OS X Technologies :: Adding Folder Alias To Finder Sidebar In Lion With Apple-script?

Jun 11, 2012

I am creating 2 AppleScripts to automate mounting Windows shared drives on Lion Macbook Airs.  The first creates an alias on the user's desktop to the user's shared drive.  This is functional and doing what I want it to do. The 2nd script attempts to create a favorite to the alias in Finder's sidebar.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to get this script to work.

I am attempting to create an alias on a user's desktop to a folder in a Windows network share. Here is my applescript: set user_name to (short user name of (system info))tell application "Finder" activate set myFolder to ((home as text) & "Desktop:" & user_name)select myFolder tell application "System Events"  keystroke "t" using command down end tellend tell The script runs, Finder opens to the user's folder, but nothing is added to the side.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Replace Files In My Utilities Folder

Jun 19, 2012

I'm tired of having to jump thru hoops to replace files in my Utilities folder with updated versions. First I have to move the old file to the trash, but I have to enter my password. Then I copy the new file to the Utilities folder but, again, I have to enter my password. Much less user friendly than older versions of Mac OSX (and even Classic). I'm guessing it has to do with security, though I can replace files in the Applications folder without so much effort.I'm guessing the permissions of the Utilities folder have to be changed but changed to what? I want to be able to simply drag an updated application file to the Utilities folder and replace the old one without so much effort.

OS X :: How To Remove Alias (arrow) Symbol For Alias Icons

Jul 23, 2008

I want to create stacks for my Applications and put them in the dock by type. Utilities, Music & Video, iLife, etc. I think what I will do is make aliases for all the applications and put them in subfolders separate from the Applications folder, so then I have these 3-6 subfolders in my dock as stacks that I can display in Grid or Fan mode. And I don't have to see all my applications in one jumbled Grid and search for them.

Yes, I know Spotlight or QuickSilver could access them differently.

My question is, when I have created this duplicate system with the aliases to the apps, how do I remove the Alias (arrow) portion of the icon so that they look just like the actual icon down in the stack (or in my subfolders, etc)?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Open Music Folder

May 25, 2012

I moved some files around in my music folder, which made some of my music disappear. I attempted to restore the previous day's music file from time machine, but the restored file can't be opened--message says I don't have sufficient privileges. I went into the get info window and adjusted the permissions, still no luck. I also get a message that the music file is in use when I try to restore again. There is no little toggle arrow in front of the file. My entire music collection is on my iPod, but there seems to be no way to get it into my iTunes library from there.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Access Data (Music Files) In Folder On External Disk?

Jun 22, 2012

I am using a Mac Mini with OS X 10.7. I am having an issue with an external disk that was previously used as my main file source with an older Mac Mini. It seems there is a certain folder on the disk that I can't open or access that contains my lossless music files. When I look at the permissions it doesn't let me set them and also doesn't show "me", with the name I use to login to the system, as having access, or even showing up in the permissions on GetInfo.

Applications :: Reorganizing Music From "Music Collection" Folder To "iTunes Media" Folder?

Jan 1, 2010

so here is my problem with iTunes.

I have music with correct IDE tags in a "Music Collection" folder, though they are all unorganized and in sub folders. These folders have names like "Other iTunes", "More Music", "New Music", etc. I would like to reorganize all this music into one iTunes folder. I have gone into preferences and tried checkmarking the boxes "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when to library". My iTunes Media folder is a fresh new folder in "My Music". When I check that exact location, I see none of my music has moved there. All I see is an empty "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder. All my files are still in the unorganized "Music Collection" folder.

What can I do to literally move all my unorganized music files from this folder to a completely fresh and new iTunes Media folder, all with very organized sub folders categorized by artist and/or album? My main goal is to make an organized and updated library, because I spent a good amount of time deleting duplicates that have not gone to the recycle bin (and it would take FOREVER to find all those duplicates and delete them permanently).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Files Are Being Turned Into An Alias?

Apr 17, 2012

I am having some trouble with some new iMacs that are running Lion.  Sometimes they will turn a file into an alias.  It replaces the original with the alias and will not allow me to access the file any longer like the original is completely missing.  It seems to be random, it does not happen to one type of file or any one program.  It has happened on our servers (when copying pdfs and saving indesign files) and also locally.  I was able to find a temporary fix by downloading path finder and unchecking the "alias bit" option.  This seems to fix the issue at hand, but I need a more permanent solution, or at least something I can tell my users to avoid doing.

Software :: Can't Put Music Files In Music Folder

Dec 8, 2008

I have some sound effects that I have on my external hard drive that I want to listen to and add to my iTunes, but whenever I go to do that I get a message that says I don't have permission to write on my music folder. I am the only account on my Macbook Pro. I checked and I have the rights to read and write on my music folder. I don't know how to fix the problem. It also happens when I add music that I downloaded from the internet not iTunes. Sometimes with that I just have to hold option or command (I don't remember off the top of my head) and that'll let me copy the music into a folder that I created. How can I get permission to write into/onto my music folder for my Macbook Pro?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Are Finder Alias Files So Huge Lately

May 29, 2012

Why are alias files so big now? Before (OSX 10.3), they were rarely bigger than 1 KB, but now (OSX 10.7), they're often up to 1.6 MB!  Can we do something to keep them small?   As I understand it, an alias is just a pointer or reference to another file.  When you open or print it, the operating system actually opens or prints the original file referenced.  All that needs to be stored is the directory path to the original file, either (or both) as a full reference or a relative reference, plus its file system ID and perhaps a drive ID (in case it's moved).  This should take only a few bytes.  On prior Mac operating system versions (e.g., 10.3.9), these alias files were just a few hundred bytes in size, rarely over 1,400 bytes total.  But now I notice that, under Mac OS 10.7, newly created alias files are always hundreds of KB large, and can typically be as huge as 1.6 MB!  The custom icon only accounts for a fraction of this size.  However, sometimes they can still be as small as before (only a few hundred bytes).  Old aliases from a prior OS version (usually but not always) still work in opening their original file, so apparently we don't need the extra size.  So, what is in these files?!  I know these are analogous to "shortcut" files under MS Windows, which are not that large.   Having aliases be so huge defeats the purpose of a small file reference that can be used in multiple other places.  One would like to use an alias so as to not have to keep a copy of a large file.  But I notice that MB-sized aliases are often created even when the original file is a tiny 1 KB file.  Moreover, a larger original file might create a smaller alias than that for a smaller original file, even when both original files are in the same folder.  What gives?   I use aliases extensively, so as to keep references to the same original file in multiple folders, since these files fall into the multiple categories that each folder contains.  By using aliases, I ensure that there is only a single "master" version that is edited when a file is opened from any of those folders.  Many of the original files are pretty small, yet their aliases are many orders of magnitude bigger.  This is very discouraging towards using this handy feature.  Is there something I am doing wrong to end up making them so big – perhaps a system setting?  What is in these files that they need to be so huge? I suppose I can use Unix symbolic link files by using a command line in Terminal, such as 'ln -s originalfile linkfile', but these are less functional, since you can't move or rename the originalfile without breaking the linkfile's association to it.

Using Finder and navigating to Alias works fine; files open, can be modified and resaved. ITunes For Mac :: How To Replace Incorrect Song Paths To Correct Folder

Aug 25, 2014

Long story short, I've been trying to move my entire iTunes from a NAS to my Mac and it's got messy and I'm left with a situation whereby all the songs are safe on the Mac in the correct folders, e.g. Bruce Springsteen songs in the correct album folder in the Bruce Springsteen parent folder, HOWEVER, when I try to play certain songs (not all) on iTunes it skips over the track and doesn't even highlight it with an "!". When I check the file path it will show iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Madonna (for Bruce Springsteen).

So, my question is, how can I now re-associate the songs paths in iTunes app with the correct folders? Is there a script or can I somehow reimport the songs? I'm not worried about losing ratings, last played, play count, etc. but I wouldn't want to lose my playlists.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Accented Characters Lost In Description Of Alias Email Address

May 16, 2012

I recently noted that accented characters are lost in long name description of email alias address when using Mail.app but ok when using webmail in iCloud.com Setup in the prefs of the master mail account in iCloud, the long name description for the corresponding alias.is transcripted as "Frdric" in Mail.app when selecting the sender address in the dropdown list box. However, all is fine when using webmail within iCloud.com The problem appears only with OSX not with iOS.

I have been using my alias with accented char in its long name description for the last 4 years with Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion until recently. I can replicate on 3 differents Macs. Even tried to create a new user account.

OS X :: Unable To Copy Music Files / Merging All Music Files In One Folder?

Sep 25, 2010

I finally ripped my music into digital format. It is a very large library so I performed the rips in four segments creating four folders of music. The highest level folders are Music1, Music2, Music3, Music4. The next layer folder is the artists name, then album name, then the actual MP3S.

How do I merge the folders? If I perform a copy the first artist name is sees that already is exists, the finder wants me to skip the copy or replace the folder that is there. I simply want to add the folder or merge it. Is there a "merge" function in OSX? I tried Carbon Copy but it will not copy or sync fils on the same disk.

OS X :: Recovering Data ... "Replace Folder" Dialog

May 8, 2006

I'm a really recent switcher, with a long history with PCs. So far, the experiences have been great, but tonight, my PC history became a liability. I'm pretty handy with a Windows-based, so I know my way around the system quite well. But I was working on my Mac tonight. Having made my G4 PM my server, I was starting to move a folder from one drive to another, when decided that I wanted to reconsider where I was putting the folder. The process cancelled successfully and I had about 1 MB at the destination, and 50 GB still left on the source.

Having canceled it, I wanted to remerge my folder back to the original folder. Simple, right? I dragged the smaller folder onto the 50 GB folder, and OS X prompted me to replace. There is a similar dialog on Windows - in fact, it is titled "Confirm Folder Replace" - that merges the folders together. I didn't think twice about it all and clicked yes... And OS X promptly deleted my 50 GB folder and left the 1 MB folder in its place. My bad. Having said that, what's the best way to recover my 50 GB worth of information? I haven't mucked with the machine so much, so I'm not afraid that the data's being overwritten. But how the heck do I get back to it?

Applications :: New Files In ITunes Music Folder?

Jan 17, 2009

I'm trying to bring all my music files from my Windows computer so I copied all my music files from my Windows computer to my external hard drive, and then copied from the external hard drive to my iTunes music folder in my new iMac. When I compared the info between my iTunes music folder, and the music files on my external hard drive, the iTunes music folder had more files. By looking through the files it looks like two extra files were added to each album folder....a "folder.jpg" file and a "AlbumArtSmall.jpg" file was created. I know that these are only pic files, but I didn't have those files when all my music files were on my Windows machine, how come they show up now? Are those two files necessary? Can I just delete those?
