I run a new Mac Mini with up to date software. My timemachine backs up to an external HD plugged into a USB port on the mini. It backs up regularly and without any problems.
Yesterday I tried to enter time machine to restore some files I have lost. Whenever I select "enter time machine" nothing happens. The disk doesn't mount, the time machine icon doesn't spin, nothing happens.

I cannot enter the time machine when I press the time machine icon. I press and nothing happens, so I'm not sure even if it is backing up at this point. When i go to my Tme Capsule it has the folder there for back-ups and the most recent, but no access from the icon.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHave installed an 120GB SSD in my Macbook Pro 2010 but have had a couple of problems. Sometimes when you try to enter time machine and or Finder the machine freezes. Also the only way out of this is to hold the power button down and reboot. I have been informed by Apple that there are slight differences between the 2009 and 2010 models. Another odd thing is Skype will not load up automatically on startup, despite making sure this option is ticked. Most other things seem to work. Reinstall original hard drive and all OK.I have tried this with OCZ and Crucial SSDs and get same result. I have also installed the SSDs by cloning and by direct original OS X disk.

But when I try to enter Time Machine to go back and look for a file from a few months ago, the program will not open at all. I click on the icon and nothing happens. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I cannot enter Time Machine at all? P.S. This i a Macbook Pro mid-2010 with OS X Lion 10.7.3.

I cannot enter Time Machine—The backups are being created and I can manually navigate through the backup, but it simply will not load. I am running the 10.7.4 on a 2010 27" iMac.
I've tried everything that Pondini recommends including deleting finder.plist, disconnecting second monitor, resetting Time Machine from scratch, entering with Mail.app or Address Book as the foreground app, deselecting Time Machine drive, using a directly-connected USB drive instead of a network share, and starting Time Machine from another user account. I do not have a virus scanner or a Finder replacement.
Notes:I have symlinked a few folders in my home directory to another drive: Pictures being the important one. I've tried using a straight folder in each case.I do have a lot of apps running, notably: Viscosity, Alfred, Growl, Dropbox, Sparkleshare (though that is a recent addition)Perhaps the most important note: I replaced my iMac's optical drive with an SSD, which I am using as my system drive. The original 1TB drive is mounted elsewhere. I installed a fresh copy of Lion onto it.

I have a new MBP with MacOSX 10.7 I just set it up using the Migration Assistant. The old one was using MacOSX 10.5 with a Time Machine backup on an external USB drive. Everything went fine, restoring all from my Time Machine backup. But now, on the new MBP, I cannot enter in the old TM backup. I can browse it with the finder but not use it through the TM interface. If I chose the disk containing the old TM backup in the TM preference, TM starts a brand new backup. How do I have to proceed to continue using my old backup or almost be able to use it as a former one through the TM interface?

When I select 'Enter time machine' from the context menu of the time machine icon in the menu bar at the top, nothing happens. Otherwise it works fine and does its regular updates. I can see the result on my backup drive. But how do I now restore something if I have to?

I couldn't enter Time Machine backups, that is, "Enter Time Machine" from the Time Machine menu item did nothing. I tried Postini's recommendations about resetting, repairing the sparsebundle image, and tried accessing with the bundle mounted. Nothing worked.
What did work was Time Machine Preferences>Select Disk… and clicking Do Not Back Up. Then a new item appears in the Time Machine menu items: "Browse Other Backup Disks…" Selected that and then selected my backup. And then I was in.
My purpose was to delete some large movies that were taking up too much space. I went back to the Finder and opened the folder where the movies had been (I had deleted them in the Finder) then went back to "Browse Other Backup Disks…" and there was the folder in Time Machine. And I deleted the files. I was later able to reselect my Backup disk and the options were still saved.However I haven't seen the space recovered yet. I may have to read more on compressing the disk image if it doesn't fix itself soon.

I am unable to "Enter Time Machine" to view previous backups! Time Machine continues to make backups, and I can access other preferences and options but clicking on the Time machine icon in the dock or in the applications folders does nothing!! How do I remedy this - I have repaired permissions but am wondering do I need to reinstall Time Machine? If so how do I reinstall Time machine?

I have a simple Time Machine set up running on an external drive. I can access and open the drive, browse the contents and so on, but when I go to the Time Machine app and click "enter" nothing happens. Nothing at all. Running Disk Utility's repair function reported "incorrect permissions for private directory" which also reported that it was repaired. Running it again it says that the disk is verified. Still, Time Machine will not open when I want to enter.

I have a Mac Mini and two mac notebooks that run Snow Leopard. I've been backing these machines up to a 300 GB drive that is now full. Today I brought home a 2TB drive so that I can use Time Machine to backup the desktop Mac Mini. Can I use the same hard drive to use Time Machine for the two notebooks, as well? What about storing other backups on that drive as well? I'm just trying to map the most logical approach to having safe backups.

I just updated my iTunes but it appears it deleted my library. This sucks because I have spent hours upon hours sorting it, renaming crooked song titles, finding covers and all that stuff. I used time machine to back up my computer like 5 days ago, but I can't figure out how to use it. I wish I could just select that given day (when I made my last backup) and make it turn everything back to what it was back then. How do I do this exactly? I don't care at all if I have to go back to the old iTunes (obviously they will fix this eventually!) - I just want it to look like it did a few days ago.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Mini with two external WD MyBook's attached. The drive in question, is configured for Time Machine backups every four hours. It should sleep the rest of the time. But every once in a while, it wakes. I just revs up for no reason, then after a short while it goes back to sleep. It can happen when I open a folder, open a file, click a link in the browser or some other seemingly unrelated action.
I tried to untick the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" to see if I then at least could get the drive to stay awake instead. This did not change the behavior at all.
Does anybody have a clue what I can do, to get OS X to leave that drive the hell alone, other than Time Machine??
I want to back up the internal drive on my Mac mini as well as an external data rive using Time Machine with a dedicated second external drive.

When I hooked up the external drive I've been using for Time Machine to the MBP, I went through the setup for Time Machine and it created a backup of the MBP. That is the only backup now showing when I enter Time Machine. How do I access the previous backups from the Mac Mini through Time Machine? If I open the external hard drive from the finder, I can see the backups on the drive.

This is the second time it has happened, the first was with a powered USB Hard Disk, this time with a WD Elements HD. The first time, it crashed and popped up an alert saying the machine needed to be restarted.After restarting it continued, then around half way through it crashed again.It then would not boot as it said the Mac Mini's HD was corrupted.Tried to repair using the recovery mode, with no joy.Reformatted Hard Disk, went to recover using online recovery, got a 6002F error and it wouldn't reinstallTook to apple service centre, they wanted to charge to reinstall the OS (put them straight on that ).
Now it looks like it's doing it again, this time after the first crash I'm just copying the files I need manually to the external Hard Disk, which so far is OK.

I went to the Genius bar and they told me to Control, Option, P, R on a reboot to restore the settings, but with a wireless KeyBoard it does not work. I installed my standard PC keyboard, but am not sure what keys renase the display back to factory settings.

Question: Is it possible to use time machine to transfer some of the information (photos, music, files) from the external hard drive to the Mac Mini? Is it possible to extract the information from the hard drive by connecting it to the Mac Mini without using Time Machine?
I've been using my Intel Mac-Mini without a hitch for three years now. Previously it had been plugged into a Samsung 32" LCD TV, but I've just swapped it over for a 1080p Panasonic 37".
Now when I turn on the mac it takes a long time to boot up and then eventually settles on a blue screen. The mouse pointer is visible but nothing else. I've tried using a dvi to vga adaptor and an HDMI to vga cable and the same thing happens.I tried a 15" Samsung monitor and the same thing happens.
If I boot in 'safe' mode it allows me to type in my password but when I try to log in it fades to blue and then returns to the log in page.
Is it necessary to enter my iTunes password every single time I open iTunes? I understand the importance of entering the password if I'm browsing the store, but if I'm just playing around with my own library or ipod, why must I enter my password?

can't open the program time machine located in the folder /applications/time machine anymore, message says program ain't working for unknown reaason, but I still can open time machine in the menu bar. any clues what the trouble might be? and/or is there any way to reinstall time machine only on os x 10.7.3?

I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.
Just curious can use both to drive the 24" LED ACD AND another 2nd monitor via mini dvi?? That would be a dream come true!
