OS X :: Applying Settings To Workgroup Manager Locally?
Jan 7, 2010
Im running snow leopard (10.6) and running Workgroup Manager from the 10.6 admin pack. Im trying to set up mobile accounts but when i try to save the settings i get " Error while saving record, The directory system schema does not support storing Managed Desktop settings." The mac is binded to AD and im logging in as a AD user. Do i really need to extend the Schema on the network? or is there a work around?

I'm trying to connect to a 10.5 server from a 10.7 machine with Workgroup Manager.
After a long timeout, I'm getting the message, "An error of type -14910 occurred." I can connect fine from a 10.6 machine with Workgroup Manager.Â

We are a school and recently just added a few students so they can log in with their own user name. When the new students try to log in they get this message "You are unable to log in to the user account "user name". Logging in failed because an error occurred. The home folder for the user account is located on a AFP or a SMB server."I logged on Workgroup Manager and it shows every student and teacher has their home folder on the AFP server. And they all look set up the same. I do not know what the problem is or how to fix it!

I am setting up OS X Server (Advanced configuration) on a Mac mini. At some time I added a group and then deleted it. I now wish to add this group again and the Workgroup Manager GUI claims that the Name and Group ID already exists although I seem to be able to re-use the Short Name. Also if I try to add group permissions to a shared folder using Server Admin this Group Name/Group ID appear in the list of groups. How can I tidy this up? Another variation of this occurs when I create a shared folder. This also appears as a group when adding group permissions, but not in Workgroup Manager. Why should this be?

I'm just setting up a new Mac Mini (5,3) Server but I can't find 'Workgroup Manager' installed, only the 'Server' app. Is this the difference between the Mac Mini and a 'real' server?Â
The server app seems to do most things but I want to create all the user accounts with a pre set password but force each user to create their own password on first login, I can't seem to find this option in the 'Server' app. I can do this in Workgroup Manager on my old 10.4 server that's being replaced.Â

I'm trying to setup our xserve so our clients will authenticate against AD but have their prefs managed by OSX Server. So far I've got the clients logging on ok,group folders mount nicely and I can see AD users and groups from workgroup manager. But when I try to add a home directory for an AD user I get - 'Got unexpected error Error of type -14140 on line 1127 of PMMUGMainView.mm'. I get the same if I try to create a new active directory user so it looks like workgroup manager is having problems writing to the active directory.

Today when we started trying to add users to our server (we use it only for afp access at this time), we noticed that new users belonging to a group "storage" were unable to login from client machines via afp (clients both 10.7.2 and 10.6.8). Â
When we tried editing the users accounts to change which groups they belonged to, it would appear in workgroup (and server preferences) that the changes would take but there was still no access.Â
As a test case, we modified an existing user who had no issues logging in to belong to a diffenent group and have different sharepoint access. The changes looked good in workgroup and server prefs, but when the user logged in, he was only able to acces his old sharepoint and not the new one (and since his permissions to the old were removed, he shouldn't have access to that sharepoint).Â
Also, for some reason users cannot be deleted within workgroup manager any more. The login used was the diradmin account.

I recently tried to watch videos at The Escapist and was unable to. This has been happening since about Friday last week. I also have found that I am unable to play some flash games. I also found that I can't watch videos at Veoh. I tried to adjust my preferences in the Flash Global Settings Manager to accept third party cookies so that I can do these things. It isn't working. The boxes won't check. Is anybody else having this problem? If so what did you do about it? This problem only occurs on my MacBook. I am still able to do these things on a Windows xp desktop I have in the same house.

I have a MBA rev.B base model, it is a lovely machine.
Its operating temperature was alright (certainly much cooler than the rev.A)
~43C from cold start, and working at ~70C with Acrobat9 Pro, OutlinerPro, Fx3, Word, Mail + WiFi (802.11g)
~77C + max spin fan with YouTube video
But as my interest lies in maximum battery endurance, my focus quickly turn towards the spinning fans.
(My concept was, slower spin = longer battery life)
Having heard the general comments of AAPL's thermal paste,
I bought a tube of AS5 and did this quite a few months ago.
The temp now:
37~39C from cold start
~57C with all the aforementioned apps running, or watching YouTube video
and, as expected, lengthened battery life
(I have also installed smcFanCtrl a few weeks later and locked the fan @1800rpm)
Hopefully this is just another thread that get you MBA users actively thinking about re-applying thermal paste ahead of summer

There are alot of videos on youtube about how to do it, but what does it actually do? All I know is that it makes your computer run cooler, but it must do something thing else right?
I am thinking of doing it myself, I think I can open up my computer without voiding the warranty, could apple tell if I did it myself? And in the videos they all use alcohol to remove it! Isn't that bad for the motherboard and such?

I manage a host of e-mail accounts, and I have times when I use the same signature for different business accounts. I'm looking for an easy way to take all of my signatures and apply them to all of my e-mail accounts. Is there a simple way of doing that or do I need to take each signature and individually drag it to each e-mail address?Â

Anyone else have this happen to them - i.e. their preferred sound volume setting was not saved after 10.6.2 was installed? It's not a problem per se, because sound output still works normally, and the volume can easily be changed back, but still... it strikes me as odd.

I used to use ResEdit back int he day - and have used various tools on Mac and Windows to change icons. BUt I am stuggling with a default custom icon option for Mac OS X. Â I have a set of farily simply icons for use with a number of file types that I use a lot - csv, psl, pti, tp3, xml, cfr, and others and I would like to always have newly created files get the custom icon. Â
Ideally this would be based on the extension - and they are not all from the same app. Â I am not afraid to use the terminal or edit package contents. Although some of them are windows apps - and I already have a custom set in the virtual machine. Â Some of the solutions I have seen out there such as Candy Bar seem to be only for application and folder settings. Â In a couple cases - such as the .cfr and .pti - the apps do not have an open method where you can double click on the file and have it open - so I woudl be okay with something like reprogramming TextEdit to have the necessary icons and plist updates. Although when I tried to edit the plist file in TextEdit - all I did was render TextEdit unusable. Â
when I create 30 to 40 files ( a group of 5 differnet file types for each option ) to have icons that help me determine which ones I need to run a macro against - and which to send the customer - and which to upload to the vendor - etc. Â Also missing the colorful icons in the sidebar and iTunes - as well an Unsanity Haxies?

All of my email accounts are IMAP accounts. It seems like Mail won't automatically apply rules to new messages that appear in the inbox, if those messages were previously read on another device. It seems like Mail will only apply inbox rules to a new message if it comes in as "unread". For example, if I was reading some email messages in my iPhone's inbox, and then I come home and turn on my Mac and launch Mail, all of those messages show up for the VERY FIRST TIME in Mail's inbox. But none of the rules are applied to those messages, because I've previously read them somewhere else. This seems to be either a bug in Mail, or a poor design choice in Mail. Is there any way to FORCE Mail to apply rules to all incoming messages that appear in the inbox, regardless of whether or not they were previously read on another device?Â

I recently purchased a 15" MBP which is replacing an old PB G4. I used the PB at home and at the office and it performed brilliantly. I thought the transition to the new MBP would be seamless and it has been, save for one major issue. I cannot connect to my office server. In the past I simply brought my PB in, connected the ethernet cable in, clicked on "Network" and my office servers would appear in the Finder. When I tried the same thing with the MBP, I clicked on (my name)'s MacBook Pro>Network only to see a small icon of an Airport Extreme Base.
When I clicked on this it pointed me back to my HDD at my home which is plugged into the AEBS. That's all well and good and I love the ability to read my HDD at home from my desk at work but that's all that clicking on "Network" makes available to me. I have tried manually connecting though Finder>Connect to Server>Browse to no avail. Has Leopard made this so simple that I am overlooking a simple step or is it so complicated now that I need to bring in the IT professionals?

I've read is related to 10.4 or before and it appears there's some differences in menu options so I'm not putting two-and-two together. Just bought myself a new unibody macbook for x-mas. So the deal is I'm having trouble getting it to see and recognize my windows workgroup home network. I see tips on enabling windows networking or smb or other stuff but i can't seem to find those options in 10.5.5 (now updated to 10.5.6). If there's a manual or reference document specific to 10.5.5/.6 that's available.

i have a machine in a workgroup called 21. the machine name is icey.i have a domain called avery. i am able to access files on the domain from icey but when i try to connect to a printer it says i dont have sufficient access. the printer in question is a resource on a machine called marble. and the printer itself is called new_printer and yes its being shared. actually i cannot connect to any printers on the domain from icey.
everyone on the domain can access the all printers however no one from 21 can connect to it. it was necessary for me to build 21 but it is still important for 21 to be able to use avery resources. is there any way i can get this to connect?

I used to have my Contacts on iCloud and On My Mac local. After I made some changes with some Mail accounts, I lost the On My Mac local contacts, but the iCloud contacts are there. I like to keep the local copy. Contact Preferences shows an On My Mac Local account but not on the contacts list. I seem to remember there is a trick to get the On My Mac local account to show in the contact window and then contacts can be copied from the iCloud list.

If someone installs a spy-program locally on a computer, how would you go about finding it and/or rectifying the situation? A friend has reason to believe that someone installed software on their OS X computer to gather information. They may or may not have had the password, and she thinks they got on locally. How would she go about finding any such programs installed? She is reluctant to to a clean install (the only suggestion that I could think of).

I've got a private law practice for which I use an iCloud account. My message count now puts me close to the 10,000 mark and I'd like to substantially reduce the footprint of my inbox without actually deleting the older messages by saving them locally?Â
Does anyone know of a native-to-Mac-OS-X way to accomplish this? Or perhaps a trustworthy App?Â

I want to connect to a windows box which has sharing enabled. I was doing this yesterday and it was fine. Today, Mavericks has thrown in the towel and decided to think different. What I normally do is CMD-K and connect to the server. I'll type it in - smb://tardproof - but it can't do it.So I'll try connecting to it by it's known, fixed IP address - smb://192.168.0.107 - and ...
Since the mac clearly thinks it *can* see it on the network, otherwise why would it be listing it in the finders' "Shared" area? I mean, that's an automatic thing and not something you can command-drag out like normal locations..Maybe it's SMB playing up. I know, I'll connect forcing SMB1, since I know Mavericks now defaults to v2. No, wait, the message has changed. "Access the volumes and files locally."
so ok, there's definately nothing there in /Volumes, but I know I can ping it. Let's have a look from the other end - can Windows see my mac? So we have a single direction smb system, in the exact opposite than I need. Â

- When he creates a new contact within Address Book, it disappears if he quits the application.
- When in Mail, using the "Add to contacts" feature switches to the Address Book, but does not create the contact.
- Contacts created on iCloud.com successfully download and appear on the Mac.
- Attempts to create a contact on the Mac never appear on iCloud.com.
- I tried logging out of iCloud and/or disabling the account, but the issue seems to be local.
- I tried deleting his AddressBook.plist preference file with no effect.Â
He is using a Macbook Air with OS X Yosemite up to date. He first got his Mac with Mavericks (I think) and was never able to use Contacts on his Mac because of this issue.
