OS X :: Can Backup Files With Blank Blu Ray Discs
Jul 8, 2010
So I have a Macbook (13" 2008 model) and iMac (20" 2006 Intel Core Duo model) and just purchased Snow Leopard to upgrade the machines. Given my preference for a clean install, I would obviously need to back up my data. However, my back up external drive broke a little while back and trying to get another one (I'd need 1 TB) just isn't feasible financially at the moment.
So with the option of backing up the files to blank Blu Ray discs being a cheaper option, would that be possible? Or does Apple not supporting Blu Ray affect this? Or does it only affect official motion picture Blu Ray discs?

i have a powermac g5 dual 1.8 tower. the dvd burner is a pioneer dvd-rw dvr-107d. according to the system profiler, this should be able to burn either - or +R discs and cds. also, the computer belonged to a friend who was using it to burn dvds up until the day she delivered it to me.
i switched out the harddrive and reinstalled everything fresh (in case that matters.)
now when i put in a blank dvd or cd (different brands, different formats) it comes up with an error message that says: This disc cannot be used because it is not recognized.

My MacBook Pro running OSX Lion no longer recognizes blank discs: the disc does not appear on the desktop or in finder.
When I try to burn a playlist from iTunes I get the error message: "The burner is in use by another application".I am also unable to eject the disc using Disk Utility and have to reboot to get the disc out.Other media discs (software, music etc.) are read without a problem.
Info:MacBookPro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I just bought the new 24" iMac and I looked at the backup discs and they said it could install OSX Tiger. I also have an old iBook G4 I got my moms friend who moved. I know the iBook could handle 10.4 as it has 10.3.9 now but what I was wondering was. If I could install the OS on the iBook from the iMac backup discs. I but the disc in the iBook and it wanted me to restart to begin the installation of OSX but I quickly backed out. Do you guys think If I proceed with the installation it will install smoothly or, should I just forget about it.

I have a question about upgrading the harddisk on my unibody macbook (last year's model). I have done a time machine backup and the macbook is running snow leopard. However, I currently don't have the snow leopard DVD with me, only the leopard DVD that came with the macbook. Can I still do the hard disk upgrade? In other words, can I boot with the leopard DVD, and restore back to snow leopard via time machine or do I need the snow leopard dvd?

My friend and I are trying to move some software from her old computer to a new one. She burned a large installer .dmg file to two CDs, in 4 parts. Even having both discs loaded into the computer (one in the internal drive, the other in an external), we can't get the main .dmg file to recognize the two parts from the other disc.
When we try to copy the .dmg and .dmgpart files from the disc to the hard drive, we end up getting an error message, and Finder basically freezes. Is there any way to make this work with what we've got, or were they burned incorrectly to begin with?
The error message says:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'XXXXX.004.dmgpart' could not be read or written. (Error code - 36)"
The old computer is out of the picture right now, so we can't just copy the file(s) directly from there.

I came home for vacation and decided to reformat my imac g5 to get a fresh start. I backed up all my files, took out my leopard retail box, and was ready to go when I opened up the box, and noticed no disc. I have no idea where it went.I have the install discs from the computer when i got it, but it only has 10.4, so id rather not use them. I have the install discs from my macbook pro with 10.5, but I am pretty sure it will not work.So does anyone have any suggestions? Should I just go ahead and install 10.4 until and then just install 10.5 when i find it? (i really hate doing this, I hate having more than one version of an os installed)

i have recently been having trouble opening .pdf files properly. they open but they are all blank pages. they open as blank files in "preview", it doesnt open at all using adobe digital additions and through microsoft word i get gibberish or i get pop ups that say "word cannot open this document. the document might be in use or might not be a valid word document" ive downloaded over 5 times and each time i try with all three options and i get the same thing.
i tried to pull it into iArchiver but that also didnt work.
the file ends with .pdf
also although several other documents have done the same thing i know something is not completely wrong with my .pdf thing or any of those applications because other pdf files do open.
i tried to give as much information right at the beginning so forgive me if its too long.

I have recently bought a MacBook Pro. I installed Pages '09 and it was working well in the beginning. Soon, though, it began to give me trouble. Whenever I try to save a file and open it later, the file is opened as a blank document. This occurs with both pages and .doc files. Sometimes I can save the text in the file by using command+A and dragging the text over into text edit. But this does not always work.Recently, when I open the application, the template chooser appears but is blank.

I am getting the following error from Time Machine when doing my first backup. The startup disk being backed up, and the TM disk are both the same size.
Macintosh HD: 465.44 (total); 393.99 (free); 71.45 (free)
Time Machine: 465.44 (total); 465.29 (free)
The Time Machine error is: Quote:
"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 472.7 GB but only 465.3 GB are available." why would this be? Other disks are excluded from the backup, and Time Machine is telling me that it needs more space than it actually needs. What should I do?

I have large archive files from work (each ~10-20 GB) that we'd like to just backup onto DVDs and store in a safe. Obviously, each individual file is too big to fit on a DVD (even the double layer ones). Is there a "compress and split" sort of software that could be used for this?

When I look at the "About This Mac" -> "More Info..." -> "Storage" it shows my Time Machine and my system Hard Drive. On the system Hard Drive it is showing Backups at 60GB. Where do I find those backup files to remove them? Or what type of files does that include? Is there a tool to delete these files? I have looked at other systems and have not seen any backups by default on the systems so I figure they should be readily accessible to delete.

which I'd like to exclude from the backup .
Is Time Machine capable of doing this ...

I have never made a backup file for my computer before. How do I do this? I have avoided it because I assumed I would need to save each file individually on a flash drive, which I don't have the time to do. There must be an automatic shortcut? I have a MacBook Pro 10.6.8.

Is there any program that will smartly back up my files? For example, I have all my music backed up to my external, but every month or so i have a couple new bands, albums in, that I don't really remember. So basically I want a program that will scan both folders, find what files are missing in the external and copy only those files over.
