OS X :: Disk Utility - Formatting A Partition Without Erasing The Whole Drive?

Mar 31, 2009

I've been backing up my Powerbook G4 for a few months using Time Machine to an external firewire drive with two partitions; one for the backups, and a much larger one for all my music, video, pictures, etc. I got a new mac mini over the weekend and I want to format the Time Machine partition without erasing the one with all my other files so I can start backing up the Mini.

Is this possible using Disk Utility? If so, how?

Both computers are running Leopard.

Windows On Mac :: Formatting As Single OSX Volume (Removing Ubuntu Partition)

Jul 2, 2010

Now, I set up a partition to run Ubuntu on my MacBook, but now I want to remove that partition to make room for Windows XP. When I go to Boot Camp Assistant, I try to click 'Continue' but it gives me this: I thought I could fix the problem using Disk Utility, but I couldn't understand what I could do. I thought it would work by erasing them, but I may have made the problem worse. Here is what it looks like: I tried booting the Ubuntu disc as I read I could remove the partition using that, but I don't understand how that would work.

MacBook Pro :: Formatting My Hard Drive And Installing Leopard?

Dec 26, 2007

I think I'm going to format my hard drive to delete everything from it and start fresh with leopard. I already have leopard installed, but I think I should just format my hard drive (after backing up what I truly need like my music and other files) and then just install leopard.

Question, I have read that I go to disk utility to do this (format and install leopard), is this correct? If so, what else do I need to know before I do this?

OS X :: Formatting Hard Drive And Installing Snow Leopard?

Jan 24, 2010

I am having problems with my I-Mac. It is the 2.8GHZ 24" model and when I try to start it up I get a white screen with a blinking grey file folder with a "?" mark in it??

I had this problem before. Erased the hard drive and then reinstalled everything. I made it through it but I think I may have done it wrong. Anyways the computer worked good till the other day. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and now it is doing it again.

Do I need to start with the install disk 1 that came with the computer and install disk 2, then install snow leopard? Or can is there a faster route of doing this?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Formatting A WD Elements 3TB External Drive?

Apr 14, 2012

I am, I hope, at the end of a 36+ hour formatting process with this WD Elements 3TB external drive. I decided to zero out the drive and when I went to bed last night at around 12am, there were about 6 hours left in the process. This morning at aroud 9am I went to check on the drive, expecting it to be ready to go, but I found it writing a temporary file. The progress bar is about 90% done. Is this part of the normal zeroing out process? If so, how long should this take? If this ISN'T part of the normal process, what should I do?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Boot From Snow Leopard Partition

Feb 12, 2012

I have a Macbook Pro from 2008. It previously just had one partition, with Lion on it.

I created a new partition for Snow Leopard

I installed Snow leopard from a retail disk on the second partition. The installation went fine, and I got the message at the end that the installation was successful, and to restart the computer.

When I restart it, it just goes to the gray Apple screen, with the spinning gear, and never gets farther than that. The gear is spinning.

I can still boot successfully into Lion. Once I booted into Lion, I chose the Snow Leopard partition as the Startup Disk, but the same thing happens - just the gray Apple screen and spinning gear. I've let the machine sit for half an hour in that state, but it still does nothing but the spinning gear.

why I can't boot successfully into Snow Leopard and how I can fix it?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Can't Load On An Empty Partition

Jul 5, 2012

In February I bought a new Mac Book Pro that came loaded with OS X Lion.  I want to run Final Cut Pro on it.  I bought FCP on ebay but can't load it because it is a PowerPC app and Lion won't load it.

I added a partition to my hard drive to load Snow Leopard, bought SL online and am trying to install SL.

If I try to run the install app from within Lion I get this message:  "You can't use this version of the application install Mac OX X.app with this version of Mac OS X."  Then in small print this:  "You have Install Mac OS X.app 23.1"

If I try to boot from the SL Install DVD I get this message:  "You need to restart your computer.  Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again."  I do this and it always comes back to this same message.

I tried booting to the Recovery HD but can't get that to allow anything either.

MacBook Pro
