OS X :: Admin Privileges Gone Along With Half Of Stuff

Jan 13, 2010

First, here is the spec of my machine.
Hardware Overview:
Model Name:Mac Pro
Model Identifier:MacPro1,1
Processor Name:Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed:2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors:2
Total Number Of Cores:4
L2 Cache (per processor):4 MB
Memory:4 GB
Bus Speed:1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version:MP11.005D.B00
SMC Version (system):1.7f10
Serial Number (system):CK7480180GP
Hardware UUID:00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F20F877E

I have three drives on my computer. I bought Fusion 3 to install on drive No 3 because I need windows based music and sound studio programs that I already own. All 3 drives had a working OS X system which I thought was Leopard. Fusion 3 would not load and said that the drive needed OS X. Since the drive already had a working system on it I assumed that it Fusion 3 wanted Snow Leopard, so I loaded it. This is the result:- It loaded reloaded Snow Leopard onto all three drive in spite of me selecting drive 3.

Lost:-
All iPhoto picture on every drive.
All itunes recordings, (mostly home studio personal stuff) on every drive
All address book info on every drive
Most non Apple software such as Photoshop, all (replaceable by using the original disc) on every drive
All settings, background, dashboard, Mail etc.
All administration privileges, and I mean ALL, the clocks are 8 hours out and I don't have enough admin power to change the time.
iWork 8, specifically 'Pages', which I can't reload because of the admin problem so I can't save a document of any description.

I will have to wipe and start again, but I can't wipe (admin). I have tried resetting permissions but I am not allowed to unlock the little lock! Can I wipe the discs in a Windows based computer and then put them back in the Mac for reformatting? I have a tetrabyte of external drive that still works fine with most of my pictures backed up there after an iPhoto glitch which wiped the lot. I have found a folder called images which contains a lot but not all my lost pics (which I have backed up anyway) but it has pictures that I deleted 2/3 years ago, and all pictures are duplicated from three to five times in varying resolutions.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Terminal Command To Give Admin User Privileges In Finder?

Jun 29, 2012

Someone gave me a terminal command that allowed my OS X Admin user permission to make an application alias without having to enter my user password. I've since forgotten the command and wish to use it for a new admin user since my old admin has gremlins on a number of apps but new users are not troubled in same way. I can't beleive Apple would default to requiring a password to make/edit an alias but there you go the distrurbing trend towards their total control of my desktop advances… not to mention User SysPrefs leaking over from another user for keyboard shortcuts and sounds?

Intel Mac :: Left Half Of The Screen Would Flick And Become Darker Than The Lower Half?

Jun 21, 2012

At the beginning of last year I bought a 3.2GHz 27" iMac. About a month ago I noticed that, within about 5 minutes of starting my computer back up from sleep the left half of the screen would flick and become darker than the lower half (about 4 clicks of the light button lower). Sometimes the screen will flick to become even darker than this (but usually it returns to the 4 clicks darker after a short while), and sometimes it returns to normal only to go darker again.

MacBook Pro :: Bottom Half Of My Screen Go Black And Most Of The Top Half Flicker?

Jun 23, 2010

I have a MacBook Pro with the 9600gt in it. Since updating to 10.6.4 this morning 2 times while playing java games i've had the bottom half of my screen go black and most of the top half flicker. I've had to hold in the power button and reset both times. The second time I closed the screen and reopened it, the screen was black but no mouse and nothing moved.

Any advice? Would this be something to do with my graphics card or possibly some error in 10.6.4?Edit:: This is software related to 10.6.4 update and only happens when I open up a java game in a browser.

OS X :: Wants To Leave Stuff On To Upload Or Download Stuff?

Mar 4, 2009

Is it bad for Macs to leave them on a long time when you're not using it?

My nephew once told me he puts his PC off when he goes to school for example, because it would be better for his pc.

Does this count for...
- My PowerBook, running on cable (not battery, whatever)?
- My (to buy) 24'' iMac?

Reason is I sometimes want to leave my stuff on to upload or download stuff...

So is there anyway to go back to change this?I have tried restarting and completely shutting down the comp, and taking admin rights off and putting them back on.

OS X :: How Do I Delete Main Admin And Replace With 2nd Admin

Dec 15, 2009

Im running 10.6.2

I just used migration assistant to transfer to my new macbook pro. When i was doing this i needed to set up a new account/user as the one already on my new macbook pro is named the same as the one i was migrating from. With me?

What i want to do is delete the ORIGINAL account and be left with the new one, i migrated over, as the sole account (bar guest account and whatever else is usually there).

I can't seem to see any option for deleting the original account, the minus option is faded out when i highlight the Original account in "Accounts" in the System Pref. window.

Intel Mac :: Cannot Change Admin User To Standard User (2 Admin Accounts)

Mar 6, 2012

When I purchased my iMac a few years ago, I created one user account and just started using my computer.  I am trying to implement a few Safe Computing practices by creating a new Admin user account and changing my original user account to a Standard user.

For some reason, I cannot change either of the accounts to a standard user after I type in the password.  I've logged in as both and tried to change the other user profile to a standard user, but the checkbox is greyed out on both of the Admin User accounts.

I can create a new standard user, but I have everyting set the way I like it on my current Admin user account.  It would be much easier to have a new Admin User account and "Downgrade" my original Admin account to a standard user account.

why the option to change from an Admin user to a standard user would be "Greyed Out"?  The support articles walk me through, what should be a few simple steps, but I can not change the settings because the checkbox is greyed out.

I have been trying to get the DVD player to read multi regional DVD and had a forum member PM me instructions on how to do this, I am working on these instructions and while trying to perform on of the tasts I keep getting this error message. The document "SystemVersion.plist could not be saved. You do not have the appropriate access privileges? How do I get them? I am the owner of the computer so I should be able to get them?

OS X :: Leopard Administrator Privileges Gone

Oct 27, 2007

After upgrading (and having the install fail once, and then have the new mac version of blue screen of death) I have now noticed that the admin privileges on my account are now gone.I cant authenticate anything and my account is listed as "Standard" in the preferences pane.I came home from Florida last night and left the install disc in my dorm. Any way to do this without using the Password Reset on the dvd? Regardless, I dont think it would help, since there isnt even an admin account listed.

I am using administrator account, also went into file info and changed permissions to read&write and still get that message. Am I missing something here or is ti something else? I used to be able to do that when used Tiger, with different files though.

OS X :: Appropriate Access Privileges For Downloads

Jun 7, 2009

I am the administrator on this computer, and every time I try downloading something from Software Updates it tells me I don't have appropriate access privileges. It didn't used to happen, and I've gotten by fine this year because I haven't had to download anything urgently. Now, I really need to download Mac OS X Update Combined 10.5.7, but it says "you do not have appropriate access privileges".

Also, although it tells me that I can try again by finding the installer package in the finder, the package does not exist on my computer. I've gone to system preferences, the only user checked to administer is me, and I don't see any other option that could fix the problem..

OS X :: Desktop And Privileges Vanished?

Sep 12, 2009

I have an iMac with 10.4.11 on it that I've been using since 2006. Everything has been fine and dandy until earlier today when I decided to restart my computer after trying to get Adobe to work, and when I logged back in, my desktop background and all my icons were missing...it was as if I had turned my computer on for the first time.

Now all the files are still on the computer, I just can't access them. Anytime I try to click on "Documents" or certain other folders, I get a message saying I can't access them because I don't have "sufficient access privileges". I tried checking my account in the system preferences, but I am still listed as admin and am the only user anyway. I also tried repairing disk permissions under the Disk Utility tool, then restarting after that and I'm still having the same problem.

I have just bought a new macbook and am very pleased with it. I am having a problem with iTunes. I have two accounts on my computer (mine and the wifes). I have an iTunes folder in my public folder which is accessed by both accounts. My wife has subscribed to some podcasts which have been placed in the folder and are visible to her account, and download onto her iphone. When I subscribe to a podcast on my account it attempts to download and then states: 'You do not have enough access privileges for this operation.' I have amended the access privileges for the folder to shared and read / write for both accounts.

I sent in my comp to apple they replaced the hard drive to my surprise; I created a brand new user account without reloading any info off time machine. Then once that account was created I opened the migration assistant utility and restored certain information off of time machine. I then deleted the 'new' account. Now I'm on the restored account and I do not have access to particular folders on the macintosh hd. in time machine I am blocked from accessing them as well. I googled a lot and some say its a MAC address, but I'm not so sure that's the case for my particular situation. Lot of important files are locked up that I need to access asap!
