OS X :: Enter Key Not Working?
Dec 16, 2009
All of a sudden my "Enter" key next to my space bar (Macbook Pro Santa Rosa) stopped working in OS X. However it still works in boot camp. This is annoying to me because I primarily use that key instead of the main return key. OS X doesn't seem to recognize me pushing this key at all. Even if I go to keyboard shortcuts and try to change any random thing to the enter key, nothing happens when I press that enter.

my enter button won't work as I'm trying to login. I don't have a password so normally I'd just press the enter button and login right away. But yesterday, I tried pressing enter and nothing happens. I'm certain that the enter key isn't malfunctioning because it's a brand new computer.

I'm just wondering is there a way to set up your Mac so that pressing the enter key will open files because this is what I am used to doing on a PC. It gets kind of annoying because every time I open a file I end up renaming it accidently. Is there a way to open files with the enter key or is it just something that I'll have to live with?

I trying to figure out why my macbook pro running tiger has started logging me out immediately after I log in, and what I can do to fix this.I am correctly entering the password (just in case you thought I didn't know the password) as it accepts it and logs in, starts to change the desktop background and then just as the Finder bar appears I am logged out and send straight back to the main login box. It does this for the main User (admin) account. I have tried booting in safe mode and this does the same thing. The Guest login does work however.

If I log off, put the computer to sleep, or restart, I have to access network preferences and enter the password before the internet will work. Yes I'm checking the box that says "remember password in keychain". What gives?

I run a new Mac Mini with up to date software. My timemachine backs up to an external HD plugged into a USB port on the mini. It backs up regularly and without any problems.
Yesterday I tried to enter time machine to restore some files I have lost. Whenever I select "enter time machine" nothing happens. The disk doesn't mount, the time machine icon doesn't spin, nothing happens.

I'm using Time Machine to backup my computer, and the backup is going fine. But when I try to enter Time Machine to go back and look for a file from a few months ago, the program will not open at all. I click on the icon and nothing happens. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I cannot enter Time Machine at all? P.S. This i a Macbook Pro mid-2010 with OS X Lion 10.7.3.

I cannot enter Time Machine—The backups are being created and I can manually navigate through the backup, but it simply will not load. I am running the 10.7.4 on a 2010 27" iMac.
I've tried everything that Pondini recommends including deleting finder.plist, disconnecting second monitor, resetting Time Machine from scratch, entering with Mail.app or Address Book as the foreground app, deselecting Time Machine drive, using a directly-connected USB drive instead of a network share, and starting Time Machine from another user account. I do not have a virus scanner or a Finder replacement.
Notes:I have symlinked a few folders in my home directory to another drive: Pictures being the important one. I've tried using a straight folder in each case.I do have a lot of apps running, notably: Viscosity, Alfred, Growl, Dropbox, Sparkleshare (though that is a recent addition)Perhaps the most important note: I replaced my iMac's optical drive with an SSD, which I am using as my system drive. The original 1TB drive is mounted elsewhere. I installed a fresh copy of Lion onto it.

Every 10 minutes I get a pop up window that reads, "To synchronize your keychain on this computer, enter the password for your user account on..." then it says the name of my macbook pro. My problem is that I type in the password but another window comes up rejecting it, claiming my password is incorrect....which isn't true.

There are few things I miss from Windows, but one thing is the way you open files. Is there a way, in Tiger, to be able to open files by just hitting return/enter, instead of [Command]+[Down]?

Yesterday I bought a MacBook white and I am really happy with it.
Anyway, I have a keyboard basic question:
My native language is Spanish and I use the Spanish ISO layout in my computer keyboards; anyway, my new macbook has an English keyboard and, though I changed the keyboard layout to be used as a Spanish one, I did not find a way to enter the backslash. The other characters [including and accented vowels are working properly].
Do you know what key combination must I press to enter the backslash?

I can't seem to find any good info on what kind of Mac software is out there to create calendars. What I'm specifically looking for is the ability to enter events that fit inside the entire square. Something like this:
Leadership Conference
11:00am - 2:00pm
Hyatt Hotel
Chicago, IL
Basically, each of those lines would be centered within the date box. The programs I've tried always do something like this: "Leadership Conf...." and then that's it. I've been creating these damn calendars by hand in Excel and am looking for a good software package that can make my life easier. Have seen spotty reviews of Print Shop and other big programs.

Just did "Archive & Install" and when I am trying to move my OLD documents to the new locations, I get a Password dialog box, and it will only move/copy/trash them once I enter my password. I have tried resetting "Everyone: No Access" and "<myusername>:read&write" from CMD+I for all relevant files and folders, but it still does this. This is pertinent to stuff such as ~/Documents ~/Pictures etc, (NOT ~/Library by the way).

I use a program called Coconut battery to monitor the life of the battery. Well on my new MB I noticed that it says the Age of your Mac is 122 months. I have tried to manually enter the serial number but it still says it is 122 months old, thats seven years, in 2004 they were still making the G4's.

I have a Mac AIR Book with a French keypad (laptop purchased in France). The tab key is at the left end of the keyboard, next to the "A" key and below #,@,1,&. I unintentionally send/launch an e-mail when I (unintentionally) press the Tab key and then press Enter. This usually occurs when I don't press down squarely on the A key, thus pressing both the A and Tab keys virtually simultaneously, and then press Enter. I do not see in system preferences (keyboard) that "tab+Enter" is a shortcut, and I seek your advice on whether I can change the response of the laptop to the simultaneous pressing of those two keys. I use Yahoo mail, but I do not know if that matters.

MAC OS version 10.5.7
1.6 GHz Interl Core 2 Duo

i am a Mac user for years and I have some experience with troubleshooting and fixing/reinstalling Mac systems unfortunately I feel rather hopeless at the moment since I wasted hours and hours on trying to fix my 4months old iMac (the 27" edition).
Ok so first of all, the problems appeared after some Apple updates, (it was a few months since my last update), I installed the updates and restarted my system and suddenly finder was broken, it just freezes all the time and I can't seem to open it and browse through my files and when I force quit it just crashes again.
The only thing I can is use spotlight to browse for something (note that applications like iTunes and Photoshop work perfectly).
Feeling desperate in this situation I tried to reinstall my Mac, so I inserted my Mac Install discs and pressed the ALT key while booting. The disc appeared but when I press enter my iMac just freezes and doesn't do anything. I tried a PRAM reset at this moment but that didn't do it either. I even tried different versions of Mac installs but with the same result. In the end I even tried to run my Discwarrior boot disc but it also crashes. So I can't seem to boot anything except my messed up Snow Leopard install.
Note that I also tried booting from an external hard drive but with the same result.
At last I tried booting in single user mode and I used the "fsck -y" commando but that gave me some Disc Errors.
Ok lets get things clear, I want to format my Macintosh HD and peform a clean install, what should I do ?

I have a 1GHz, 12inch powerbook running OSX 13.9 and I have a problem where my airport connection wont allow me to connect to my wireless router.
I can see the connection in my airport but the 'OK' button in the dialogue box to enter the password is greyed out—reminds me of a criticism Steve Wozniak has of OSX where options in the GUI are greyed out but without any explanation of why, which gives you no chance of solving the problem or accessing the option. How frustrating.
The wireless connection had been working fine, but what would happen is once a week or so this problem would happen. Unplugging the router and plugging it back in would fix the problem. But that has failed to fix it over the last couple of days.
The wireless security is WPA personal, the router is a Belkin and the broadband modem is a Dynalink if that helps at all.
(please excuse the use of my, instead of me in the threads topic - ha)
