I have a two year old 13" mac laptop. 10.5.6 / 2 GHZ Intel core duo/2GHz667MHz. My problem is this: within the last month the brightness setting has shifted from bright to dull all by its self. Each time I move the slider up (pref. display) it moves down so that my screen is difficult see.

When I start, the brightness is at maximum... I set it to minimum, only to find it at maximum again when I re-boot the computer ! I tried setting it via settings as well... it just dosent stick !
On the flip-side, the volume retains its last settings.
Are the led's under the keys auto controlled due to the amount of light in the room? I use my MacBook pro on battery most of the time and every time I go to turn up the keyboard brightness its in a different place. I want to set it to be at a specific brightness when its plugged in and when its running on battery, at a lower brightness but the same every time. I want to be able to have settings for the led brightness.

The enduring issue I've had with all of Crudbooks (well, among many other issues - but they've usually been different for all models/refreshes of Crudbooks) is the screen brightness on AC and battery. It doesn't seem to intelligently switch in the way that for example Windows does. Or to put it more specifically, it doesn't seem to remember brightness settings for AC and battery modes that well.
It is of course the matter of a few seconds to adjust the brightness but I wonder if there's a way of doing it automatically. A potentially basic question, but something I've never bothered to find the answer to. Any takers?
What setting do you use on your new MacBook Air? I'm currently at an older non-LED MacBook, and when working with the LED-screens on the newer MBPs I kept noticing that I couldn't really find a proper backlight settings. The top 3 where OK but everything was almost too bright, while lower settings made everything look very dark and greyish.
I played around with the Airs a bit in the store, and I think they were very similar in that regard. But it's hard to say because of the store lighting and not being able to use it in various situations with different lighting.
the monitor's default brightness setting is far too bright for my eyes, so the first thing I did was to open the System Preferences pane and reduce the brightness setting. That worked fine until I shut the computer down. On rebooting, the brightness returned to its default highest setting. On my older iMac G5, the brightness setting always stayed put. It isn't a huge problem since adjusting the brightness setting does work, but I don't want to have to adjust it every time I reboot my computer.
I spent two hours yesterday on the phone with Apple support trying to fix the problem, even going so far as to reinstall the system software with no success. The woman on the phone finally suggested that I return the Mac for a replacement.
Has anyone else here with a 2009 iMac experienced this problem? Is it possible that it's hardware related? If so, could this be the tip of the iceberg suggesting a potentially larger problem down the road? I would have guessed it might be a software glitch. (The new iMac has thrust me, finally, into Leopard; until last week I was using Tiger on my older G5.) I bought the 3-year Apple Care with it--since the new iMacs have only been out a week, should I wait until the next Leopard update and see if that fixes the problem?
I need to change the color and brightness for a video file for a presentation and cannot figure out how to change them permanently when I open the video file in Powerpoint. When I open a video which I have altered the AV settings on in another program, the settings revert to the initial settings. Can I edit the color and brightness settings permanently in Quicktime 7?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAll of a sudden, every time I reboot, my screen's brightness is all the way up. So, I go to 'Preferences' and bring it down to only happen again the next time I reboot. Not a terrible problem, I hope, but not sure why the settings of this doesn't remain as I left it last. Perhaps I have picked up something OR I have a fault which could get worse?Anyone seen anything like this?

But I've been getting huge amounts of eye strain so am wondering whether to turn in down some more, say to 50-75%, but worried that will strain my eyes even more. View 10 Replies View RelatedMy wife has an iMac (I don't know any other way to identify it e.g. model number), and she has this 3rd party calibration software that I'm trying to use. I am not used to a Mac, and I cannot find the display settings for the monitor. There are no buttons on the monitor, and when I go to preferences, I can only find the brightness control. I've googled this and cannot find a clear, simple answer. I have used every version of Windows (currently on 8.1 on my PC) and it's easy for me on that platform. I suppose it's just that I don't really know how to navigate Mac OS.

Why does my screen look dull? It's not dull like when you stop charging it, nor is it as bright as when it is charging, it's about in between. I have it plugged in and the battery constantly reads 95% never 100%. The little green dot is on the charger input and the battery symbol shows that it is being charged so I know it's charging. What reason would be why my screen is not as bright as before?

This morning I found my iMac G5 was accidentally left on all night. The screen saver was running so I didn't think there was a problem. However, my screen is now noticeably darker than it was yesterday. I've checked all the settings and they all appear fine. The brightness is set to 100%. My co-worker has the same iMac as me and her screen in set at 50% brightness and still looks brighter and crisper than mine. I've restarted, shut down, left off for about 10 minutes, no change.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhenever turning on my computer, my webclip shifts to an area it's not supposed to be. It doesn't do this as long as it's on, even when I go out and into Dashboard. What I do:
1) Safari > Preferences > Advanced > "Check Never use font sizes smaller than (28)"
2) File > Open in Dashboard
3) Edit to smallest size
4) Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Uncheck "Never use font sizes smaller than (28)"

I set the dock to appear on the left side of my screen with auto-hide turned on and magnification turned off. It's not at full size. I like to keep my windows maximized such that they take up the entire screen. What I've noticed, however, is that when I put the dock on the sides and open a window for any application (Safari, outlook, etc), it'll be shifted to the right just a little bit. This makes part of the desktop background visible, as the application window isn't covering the entire screen. I know it's not a big deal, but it kind of bugs me and I keep on moving the windows back to maximize the screen, but it keeps on shifting to the right. How do I prevent this? I thought it might be because the dock was too big, but really, it's not.

Images in Preview and Safari have a completely different colorcast than in Photoshop. AKA system is showing colors way off. Any ideas ? This bug has been verified so far in two different systems with CS3 and CS4 and it is very real. I'm using calibrated monitor with a profile of 2.2 gamma.

I have a Epson 3800 and I have been printing a PSD file from my windows laptop and everything works fine, checked colour profile and everything is the same. The Mac has CS4 and the laptop CS3, I let the printer handle the colours. When I print from the Mac the colours come out dull and flat. I am using Epson Velvet Fine Art Paper 13 X 19. Just wasted 2 sheets plus ink!
View 8 Replies View RelatedThe brightness goes up when you plug in your MBA, but then over time it just goes up and up. I honestly like my brightness pretty low (rarely more than half, typically at 3-5 notches), but it just keeps on going up and up. I almost never set it above half, but multiple times a day, I notice that it looks pretty high and it's at like 3/4 so I put it it down to about 1/3, but after a while, it's just up again.
Anyone else notice this? What is it, why does it do this? How can I fix it? I don't mind not having auto-brightness (even though I loved it), as long as my screen doesn't keep going up.

Somehow, Foxconn has a hit or miss on quality control, especially the issues we encounter like warped lids, dust under the glass, dead pixels, bad ram, black screen of death, video artifacts, etc. Does this CHANGE of manufacturers mean better quality control?

I went to Best Buy yesterday and they just got the new imacs in and had on display side by side. The 21.5 display was not as bright and vibrant as the 27 display. The apple and best buy guys could not tell me why the difference. The settings were checked and found to be the same for both machines. I was going to get the 21.5 but now not so sure. I definitely like the brighter 27 better. Is this normal? Why is the 27 brighter? Has anyone else noticed the difference?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a G5 Duel 2GHz Power PC, Recently I was losing the time, date and wireless settings so I assumed as my machine is now 4 years old the PRAM battery was up for renewal.This has now been replaced but I'm still losing my settings, not all the time but randomly, sometimes I lose my wireless key sometimes I lose time and date sometimes both, this can happen daily.
I have removed the (New) Battery and checked the voltage and it reads 3.6 Volts, I haven't checked this under load though, so presuming that the battery is OK, what else could cause this.. a failing System Board?
I have had my MacBook Pro now for a little over 2 yrs and I was very frustrated I could not change any print options in any application. I know that the Triangle button expands print options screen but when I do, I have only two print choices. It gave me Standard or Page Attributes in Office and any other App it is Standard and Last used settings. I can't print in Draft, Best or other setting because it does not even give them as a choice. I have two high end color photo printers, Canon i9900 and Epson Photo series and an old HP830 series. Any app I tried to print from and the same thing. I tried to capture the options on the choices but it would not grab that part of the image but here is my screen shot. I searched many forums and I still get the same answer so something else is not letting me change things so I figured best to ask since I am a 20 year win user now switched to Mac. Well right after I posted this question, my wife found the answer. I never though to check the application NAME in the print setting screen. Example, in the screenshot I am using Preview. I never thought to hit the up/down arrow next to the Preview label and wouldn't you know, that is were the quality and several other settings were. I felt pretty stupid that it took 2 years to figure this out but if I posted the answer maybe someone else will not have to take as long as I did to change their print quality!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was using my MBP when I noticed that the display (the built in one) looked a little washed out. To make sure my color profile was set to the correct one, I opened up the display panel in System Preferences. The moment I opened it, the display snapped back to its regular appearance. As far as I can tell, it goes into the washed out version after going to screensaver and coming back, and going into display prefs is the only way to restore it. Anyone seen this before or know how to keep it from doing this?
View 2 Replies View Relatedfor my macbook pro, it has a button that will kill the keyboard light, then restore it when pressed again, i need a button, or an app with a hot key, that does the same thing for the LCD backlight, i often leave the machine on and that requires the lid being open, so i have to hold down the dim button until it goes out, then restore it the same way, so thats what im looking for any ideas?
