OS X :: Does SMB On Mac Share Over IPv6 As Well As IPv4?
Apr 30, 2008
Does SMB on Mac OS X share over IPv6 as well as IPv4? I would rather my sharing be limited to the local ipv4 and maybe 6 network, and not to the entire world. Are there any configuration settings I can play with in order to configure SMB in this respect?

I have been having problems with wifi on my Macbook Air 4,2 and I wanted to try turning off IPv6. However, when I go to network settings to do so, the option to turn it off is not there. I've included a screenshot to show you what I see when I go to network settings. I don't know why this option would have disappeared. Is there a program that could have disabled this? Â

I am using Macbook Air OS X Lion. I have been facing slow internet browsing problem from quite a while now. I checked the forums and found that lot of people are facing the same problem. Also found that disabling IPv6 or setting it to manual mode will help fixing the issue. But another big challenge is how to do it. I tried setting it to manual which would need router address, IPv6 address and prefix length which is supposed to be collected from your ISP. Unfortunately Comcast hasnt implemented IPv6 yet so couldnt find that information.

I am using free.fr in France, and IPv6 is enabled as part of the service. There are certain services running that were only accessible to the local network, but I now find that if I know the IPv6 address of the machine they are world accessible. I tried limiting services to be only accessible to the local machine, by adjusting the settings in the Firewall configurations in the system preferences, but the services still seem to be world accessible. Do the firewall configurations ignore IPv6? Is there any way to make it so that services are only available to machines in the local networks via IPv6. I suspect I going to need a command line tool or a third-party tool.

Why can't I ping my Lion Server via it's IPv6 address (using a tool on the provider's network) where IPv4 works all the time?

I am trying to get an older Macbook Pro running 10.5.1 online and it is not working. I'm currently using 3 other Macs on the WiFi network all running Snow Leopard, so I know that network works. I tried renewing the dhcp lease and I have it set to using dhcp and to configure ipv6 automatically, and there are 2 ip addresses under dns servers (I typed these in because they showed on my other MBP). I can't even upgrade the MBP because I have no ethernet cable and can't plug it in to update it. I can do to get it to work?Â

found today that 10.7.4-OS X doesn't handle IPv6-autoconfiguration.Â
At tcpdump I see the "Router Advertisments" but the configd can't answer with "Router Solicitation":
Jun 29 16:37:51 tksmac configd[16]: RTADV en1: send Router Solicitation: failed, Operation not permitted  All other devices in the same network works fine with IPv6 (autoconfig). Â

My airtunes was randomly breaking when trying to stream to my Airport Express and AppleTV. The dreaded (-15000) unknown error message kept appearing. Through searches here and elsewhere, I found a solution that has worked for me. I have turned off IPv6. System Pref >> Network >>Advanced >> TCP/IP >> Configure IPv6: set it to "off". It was on "Automatically" prior to my change. This switch fixed my problem with the airtunes streaming. My question is: Will this prevent me from fully utilizing anything else that my require IPv6? I'm not familiar with what that might be, or why we even need it. From what I've read, it's likely something needed or utilized on a large network, but at home, it seems unnecessary. Am I missing something or will I regret having to turn it off?

I have an Iomega 500GB external hard drive that I used exclusively with my MacBook. Then my Mac's hard drive crashed, and what I have on my external HD is all I have left. I also have a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop, and I would like to be able to get the Mac files off the HD, as well as add files from the Dell onto my external HD. However, as you know, you must usually format the HD to make it usable for PC once it is set up for use with a Mac.

When I enable sharing on Mac OS X, the only thing I can share is my user directory! I want to be able to share an external USB drive that is connected to my Mac over the network. I have OS X 10.4.

My girlfriend just got a new Macbook and we're trying to share files using AFP. In system preferences, I have (temporarily) allowed "everyone" privileges to read and write to my system, and she still can't access anything. It just says "connection failed" at the top of the window, and it doesn't give any other explanation other than that. If I type in my login credentials, it logs in just fine and I am able to read and write without any problems. In another thread, someone suggested repairing my disk permissions, and I get the following error:
Code:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired. In yet another thread, I was told not to worry about SUID Warnings, but... the warnings to ignore listed in the Apple KB i was directed to did not include this specific warning. I suspect this permissions error has something to do with why she is unable to connect as a "guest" and it's driving me nuts.

For a while, I had the Express G linked with WDS to my Extreme. A few weeks ago I picked up an Express N, which is now the main relay in my network. But the new Express uses a different method for WDS than the older G model. I've tried many things, but I can't get all 3 devices to play nice with one another.

I'm trying to share a printer that is connected to a Mac Pro with a Windows PC that sits adjacent to it. I've done the opposite before quite easily (share a printer connected to a PC with a Mac), but I've been having a time getting it working in reverse. Any idea how I might go about doing this? I've obviously enabled printer sharing but I'm having a difficult time getting Windows to see the printer.

I want to share lots of files with around 10 people, I would like to be able to share a folder on my Mac (running latest snow leopard) and allow users on Mac's to download the files onto their computer.
Any ideas?
I've found ways to make the Mac into an FTP server but a lot of the tutorials are too vague.

I was following some instructions on trying to get my time machine to backup to a Network Server SHARE on my home network, and I did one change that made time machine show it, and it tried and came back with a error 41 I believe it was. So I did some research on that, and ran some more commands to try and get it to allow the backup. Well after this, I am no longer able to connect to that SMB share anymore or ANY network share. I can't figure out how to fix this as I am not really familiar with MACs as good as some of you. Can anyone tell me how to fix this so I can access that share again?

she was having and we tried screen sharing but could not get it to work. It will connect for about 2 seconds and then disconnect. It doesnt give an error message other than "Connection could not be established. We've done it before with no issues. If I try sharing my screen with her it works with no problem. And we are able to do video chatting. We both use 10.5.5 and we are on good web connections.

I've just got a Samsung BD-P1500, which is enabled for "BD Live" Discs.
It has an ethernet port on the back which I would like to use to get online. Why not :-)
The router I have is too far away to have a direct ethernet connection, so I was wondering if I could use the ICS feature in OSX.
I've had it working for my Xbox previously and it worked fine. Only lag experienced was when I was surfing on the MacBook at the same time.

It would also be useful to have things such as my calendar, address book and iphotos shared between my machines too.
I'm just wondering what people think is the best way to do this and whether there are any cool applications out there which could make this integration easier.
