OS X :: After Clean Installs - Premium Application Can Be Restored

Sep 2, 2009

If I were to do a clean install of snow leopard, would I later be able to bring my applications over via time machine. That being said, I currently have Adobe CS4 Design Premium and Microsoft office 2008 and itunes. Would I have to unlicense the programs and deauthorize my account before the clean install to make sure that i wouldn't lose the licenses and the authorizations.

OS X :: Clean Installs On Machines Every Year - Common Practice

I read on another forum that some people seem to do a clean install of Mac OS on their machines every year or so, whether they need it or not. I'd never heard of this before and thought that I'd ask here to see if this is common practice?

MacBook Pro :: Clean Installs Or Just Migrate Data To Avoid Kernel Panics

Jan 9, 2011

I have a 15 inch 2010 MBP. When I got it, I migrated all my info from my previous MB. About 4-5 months into using it I started having issues w/ Kernel Panics. I did upgrade the HDD and RAM but the Kernel Panics happened before all of that. I took it to the Apple store and they ran some test on the hardware and software and said they couldn't find anything. Their advice was to just do a clean install. I wanted to avoid doing a clean install on all costs. Anyhow, I said what the who last night and backed up important files and did the clean install,

I have to say that the computer feels much more stable now. I was having a lot of little issues w/ Snow Leopard prior to the clean install. Most of that probably comes w/ me playing around w/ settings a bit too much. Also, I'll admit, I do torrent some software. In my opinion, thats what caused the kernel panics. Only time will tell if I continue to get kernel panics even after a clean install, but I think I'm good to go. So, do you guys prefer doing clean installs or just migrating your data? When Lion comes out, will you clean install or migrate to it?

MacBook Pro :: After Clean Install Snow Leopard, Can't Install Bundled Application (ilife)?

Apr 2, 2012

This is the first time i reinstalled(clean install) my snow leopard on my MBP. All went fine but then i inserted the disc for bundled application (which contains the ilife apps) but it keeps failing.

It says that "the installation failed. the installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. contact the software manufacturer for assistance".

I've also done my research on this matter. I've gone thru a few steps i tried as below without success:

1)normal install - fail

2)repair permission - fail

3)install in safe mode - fail

4) install using another admin acc - fail

5) made an image out of the disc and install - fail

6) used a similar disc(my dad's since we have identical version) - fai

7)updated my system and install - fail

8) reinstall the mac - fail

i cant think of any other solution as im a bit noob when it comes to mac. is there any other things i could try before taking it Apple?

Applications :: Multiple Installs Of CS4 Possible Using Same Serial Key

May 31, 2009

I was thinking of buying adobe cs4 suit student edition (web premium) but I have two machines. An iMac and macbook. I can only presume that adobes terms and conditions say that you can only install it on one machine. but that is there to most probably stop people giving it to others to install. I am the only one thats going to ever use it. So my questions is can it be install more than once using the same serial key? if yes do you know how many times can you activate the serial key.

Software :: Flip4Mac WMV 2.3.0.14 Updater Installs SliverLight

Oct 29, 2009

The automatic Flip4Mac updater will install Microsoft's SIlverLight browser plugin automatically unless the user does a custom install. It was even going to install it on my 10.6.1 machine although the MS web site claims that SilverLight is tested through 10.5. I have contacted the Flip4Mac support people since I believe this is Malware behavior.

Most Mac users will be unaware of what SilverLight is and how it will effect their machine. Nor will most experts think to check for/remove it when troubleshooting. If you wish to make your concerns known, contact their desktop support group, and include "Support Case 1-74223" in the subject line.

OS X :: Not Everything Restored From Migration From TM Backup?

Oct 27, 2009

Last night I wiped my drive and reinstalled Snow Leopard, then used the Migration Utility to restore my stuff from a Time Machine backup (which had been backing up from the Mac over the network). I could not use the wizard that came up after the first-run video because it a) did not detect the TM drive over the network, presumably because I need to mount it and could not until I was logged in, and b) did not detect the backup when I plugged in the drive via USB. I had to skip the first-run wizard, create a test account, plug in the drive, and use the Migration Utility to restore my files and settings (I don't remember if I had to mount the SparseImage for the backup to be detected).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Software Update On A Restored Mac?

May 22, 2012

Last week I had a major problem with my macbook pro 13" that required that the Genius bar give me a new hard disk.  Fortunately I had just backed up everything with Time machine (even though the reinstallation did *not* go according to what was supposed to happen.  The backup was on a USB hard disk, but when I plugged it in during the beginning of reinstallation, Lion didn't show it on the list of disks.  I finally installed Lion without it, set up a temporary new id, but Migration assistant didn't see it either!  Finally I was able to double click on the sparsebundle on the disk, and then use that to restore.  This procedure definitely needs work!).  I was able to restore everything to the mac with the new disk (and newly reinstalled Lion).  For the most part everything appears to be working ok, but I noticed, yesterday, that the App Store said that I had two updates waiting -- for iPhoto (which I use) and Garage Band (which I don't).  However, when I tried to install the updates it came back saying that they couldn't be installed on this computer, and to use Software update instead.  I did that, but it says that I have no updates waiting.  The verion of iPhoto in 9.2.1 and the new version is 9.2.2 so there certainly *are* updates waiting.

OS X :: Migration With Time Machine Only Restored System Apps?

Nov 25, 2009

I had some computer issues the other day that ended up requiring an erase/install of 10.5. So I reinstalled and when asked if I wanted to transfer data told it to use a Time Machine backup. I then ran Software Update to get all the updates. What I noticed was in my Applications folder only the standard set of Apple apps were there. No iLife apps, Adobe CS, etc were migrated over. I'm in the process of testing copying iPhoto from the backup. Is there a reason non-Apple apps are excluded from migration? I understand some installers, Adobe in particular, places files elsewhere in the system that might not be migrated properly. Also my Downloads folder is non-existent too and will need use TM again on it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Restored Wrong Data

Mar 25, 2012

OK - the history here is the previous Macbook was replaced because of system problems, including many files with FUTURE dates (eg. 2037). Apple store agreed after repeated issues, they would replace the machine. We did a final time machine/capsule backup before taking it in.

Got the new Macbook and ran the Migration assistant to restore all data from the time capsule. The data was not correct, and I suspect it was something to do with the future dates.

I can open the sparse bundle backup file and see the correct backup information, but I have no option when I open Time Machine to pick ANY previous backups. This all started with Macbook problem, and I'm really thinking they should figure this out - but assuming they wont, how to safely get the 'real' information recovered from Time Capsule.

PS - OS X Lion on both systems - Macbook Pro 15" i7, 750GB

Intel Mac :: Cannot Locate Restored Files On Hard Drive

My hard drive failed on my iMac (Intel), Apple Store replaced the hard drive, brought it home, hooked up the Time Machine, selected a backup date, restore. It showed the content loading for 4 hours. Once complete, the iMac still looks nothing like the old. Open the Macintosh HD and Info shows that the 230 GB transferred, but I can't find the folders anywhere. When actually opening the Macintosh HD, its only new folders and the new setup. Where do I find the restored content?

MacBook Air :: MBP To A Premium Ultraportable Battery?

Jul 8, 2009

I feel like the MBP to be a premium ultraportable should keep the same 5.0 hour rated battery. I would assume this can improve over time, but it is unrealistic to say it should be 7+ like everything else. Secondly, I think 4GB of RAM is feasible/necessary for the next revision. Lastly, I would really, really, really like to see 1 1440x900 res screen. If there is one thing I love about the X300/301 is the added screen space thanks to the higher res. I would much rather have a MBA as my portable since I have a MacPro for my power stuff, but I look at the price of the MBP 13 and then see the Refurb 15 at basically the same price (by using Edu Discount) and I just feel so stupid not taking the 15 at that point. Granted, it is always best to buy what you need regardless of price, but having had a 13" and a 15" before, the extra pound wont kill me. If I were not in the market for a portable laptop, I would gladly wait for a MBA with 4GB of Ram though. Oh well.

Mac Pro :: Windows 7 Home Premium CPU Limitation

Oct 31, 2009

Just for testing purposes, I installed a spare drive and put Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my Mac Pro 1.1 last night. All of the advice given here on MacRumors so as to install the 64-bit version and get the AHCI working properly went flawlessly with one exception: Boot Camp doesn't like to restart in OSX from Windows after the AHCI patch. But the big issue is: Windows 7 Home Premium continues Microsoft's policy of not supporting multiple processors on any "Home" variant of Windows. (XP, Vista, 7). Task Manager reports only the two cores of the first CPU and ignores the second. To me this isn't important as I intend to continue using XP Pro for my rare ventures into Windows but is important for Mac Pro users considering purchasing Windows 7. If you wish to use Windows effectively on a multi-CPU Mac Pro, you must obtain the "Professional" or "Ultimate" versions.

OS X :: Leopard Install Disc In And Restored To Time Machine Volume?

Sep 2, 2009

I use a lot of plug ins for music production in Logic. Like an idiot, i upgraded to snow leopard, after having this problem with the upgrade to leopard from tiger. Of course half of my plug ins dont work.So i Time Machine backed up everything on my HD. I put my old leopard install disc in and restored to my Time Machine volume. It took about 2 and a half hours.

At the end of that, it asks you to restart, and i do and as soon as the apple pops up on the off-white screen, kernel panic and i have to restart. this is never ending
Ive tried repairing and verifying disk permissions from the leopard disc of my HD and still nothing. My final guess would be to just do a clean install of Leopard and then restore from time machine again. This seems SUPER risky to me as there are TONS of important project session files that i CANT afford to lose.Everything is backed up on my Time Machine drive, im still just a little nervous about doing this.Anyone have any other ideas and does this sound like a secure plan?
