OS X :: Files Disappear When Using "Get Info" - Permissions Can't Be Changed?

Jun 9, 2010

I have several files in my trash that cannot be permanently deleted due to permissions errors, but when I click 'Get Info', the file disappears, only to reappear when I close and reopen the trash. It's very frustrating! My main goal is to just get these files off my external drive and be done with them! Super Empty Trash does nothing.

OS X :: Changed Home Name, Files Disappear - How To Change Back

Apr 8, 2010

Last night I changed my home's name from "totoduong" to "Home" and it made seem like I lost everything.Currently "totoduong" has nothing, and "Home" has everything but in a folder.I checked another thread back in 2006, that said to change the name back to what it was. I am not clear how to do that in order to fix it.

OS X :: Changed HD Permissions - No Access

Aug 26, 2010

I have 5 partitions on 3 harddisks. While installing Snow Leopard on one of them I Lost access to ALL of them. By using the Installer DVD I managed to fix the Snow Leopard one but the rest are locked. I can't change permissions even as an admin, tried Terminal, nothing works, I'm getting desperate (and tired-It's 2:20 in Sweden now). The symbol of the HD in the info shows a HD with a padlock on it! Is there a Terminal command to unlock it? I have never used Terminal until this happend. If I don't reply at once I'm probably in bed but I hope somebody has helped me when I wake up.

OS X :: Changed Permissions For Entire HDD

Sep 20, 2010

I right clicked on my Macintosh HD icon, chose get info, then changed permission to read & write, and applied it to all enclosed items. Then I restarted my MacBook and it wouldn't boot. It would just hang on the Apple logo boot screen with the spinning thing. So I did some research online and saw that I would have to wipe my whole hard drive and start over since I applied read & write to all enclosed items. I put the OSX disk in, and booted to it. Before I went to install a fresh copy of OSX, I tried to repair disk permissions instead. To my delight, it worked. I was able to boot like normal. But now I am having some strange problems.

-When I load Firefox, the bouncing icon will be all jumpy.
-When I log into Skype, the log in sound will only play halfway.
-The most weird and major problem is the no setting will save at all. If I add a new bookmark in either Safari or Firefox, then quit and reopen the program, it will not be there. If I change my home page, the setting won't save after I quit out. If I remove something from my OSX dock, then log out then log back in, it will be back.

IMac :: Not Booting - Probably Due To Changed Permissions In Macintosh HD

Dec 19, 2010

I am guessing that is because I did something stupid.. i changed the "Sharing & Permissions" section in my Macintosh HD Get info window. To be more specific, I changed the Everyone's permission to "no access". I tried booting with the Mac OS install disc and doing the HD recovery from the Disc Utility but it didn't changed anything. In fact there is an error every time I am trying to do "Repair Disc Permissions", while the action "Repair Disc" is completed with no problems.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Admin Permissions Have Changed

Apr 15, 2012

When I upgraded to Snow Leopard, somehow my permissions have become affected and now when I log in as administrator, I am blocked from accessing folders that the administrator should be able to access. I think that my Administrator account details got deleted or changed to 'unknown' during the upgrade when I had to wipe my whole computer to load the new software. I now get the message: 'The folder “CrashReporter” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.' I can then go into 'Get Info' to change the permissions by adding my admin account (which is not there for some reason) and specifying 'read and write' and then it works fine. However, I have to do this individually for each and every folder and subfolder to make the files work properly.  Is there a way of having the computer change all the access permissions to accept my admin name and password again? (So I don't have to change the permissions one at a time on each folder?)

OS X :: Snow Leopard - Cannot Do Multiple Get Info Permissions At Once?

Nov 7, 2009

OK in Leopard I could always select a bunch of files, right click and get info, then change the permissions to Read and Write for Everyone and Leopard would apply it to all files selected. Now, when I try the same thing in Snow Leopard it actually opens the get info window for every individual file selected and I have to manually apply it to each one. Does anyone know how to go back to the old way?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Sharing And Permissions In Finder - No Privileges Info

Jun 14, 2012

I am using a Mac Mini (mid-2011) running Lion Server 10.7.4.I have noticed lately that when I check files the Sharing & Permissions portion using Get Info on my files I find that there are two lines for each user on my computer. The first set of lines says Read & Write which I actually selected. The second set of lines says Custom. When I check I have the list Read & Write, Read, Custom. When I try to change Custom I cam select new option No Privileges Info. For the other users I am able to delete the extra line once I select No Privileges Info.

However even though I have more than one line I cannot delete the extra line for the main user. I will try and delete the extra line for the main user logged in as someone else that has what I have defined as admin privileges (reason I have more than one user). This really concerns me because this issue is causing problems with me adding or removing files as needed in the terminal. When I try I get this funky error:
"Dubious permissions on file (skipping): filename with duplicate entries for a user."
This is happening more and more even though I am not changing the file permissions that I am aware of.

Hardware :: Changed Network Set Up - Lost All Permissions On Time Capsule

Nov 30, 2008

I finally got around to changing the way my wirless devices are set-up; instead of using time capsule as my wireless device, I went back to using the linksys wi-fi router (which I'd used prior to time capsule, but now set up as WPA2 if it makes a diff?) with the intent of putting time capsule in another room with my 1TB iTunes library hanging off it. All seemed to work well but I initially had a problem with the TV keep dropping the wi-fi connection. Now connected via ethernet to the linksys, no problem. iTunes streamed okay but I couldn't seem to get time machine to make a back-up - just prepared forever (overnight, still no joy).

So I noticed today that I seemed to have lost permissions on both iTime drive and time capsule. I managed to fix the iTunes drive by connecting direct to my macbook and running disk utility then adding myself again via sharing (hip hip for MRoogle), but I cannot do the same with the time capsule. Even with airport utility and connected via ethernet I can't even get the configuration up - just spins out until it throws an error. Anyone have any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong - I'm assuming it's me as this all worked in the previous set-up...

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Changed Permissions On Startup Disk - Now MBA Hangs Up On Boot

Apr 17, 2012

I have a new MacBook Air running Lion. Every time I use my backup software, it changes the permissions on my external drives, and I have to change them from read only to read & write, so I've gotten in that habit. At one point, I noticed that the permissions on my internal *startup disc* were read only, so I (foolishly, I now know) changed the permissions on the startup disc to read & write, with apply to all enclosed items checked. As I continued working, I got messages that a number of extensions could not be used and will be disabled (or something like that). I decided to reboot, so the computer could reset and hopefully correct things.

When I tried to boot, it hung up on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning clock/gear. I let it spin for a while, then forced power down and tried to boot in safe mode. The progress bar appeared as it's supposed to, but when the progress bar finished, it went back to the grey screen and hung up again. I let it spin for over 40 minutes before powering down, just in case it was doing diagnostics or something.I don't have access to the original OS DVD (nor do I have an optical drive to put it in). Any way for getting the computer to boot, at least in safe mode?

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Changed Contents Of Receipts Folder Now Permissions Won't Repair

May 29, 2012

I restored from backup OS X 10.5.8 Leopard using Time Machine to a brand new drive. After manually migrating some data to the newly restored boot drive I accidentally replaced the /Library/receipts folder with an out dated receipts folder. The problem is there is no way to get the proper receipts folder back so I'm stuck with a receipts folder filled with permissions that are not in sync with the list. I'm assuming this blunder is causing the error: The underlying task reported failure on exit, every time I try to repair permissions. I need this boot drive to be stable and want to avoid installing from DVD the OS from scratch. The drive checks out ok with every test accept repair permissions. The system is running VERY stable now on this brand new WD Caviar Black 1 TB drive. Do you think it's safe to clone this drive even though repair permissions won't work anymore?

OS X :: Macintosh HD Permissions Changed To "no Access"

May 18, 2009

White MacBook running Leopard gets stuck at grey start up screen with spinning wheel after the Sharing & Permissions for everyone on the "Macintosh HD" was changed to "no access". I booted off of system disk and ran Verify Permissions and that gave me the message " Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions on "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit" Archive and Install failed as well. Tried booting off of Disk Warrior CD but MacBook kept restarting while holding down the C-key.

Luckily I did a back-up last week using Time Machine. But I would still like to refrain from a clean install if I can help it. There were a few new files and installs that occurred after the last back-up. Albeit not a major problem. So now I'm trying to change Permissions for the HD using Terminal. Current settings listed below.

total 12
d-wx-wx-wt@ 2 root admin 1024 May 18 06:50 .Trashes
--w--w--w- 1 root admin 4096 May 18 06:50 ._.Trashes
drwxrwx---@ 47 root admin 1666 May 18 06:57 Macintosh HD
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin May 18 06:32 Mac OS X Install DVD

But when I use the "chmod 755 Macintosh HD/" command in the Volumes Directory I get "chmod: Macintosh HD/: No such file or directory. Are their 3 spaces in that command? Or am I missing something else?

OS X :: Excel Files Disappear From Dock?

Aug 26, 2009

I have five different excel files on the dock (they appear below the line, along with the trash icon). When I click on them a question mark appears on top of the excel symbol, and "help" says this means they have been deleted. None of them were saved anywhere but on the dock. But I have not opened three of them for weeks, and cannot find any of them with "finder". I always save when prompted before closing the Excel application, and would never knowingly delete them, as they represent hundreds of hours of work.

OS X :: Deleted Files Won't Disappear From IPod / IPhone - Easier Way To Do?

Jul 12, 2010

I deleted a bunch of MP3 files from my hard disc, but they will not disappear from my iPhone and iPod, even after synchronizing. I think I know why: I deleted the MP3s from my hard disc but not from my iTunes Library. I don't want all the hassle of figuring out which songs I deleted and deleting them from my iTunes Library, I just want them to disappear from the iPhone/iPod and free up the space.

I am thinking of deleting ALL the songs on my iPhone/iPod and then syncing it again. Is there an easier way?

Applications :: Editing The Info Of Mp3 Files On A Mac?

Feb 4, 2009

Ok, so I have been a life long pc user who recently bought one of the new unibody mbps. On my old pc I had a large collection of .mp3 files that i moved over to my mac. My problem is that on the pc I could easily edit all of the information by right clicking and going to properties. On my mbp I right click on the file go to get info but it wont let me edit any of the stuff in the "more info" section, like the year recorded, comments, album, or title. Is there anyway to do this? I am really ocd about how my music is organized and like it all to be the same. (seeing unorganized ipods drives me crazy) I know you can do this in itunes but i want to do it on the actual files so it is changed permanently.

It's at the point where I can repair permissions once, generating a log of repaired files, and then if I repair permissions again immediately afterwards (whether I've closed and reopened Disk Utility in the mean time or not), the same exact list of files appears as being repaired.

So in iMovie, I can watch my videos but not edit them, since I have read-only permissions. I could easily go into finders "get info" menu and change permissions, but I have hundreds upon hundreds of imovie projects. So, how can I change the permissions of hundreds of files at a time? OS X :: Don't Have Permissions To View Files - Corrupted?

Jul 22, 2010

I performed an erase and install of Snow Leopard and then used Migration assistant to transfer all my data back to my computer. After that I noticed that on my 2 other internal hard drives, most of my folders had a red minus sign over them and when I clicked the folder it said "The Folder can't be opened because you don't have permissions to see its content". I clicked get info and under sharing and permissions there was a name that said "unknown". was this the newly created account which I had deleted? Afterwards I added my account and applied it to all my files and folders. I can now access all my files and folders. But now my question is weather or not my files became corrupt or was it just a permissions issue? Also What caused the permissions issue in the first place?

MacBook Pro :: Change Permissions On Many Files At Once?

Jun 6, 2012

I recently had a large hard drive crash, and, long story short, I got all my data back but now have a different user account on a new hard drive.  The permissions on all the files on the computer are fine.

However, I am a recently graduated film student and use an external drive to edit video.  When I tried to open up Final Cut Pro and work on a project, I was told that the program couldn't work because I didn't have "write" access to my scratch drives.  I changed the permissions on the relevant folders and can now open the application fine, but can't actually edit because ALL the medi files don't give me full read/write access.

I can change them all one at a time, which requires I enter my password for each one, but this would take a few days of work to complete.  My question is: how can I add my user account with read/write permission to many files at once?  I've heard this can be done with Terminal, but I'm not sure how.
