OS X :: Ad Hoc Network Wiped Out Regular Network Connection?

Jan 7, 2011

I've searched and don't see anybody else with this problem. I tried to set up an ad hoc network on my MBP so I could use TouchAble with my new iPad. But now I can't get my MBP (or iPad) to see my home wifi network.

(TouchAble is a music performance app on the iPad that controls Ableton Live on the MBP. It works on an ad hoc network so the combo will work on gigs without depending on local wifi.)

I set up a new network ok, with a password. The iPad saw it, but before I tested it further I wanted to make sure I could reinstate my regular network. So I tried switching back to the regular wifi. No dice! The MBP sees the network, but I can't log in. It acts like the password is wrong. Same on the iPad.

Yes, the network works. I didn't make changes to the settings in my router, and my iPhone still sees it with the same password.

I tried a tip I found online and deleted the network preferences file (com.apple.smb.server.plist) and rebooting. No dice. (The system didn't write a new one, as I had expected; I had to reinstate it from the Trash). I rebooted a few times, both MBP and iPad. Nope.

What's going on here? 1) How can I get my MBP to see my network, so I can switch back and forth from the ad hoc to the local network. 2) Ditto for the iPad.

MBP is new. All systems and versions are up to date. No other funny stuff with the network--it's been stable for two years. Everything is stand-alone; this is in my home office. I'm the admin. (But I'm not a techie, so if you start talking about IP addresses and subnet masks, please be clear what I should try.)

MacBook :: Unable To Share Network Connection / Connected Via Ad-hoc Network?

Dec 31, 2010

I have Alltel Mobile Broadband. Up until the other day, it's been working fine. I'd set up a network on my macbook after connecting to the Alltel network, then I'd enable internet sharing. Then my iPod Touch, iPad, etc would all be able to go online.

The past couple days, however, the connection just won't share.Anyone have any idea what could be doing this and how to fix it?

MacBook Pro :: "Network Connection The Communication Device Selected For Your Connection Does Not Exist?

Mar 16, 2012

The internal modem in my PowerBook Pro (mid 2010) shows up as "not connected" in the Network pane of system preferences, but I can't figure out how to get it to connect. When I enter my phone number and click the connect button, I get an error message: "Network Connection The communication device selected for your connection does not exist. Verify your settings and try reconnecting." Say what? It says it exists in the System Preferences, shows it in the list on the left. How can it not exist?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Force System To Use Second Connection Of Network Connection List For Internet Access?

OS X :: Network At Home For Internet Connection

Sep 10, 2010

I am going to move into a new house soon. I am looking to network the house, so I can use the internet anywhere, share movies, etc. This is my current setup at my apartment.
1 x Mac Mini connected to my TV in the lounge
1 x Apple TV connected to the TV in the bedroom
1 x Main PC in the study room (which all my movies/tv series/music/etc... is stored)
2 x Laptops
1 x Apple 20" Cinema Display

The mac mini is connected via ethernet to the router & the apple tv is connected via WiFi. Its currently a small place so the apple tv can access the router's wireless signal. This is what I have in mind for our new house which kinda big in size. Trash the PC and buy a mac mini server and external NAS storage. The NAS storage will store all the movies/tv series/mp3's/etc. I currently have a ubiquity nanostation2 which I can setup to boost the wireless signal throughout the house so we can use wireless anywhere in the house & tv mac mini, laptops & apple tv can access the wireless (so i do not have to install ethernet cables throughout the house). Also in the future, I would want to install security cameras outside the house (still trying to find a good mac OS X security camera software). Before I buy the mac mini server & NAS, am i missing anything or is there another better solution?

OS X :: Connection Failed When Accessing MPB Over Network

Jan 30, 2008

I'm working on a friend's MPB and when ever I try to connect to it from mine (I created the network from my MPB which is almost identical to his), His MPB shows up in finder, but it always says "Connecting..." and then "Connection Failed". Sharing is enabled on his MPB and the firewall is disabled. I have been through everything that I can think of to try and fix this, short of re-installing Leopard. His MBP came with Leopard pre-installed, so there is no need to worry about the upgrade messing things up. I have checked from a MacBook and that one cannot connect either, but both connect to mine with no problems.

OS X :: Losing Wireless Network Connection

Jul 12, 2009

I am running into a headache with my wireless network connections. When I close my laptop to put it to sleep, I often lose my network connection. It is easy enough to reconnect; I simply try to connect to a web page, get network diagnostics, and re-enter my password (and click on the "remember password" box). All works great -- until I next close the laptop. It happens all the time at one site, sometimes at home (using Time Capsule), and seldom at the church where I volunteer.

I have checked all my settings and can't figure out what's going on. If my poor memory is correct, I didn't use to have this problem, but it has been going on for the last couple of months. I know I could keep the sucker open, but I want to save power by putting it to sleep -- and the desk where I work at home has a sliding drawer so it has to be closed to close the drawer. (And my network connections are all in the desk also.) I've posted this question to the Apple forum but haven't gotten any replies there other than a couple of followup questions. I am using Time Capsule as my router and I have updated the software

Windows On Mac :: Network Connection Not Working With Xp Sp3 On Mp

Aug 2, 2009

So I have a mac pro, sick machine, love it, and want to play some older games, such as half life 2 as the mac port glitces and sucks for me.

So here's my endeavors with Boot camp. Ran the partition and inserted my windows disk.... a note on that. I did not have a xp with SP2 or better so I made one using a program and "slipstreamed" SP3 into it.

I then installed xp. Had a problem thou. When it wanted to start windows for the first time it rebooted and then never went anywhere but a blank screen. I rebooted it manually and it dumped me into windows just fine. No sound, and many other drivers missing. It did not ask me for my Leopard disk like many said it would. So I inserted it and it installed all the missing drivers for me.

However, the network connection did not work. everything else save my numpad seems to work. I have no idea where to start. I have done everything I do on my PC Laptop set up to run fine within windows and the router. I even installed Bootcamp 2.1 as a post said it might be a problem there. IT did say it must be installed prior to SP3 but thats not really possible with my system due to it (SP3) installed with windows prior to reading about the 2.1. I need to connect so I can download files I need to run the games I wish to with this thing, otherwise I wouln't bother.

But, now my laptop becomes totally unresponsive and unable to receive or initiate connections. After I came home, I tried the basics. DNS completely failed. Connections to my local network seemed to work OK (192.168.1.X). However, anything else was not possible. I tried running nslookup to see what was happening. [code] I tried using ifconfig to take the network interface down and then back up. I tried disabling and re-enabling wifi. About the only thing I've been able to do is reboot the machine.

OS X :: No Access For Network Connection For Guest Account

Mar 1, 2010

After creating a guest account I noticed that anyone uses that account can use my (remembered) secured network connection. Normally, in my network settings, remembering used networks option is checked. When I look into the keychain, I see two entries for my network name. One is in my logins section and the other is in the system section. I suppose, the guest uses the entry which is in the system section. If I delete the entry which is in system section, it is been created again on next connection.

If I do not want any guest to use my network connection, I am having to cancel the remembering used network option and select disconnect on logging out option in airport advanced settings. But; if do this, I am having to select my network and type its password every time I login. I simply want if a guest uses the Guest Account, he wouldn't able to use my network connection without entering the correct password. Is it possible?

OS X :: Leopard Internet Sharing Network But No Connection

Now, when I attempt to internet share from my ethernet to computers using airport, they are able to see the network, connect to it, and put in the password, but internet fails to connect. I'm on a college network, but this shouldn't really matter since I currently have a network of this type working perfectly on an iMac running Tiger. The signal reads at full strength and behaves just like it should, just it doesn't allow an internet connection. No firewall is on.

Applications :: VPN Connection Using Mac OS X's Built In Network Preferences?

Nov 11, 2008

For school, I need to set up a VPN connection to be able to connect my MacBook to the internet. While my school offers the Cisco VPN Client with a preconfigured PCF settings file, I would much rather use Mac OS X's built-in VPN capabilities, through the Network Preferences. Now, my problem is that I don't really know what to do to get this working. Using an online password decoder, I already found out what the password for my school's VPN connection is. But how do all the settings translate between the Cisco VPN Client and Mac OS X's VPN configuration screen?

The PCF file tells the Cisco VPN Client to use Group Authentication, with a group name and a group password (the one I already decrypted). These are already filled in. When starting a connection, I am then asked to fill in my student login details. Now, in the VPN settings screen in System Preferences, there is a box for Account Name. Am I right in thinking this is the box where I fill in my student ID? Or does the group name go here? Then, when I click Authentication Settings..., I can fill in a password. I assume this is where my student password goes? Or should I fill in the password I decrypted?.................

Hardware :: Will This Work To Speed Up Network Connection

Jan 5, 2009

I've been posting quite a bit lately as to suggestions as to how to speed up my network. Whatever I do, I cannot get to my iMac to connect to my network faster than 5-10 Mbits/sec. If I step 6 inches out of the room with the iMac, I get 70-100 Mbit/sec. I've finally come to the conclusion that there is some type of interference in the room with the iMac and no matter what I try, I'm not going to be able to get good wireless network speeds in that room.

Since the room is on a different level than my wireless router, a direct wired connection from my Time Capsule is out of the question. But, what if I bought an Airport Express, put it right outside the room with the iMac and ran an ethernet cable from the Airport Express directly into my iMac? Would that have any positive effect?

When I place my Mac Pro desktop (Early 2009) in the same spot and turn on the airport, it can barely connect to the same network (extremely weak signal) and it drops out constantly. I'm sharing my laptop connection to my desktop at the moment, but I'd rather not have my laptop on all the time. IMac :: Network Connection With Low Download Speed

Nov 7, 2009

I am a new Mac user. I bought a 27" iMac today to replace a dead PC. My download speeds are AWFUL on the Mac. While using the PC, my maximum download speed on a 6 mbit connection was over 850kb/sec. Now, with the mac, I can barely manage 250K/sec downloads. I am using all the same equipment and cables as before (not using the wireless, and I have it disabled), and if I plug in another PC into my router, it will get the 850+kb/sec download speeds, no problem at all. Is there a setting somewhere that I can change to get things working properly? Poor speeds occur no matter what program I am downloading from, whether it be Safari, FTP, or whatever. I just installed parallels, with windows, and I can download at my old speeds. How do I do it in native Mac mode then?

IMac :: Periodically Losing Network Connection?

Dec 21, 2009

Any else having a problem with periodically losing their network connection on their new iMac? Basically not working properly with your router?

I've narrowed the problem down to the router by connecting directly to the modem and using PPPoe, which works fine.

I had a dlink router which I thought was causing this. Whenever I would use the new iMac I would lose the internet periodically (on my whole network). It would take about 5 minutes to return.

I bought a new linksys router WRT120N to replace the dlink and the problems continue but the internet now only goes out long enough to disconnect my instant messengers and interrupt my streams. Just a little blip. I updated the firmware on the router which I thought worked (ran flawlessly for two days) but now the problem is back.

I'm just wondering if I'm the only one suffering from this or has it been happening to others. It's rather annoying.
