) and the window to change it had also disappeared. Any advice on how to restore my Finder icon manually?
I've just downloaded Safari 5.1.5 and want to create this icon on my desktop, however, I don't want it as a 'short-cut' icon but as the same icon I see on the docking station.I was previously able to do this with Safari 5.0.3.
So I changed my menu bar to black and replaced the menu bar icons but now for some reason my airport menu bar icon does not show up anymore. I'm not sure if the aiport.menu was fully copied for it to work since when I tried copying the icons, all of them copied except the airport.menu because I got a message saying "Cannot copy because it is in use". So I deleted the file and copied the new one. So then I check on System Preferences > Network and check where it says "show airport status in menu bar" but it doesn't let me click on apply, it's greyed out. So when i exit System Preferences and go back, it's unchecked again.
Leopard had been working fine for me until this morning. Last night, when shutting down, I did software update and installed some update concerning Password Keychains. A few hours earlier, I installed some Software for my Harmony Remote and it said something like I did not have Administrative Access to the Apps folder.
Now, Spotlight has disappeared from my Desktop - see attachment.
I have tried all of the suggestions here: (Can't paste the link because now my Copy Paste isn't working). (OSX Daily Spotlight help page)
What's going on here?? No spotlight, no copy paste? (I have restarted, but it didnt change anything)
Edit: I also can't drag items from my desktop to my trashcan. I beginning to think these issues are about to snowball...
I tried to open my mac app store a few days ago but a question mark showed up on top of the icon, than the icon just disappeared and now I can't find it anywhere. How do I get it back?
