I want to know If I can delete items in my downloads folder. I HAVE DONE NOTHING specific to these files. The majority of them are files I opened as email attachments. NO, I haven't moved them or saved them. NO I haven't imported them to itunes. NO they aren't files ending in .dmg. Almost ALL are pdf. On another post regarding this question the chosen answer was, "you can delete from downloads folder without affecting the applications, so you CAN'T delete them without any problems". This statement is contradicting
Should it not have been worded, "YES you CAN delete without any problems"? And it didn't indicate if it included pdf files. ( i believe they were discussing copies of apps or programs in the downloads folder).
I just want to know what will happen to these pdf files. Do I need to move 229 files IF i want to preserve them somewhere on my Mac, or are they already saved elsewhere as a pdf?

On my MacBook, when I delete a file in the Downloads folder, it says that it will go immediately and for some reason it doesn't go to Trash. On my iMac, the behaviour is as I expect, it goes to Trash and I can undo it. Is there a way to change it on the MacBook so it goes to Trash? I'm using 10.6.3.

After downloading a photo, I'm only able to drag it from the Downloads folder and drop it to my Desktop or another location about half the time. Often, I must open Downloads in the Finder to drag and drop. The Finder option always works. Is there a preference setting I need to change so that dragging and dropping from Downloads is always available?

I accidentally removed the "Downloads" folder icon from my OS10 dock, and when I restored it there, it had changed to an icon of a PDF notebook. When opened, the stack shows only PDFs. What happened? How do I restore it to a regular Downloads folder in the dock?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was downloading my senior pictures from the photographers website when suddenly I don't know what I did but the downloads folder disappeared from my dock! I got it back (I think...there is this little blue folder that says "downloads") But now when I download an image it won't go into that little folder on the dock. The little box pops up like it used to to show the progress of the download but it doesn't show the tiny loading bar in the little folder in the dock and when it is finished downloading it does not appear in the folder in the dock!
View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently when trying to download/open a file from the internet - my machine prompted me as usual with the grey box that says: You have chosen to open, then says What should Firefox do with this file? Option: 1) open with (then select the program - i.e. word, internet ,etc) or to 2) save file or 3) do this automatically for files like this from now on. I need to figure out how to un-select the 3rd option.

I have five different excel files on the dock (they appear below the line, along with the trash icon). When I click on them a question mark appears on top of the excel symbol, and "help" says this means they have been deleted. None of them were saved anywhere but on the dock. But I have not opened three of them for weeks, and cannot find any of them with "finder". I always save when prompted before closing the Excel application, and would never knowingly delete them, as they represent hundreds of hours of work.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just bought an external HD for my Mac Mini as my media plus downloads were filling up my internal HD. Is the location of the Downloads Folder (and Movies) something that can be configured somewhere? I still want it to show up in my home folder. Is it as easy as deleting the old one and creating an alias for a Downloads folder located on my external HD?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs it safe to clear my downloads folder? Basically, it has become very large (~20gb). I want to create some more space because my hard drive is partitioned. Basically, what I'm wondering is, if, for example someone sends me a song. I play the song through itunes. Doesn't the song then get copied into an iTunes folder? Assuming it does, does that mean there is a duplicate file in the downloads folder as in the iTunes folder? Otherwise, do I have to manually go through my downloads folder and decide whats needed and whats not?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been using Macs for years, but I haven't got into particulars. Anyways, I wanted to know if I delete the contents of the Downloads folder, will it adversely affect the files that are actually stored in there. Meaning, will it delete them from other areas of my computer. I have random powerpoints, pictures, word documents, music, etc. in the downloads folder. It's reaching almost a 1000 files! I noticed that the music is in my iTunes music folder and some of the documents are stored in the documents folder.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI accidentally took my downloads folder off of my dock, and I figured out how to put it back on and use the settings I want. However, for some reason now .mp4 files won't appear in the stack or in the actual folder in Finder. They appear in the Safari downloads box, but not in the stack or folder. It's kind of frustrating, because it makes it difficult for it to find what I need.

when displaying with the Finder (MacOS X 10.9.3) the "Downloads Folder" content in list mode, It didn't display the small triangle in front of the folder which are present. In order to display the content of such a folder, I must double-click on the folder instead of clicking on the triangle as previous. way to get back to the right Finder display.
