OS X :: 50GB TM Backup After Installing Fusion 3?
Nov 18, 2009
This afternoon I installed a few updates in addition to the the Fusion 3 trial.
HP Printer Driver Update iPhoto and Safari 4.0.4 updates
I keep all my VM's on an external drive, and my free space has only decreased a little (as expected with installing updates). I did not do anything to modify large files (such as renaming iTunes movies etc).
Is there anyway to figure out what Time Machine is doing so I can try and pin point what it's actually backing up? And has anyone had anything similar after installing those items? And, is there anyway of removing the last backup?

I know that i will be getting the "why do u need linux on mac" comments... I am just doing this for fun..and to play around with ubunto
I am trying to install the latest version of ubunto on VMWare Fusion. Fusion recognizes the DVD that I burned as the correct version of Ubunto and I continue until the machine boots up and I get this message:
"unable to find a medium containing a live file system"
I am using the VMWare Fusion 3. on white core 2 duo macbook, 2.4GHz, 4GB. running Mac OS X 10.6.1

I have the Windows 7 RC .iso (it's 64bit, I should have that one, right? Macs are 64 bit not 32 bit?) file and I want to install it through my VMware fusion app. Please note, this is NOT the beta for Windows 7, it's the newer RC.
How in the world do I do this? Some online guides say to set it as Windows Server 2008 x64, others say Windows Vista 64.
Could someone take me through the process of installing it? Or link me to a video or proven article? Setup goes through usually but the next time I boot into Windows 7 it tells me there was an installation error and Windows could not find the startup disk.

I have an iso file of Windows 7 Enterprise (32 bit) that I want to install on my Mac with VMware Fusion. I went through the steps and when I clicked install, it starts then this message pops up: "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now." I can click "Browse," "OK," or "Cancel".

I know with Boot Camp, you need to create a partition and install Windows on it. Is the same true with Fusion? Or during the install process, Fusion will create the space needed?

Alright, so I've installed Windows 7 RC on my iMac with Boot Camp. Booting straight into Win everything works fine (I had some issues trying to connect my Wireless Keyboard and Mouse, but it's fine now). I have 3 issues:
1. Firstly, is there any way for me to access my files stored on the Mac partition in Windows (e.g. Music, Videos etc.)? I tried using HFS+ Explorer but it I get stuck at the 'AutoDetect Partition' phase because it says "No HFS+ Partition found". Any ideas?
2. Now I've also got VMWare Fusion running on my Mac, and when I start it, it detects my Windows partition and so I load Windows through it. The OS loads up fine, but for some reason it doesn't detect my WiFi adapter and so the Internet in Windows doesn't work (it works fine via Boot Camp). Is this normal (since maybe the WiFi is already connected through OS X so won't work in Windows at the same time)?
3. Lastly, I've installed the VMWare Tools in Windows, and it seemed to go on without a problem, but for some reason my 'Unity' option doesn't work. The button is there, but when I click it the Win7 window disappears. I figured, OK, probably just loading or something, but nothing happens. The VMWare main screen still shows that Windows is 'Powered On'.

I have the edu version of Windows 7 64 bit home. I'm using Fusion 3 and am trying to install Windows 7 as a new machine. I'm running from the ISO Win 7 file that I dl'd from here, which is 5.43 gb in size.
When I start the new machine process, it begins the installation but then hangs with the following error message: A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step.

I'm running out of space on my 200GB HD, so i was looking for stuff i could remove to free up some space. When i used 'Disk Inventory X' it told me that iTunes was taking up 132GB when it says on my iTunes that the library has 78GB worth of music in it? So i was wondering what could be taking up the extra 50GB, its not duplicates within iTunes or that iTunes is making duplicates of each file opened into it as i regularly delete the contents of my Downloads folder (the place where itunes duplicates the music from)?

I have a large music library (over 500GB) and from what I've read it is not clear whether there is any way to use the iCloud match service for music libraries that large. The limit seems to be 50GB. Is there a way to use iCloud Match for really large libraries?

Before you ask, I had found some old games a few months ago that I wanted to play for nostalgia sake, so I made some Windows 95 and 98 virtual machines. It was pretty easy actually, since I just used Disk Utility to create images of the install discs. VMWare had a nice guide on their site that helped me get networking setup properly also.
But then I got to thinking, it'd be pretty fun to try and get Windows 3.1 up and running as well. I was able to make images of some MS-DOS 6.22 install disks and got that installed just fine. My problem actually comes when trying to install Windows itself. I was able to get the install files from 2 different sources. The first was just a folder of ALL the install files from 6 different disks, and the second was 7 different ZIP files from 7 different disks. I tried creating a single image from the first source, and 7 different images from the 7 unzipped folders from the second source, but on both attempts I'm unable to access the A: drive in DOS to start the setup. It gives me an error message about reading from the drive, followed by the standard "Abort, Retry, Fail?"
Has anybody else tried to get a Windows 3.1 virtual machine up and running and come across this problem? I even tried Googling for the exact lists of files contained on the 6 disks from my first source in order to try and split those up and make the necessary images, but unsuccessfully.

Can anyone suggest which SSD to choose :-
OCZ Vertex 2 50GB vs Corsair Performance 64GB ?
Right now I can get both for the same price.
I know the Corsair has the 128MB cache but could not dig up the cache for the OCZ.

When I boot Fusion with MacAffee I get a message that there is an updated version of Fusion is ready for download. When I go to the site I'm offered a choice of just Fusion or Fusion with MacAffee. Since the boot message only talks about Fusion should I do the only Fusion download. Or should I get the combined one?

I had a MacBook Pro which I had backed up with Time Machine. The MBP had the older version of iLife. I just bought an iMac and restored it with my TM backup. Then I installed the applications DVD that came with the iMac. It said the installation was successful, but it erased my iPhoto library. How do I get my library and data to transfer to the new iLife suite.

"it is possible to completely erase a hard drive and install Snow Leopard without a pre-existing operating system in place, enabling users to bypass the possible headaches of an upgrade and go with a clean install instead. Wired said many users upgrading from Tiger should probably consider backing up their files from Tiger and doing a clean install instead."
I don't have an external harddrive. What other backup options do I have?

I am getting the following error from Time Machine when doing my first backup. The startup disk being backed up, and the TM disk are both the same size.
Macintosh HD: 465.44 (total); 393.99 (free); 71.45 (free)
Time Machine: 465.44 (total); 465.29 (free)
The Time Machine error is: Quote:
"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 472.7 GB but only 465.3 GB are available." why would this be? Other disks are excluded from the backup, and Time Machine is telling me that it needs more space than it actually needs. What should I do?

I just finished up a fresh install of Windows 7 and downloaded and installed the NVidia driver from their site directly since the one in the Boot Camp files is pretty old and technically the Vista driver anyway.
But I still need the Brightness, Sound, etc key functionality. Is there a way to selectively install Boot Camp drivers? That's the only one I need. The wireless, chipset, video and everything else works just fine (and in some cases better) than the ones included in Apple's setup.

I need to run Internet Explorer. I have an old Windows box, but I'd prefer to run it from my Mac. I am having trouble understanding what I need to do. I have Fusion and a Windows install disk. What do I do next?
I've tried the Fusion web site, but there is no help there. My question is probably too basic.

I'll like to install Mac OS 10.4.6 in VMWare Fusion for stuff that I need to use 10.4 in. How might I do that? I've noticed they support 10.5 and 10.6 server but why not client? and why not 10.4 intel?
I have the install disks with me, if I need to make an iso or cdr of it, I know how.

I have recently set up Boot Camp on my new iMac. If I install VM Fusion and set it up from my Boot Camp partition, can I access files using either BC or Fusion?
For example, I plan on running Microsoft Money, sometimes I would use it in Boot Camp but other times I would use it on Fusion. Would I have to install the software twice and each time copy the money file over from one to the other? I'm hoping that everything on Windows would be identical on Fusion and BC but I don't know if it works that way.
I guess an easier way to ask the question, if I download an internet file onto the desktop in VM Fusion, would it show up on the desktop when I load up Boot Camp and vice versa?

I've been unable to find good information on the setup of a Win7 VM on my new 2010 MBP.
When running the VM (Fusion 3.1, running Win7 Home ed. 2GB RAM, no 3D, 1 CPU) on my 2010 MBP (Core i5, 4GB) I get quite a lot of beachballing in the OS X part, as well as general slowdown. Looks like there is very little RAM available (40MB free)
