I have large archive files from work (each ~10-20 GB) that we'd like to just backup onto DVDs and store in a safe. Obviously, each individual file is too big to fit on a DVD (even the double layer ones). Is there a "compress and split" sort of software that could be used for this?
View 3 RepliesI'm hoping theres something better than me having to crawl through a huge number of files and folders in order for me to know what I can toss off of one hd because I have another copy on another hd that I want to keep. Everything I accumulated and want to keep, I've saved on one hd and put a backup on another drive. But now I'm trying to consolidate some things and toss other things as well as a lot of new stuff I have yet to backup so its getting mixed up.
So I have a ton of crap and I'm trying to make sure I'm not trashing anything I want by mistake. So I'm finding I have to open multiple windows of my hard drives and go through hundreds of files, one by one, to see if I have a copy on another drive so I can either find the backup copy or if its a single file that I need to make a backup of. So is there any kind of thing where I can correlated, or match up, a large number of files on one drive in spotlight or something, to the same files on another drive instead of doing it one dam file at at time?
Is there any way to find and delete large "unwanted" files from a Time Machine backup on a Time Capsule? Lets say you have some big ISO-files you want to remove but don't know at what date they were backed up.I tried to mount the Time Machine backup image and locate big files with GrandPerspective but it didn't really work.

copying DVD's. When I had a PC, I used to use DVD shrink to convert large Dual layer DVDs down to sizes that would fit on a single layer DVD. I downloaded mac the ripper and it works, but it does not downsize DVD's.

Well TM is acting up. I get an error that reads: "This backup is too large for the backup volume."
Both the internal boot disk and the external baclup drive are 1TB. The internal one has a two partitions, the OSX one that is 900GBs and a 32GB NTFS one for Boot Camp. The external drive is a single OSX Extended part. that is 932GBs.
Both the Time Machine disk, and the Boot Camp disk are excluded from the backup along with a "Crap" folder for temporary large files.
Time Machine says it needs 938GBs to backup only the OSX disk, which has 806GBs in use with the rest free. WTFFF?
This happened after moving a large folder (128GB in total) from the root of the OSX disk over to my Home Folder.
I have reformated the Time Machine drive and have no backups at all of my data and it refuses to backup!!
Why would it need 938GBs of space to backup if the disk has "only" 806 GBs in use??? Is there anyway to reset Time Machine completely???

The TM needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Upen TM perferences to select a LARGER backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding file.
Okay I;m sorry but obvioulsy I dont get this. I've never called Apple for help! I have every product they sell practically including Protection Plans I never used and no one will help me with this. My MAC is starting to have black or white screens and i can hear it running but it will not do anything so i have to reboot it, it screws up Enturage and then I have to rebuild that ( 5 times this year) anyway... I would like to back everything up- can I delete everything on the Time Capsule or Time Machine; god I dont even know what it is called Im so MAD... help if you can please. I'm going to have to take this to the genius people at the store and probably buy another computer but like before they will not save my files.

as a backup for the dvds i already own. just gotta new unibody macbook, can i rip dvds onto it, and then burn them onto a blank dvd?

Internal iMac HD
Firewire external HD (music)
USB external HD (Time Machine)
I have Time Machine back up the internal and firewire (music) drives. The initial backup takes up appx. 290GB of my 500GB TM drive. Subsequent backups function as normal, until a restart.
I have just spent many hours editing and importing songs in a large playlist in iTunes. I want to back those up so I don't have to do it all over again. I talked to tech support. She was nice in directing me to do a 'Time Machine' back up. It died after about 30 minutes.
I restarted everything and tried to remember her directions. Time Machine started and backed up about 66k... yes 'k'.. and it projected it would take about 4000 days to finish backing up my 1.6 or so g.. yes gigs. I don't trust do everything backup processes.
How can I do Time Machine in a reasonable time? How can I back up an iTunes playlist on a jump drive or a usb hard drive? She sent me 3 e-mails that were supposed to tell me just how to do a back up. The e-mails just linked me to the same Apple support pages.

I recently discovered, after running Disk Inventory X, some really fat files in my Library. I haven't touched them, as I read on another forum that it could be dangerous but is there anything I can do to get rid of them? I thought maybe they were left there after a recent Time Machine backup because I read that happening to someone else in another forum...

I had been using Retrospect 6 since the early 1990's, and it was absolutely wonderful and a delight to use. But the new Retrospect 8 � which I have been trying to use unsuccessfully for almost a year now � is just horrible. The product changed hands several times and has a new set of programmers, and the product has literally thousands of bugs and is completely unreliable. Retrospect 8 may very well be the worst piece of Macintosh software that I have EVER used in 17 years of business. If you check the Retrospect 8 forums, you will see that I am far from alone on this opinion!
So, Retrospect is no longer a viable option anymore as backup software.
I am using Time Machine with my external drive. And since my external hard disk does not have too much capacity, from the time machine options I excluded some folders like movies, music etc. So in time machine preferences it seems it needs 42gb for backup. And it was working like this, backing up 42gb and everyday just backing up changes like 100mb. So in hard drive more or less 50gb was used..70gb free. Until last week.
Suddenly it appeared an error like this "This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 128 GB but only 97 GB are available". I do not have any idea how this can happen since my backup size seems like 42gb still in options. How it can require 128GB suddenly? Also how can I have 97GB available? I had 70GB last week? I tried to include everything in backup options and exclude again but it does not work. Still I see there 42gb needed for backup but when I connect the drive I am still getting the same error!
What if a Time Machine backup was created on a Mac with a large hard disk, e.g. 500GB iMac - and I buy a new MacBook Air with a small SSD hard disk e.g 128GB. What happens when I need to use the larger Time Machine file to set up the new MacBook Air? What happens to all those files that can't fit on the smaller SSD drive?

The illustrator vector files are fairly compressed but the photoshop raster files can be extremely large. Sometimes, I have someone wishing to send me a large portfolio folder, or I find I may want to send a big file to someone else. As an example, I recently had an artist send me a hi-res portfolio of his book covers to be made into a promotional DVD for comic-con. One of the CD's he sent me had the wrong pics on it, so I had to wait for the correct pics to be sent, which delayed the project several days. I can compress a single file for emailing, but can not drop the resolution as a way to minimize folder size if the file is going to be printed. I work predominantly on a mac, but many of my customers use windows based operating systems.
What is the best method for sending and receiving large digital files from a variety of customers? If I get an FTP site, can I keep one client from accessing someone else's folders? I noticed that Skype allows for file transfer... is VOIP practical for sending large files? This month's macworld made mention of a bit torrent program for such a chore. What about using a bit torrent program such as Transmission for creating a bit torrent folder for moving large files to a single customer? Are paid services available? Is a paid service the best choice? I am looking for a method that I can both send and receive these large files. It should be easy enough for a less than tech savvy customer to send me files after I give them a minimal explanation of how to do it. I needed to make 40 dvd's. My burner is burnt out on my mac. I've created all the dvd's as iso files with iDVD. Now I need to transfer them to my PC that has a functioning burner. SOOOO... transferring 81.5 GB of data over a network will take days. Having said that, I'm using an unsecured network that drops out frequently. (I just moved in, it'll be weeks until the phone company can hook up my internet... we just had a hurricane and they're busy with repairs). Next idea, use a flash drive. Most of the iso files are bigger than 4Gb - so FAT32 is out. What's left?
which sounds promising, but once the files are split, how do I join them back together on my PC? Oh, and did I mention that this job is for a client and they're waiting on it. STRESS!!

I have a brand new unibody macpro which came with 10.6. I am unable to print large files onto my HP z3200 (500 mb or greater) with Photoshop CS3. I can print the from LightRoom 2.5 with no problem but would far rather print from Photoshop. HP doesn't seem to have much of a clue about this.

When I try to play back I receive error message "The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands." How to play? I have Quicktime Player 10 running from Snow Leopard. Inside the folder for the event in imovie it shows the movie file but with a zero kb size. Also has an imovie cache folder.

I need to process large files (few GB) from a measurement. The data files contain lists of measured events.I process them event by event and the result is relatively small and does not occupy much memory.The problem I am facing is that Lion "thinks" that I want to use the large data files later again and puts them into cache (inactive memory). The inactive memory is growing during the reading of the datafiles up to a point where the whole memory is full (8GB on MacBook Pro mid 2010) and it starts swapping a lot. That of course slows down the computer considerably including the process that reads the data.
If I run "purge" command in Terminal, the inactive memory is cleared and it starts to be more responsive again. The question is: is there any way how to prevent Lion to start pushing running programs from memory into the swap on cost of useless harddrive cache?
