MacBook :: Only Works In Safe Mode - Wipe Clean / Start Over?

May 7, 2012

My macbook (early 2008 model). Looks like my disk drive isn't working correctly; I put in a new hard drive. I went to reinstall Snow Leopard then upgrade to Lion. Ever since then my mac only seems to work in safe mode. I used my imac to load snow leopard (with firewire); and downloaded lion from app store. Is there a way to wipe clean and start over? There is nothing on the computer that I need. I keep all my important files on an external hard drive. My big concern is I don't know how to do it and second since I don't have a disk for lion will just going back to app store allow me to re-download or will I have to pay 30 bucks again.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Clean Wipe HDD And Restore

Jun 11, 2012

I was moving around some files from an old to a new macbook pro and I ended up deleting some files so now whenever I try to put a file on the desktop it says that I don't have permission to do that operation. I just got this macbook and cant access my old one at the moment, so the question is: how do I totally wipe the hdd and install osx lion again?

Is it possible to open my macbook in target mode and delete everything then when I start it up, open it in recovery/rescue mode and install lion again from the servers, or do I need to wait and get my macbook again? I just want to use it like a brand new machine (no personal data on it). I already tried reinstalling lion, but that did nothing.

As I know that there will still be things left even after I've cleared all of my documents.

OS X :: Does The Free Space Wipe Option Also Wipe The Slack Files On The Hard Drive

Dec 15, 2008

When using the Disk Utility free space wipe to wipe sensitive data (using the 7 times option), I thought that would be sufficient.

I was wondering though, does the free space wipe option also wipe the slack files on the hard drive? Is this even an issue for a Mac? (I know on Windows the slack file needs to be wiped for a completely secure erase, right?)

MacBook Pro :: Clean Up Hard Disk Through Erase & Install

Jun 25, 2012

I have a MacBook Pro which was originally supplied with OS X10.4.9. I have upgraded using disks purchased from the Apple store to 10.5 and subsequently 10.6. More recently I upgraded to 10.7 using the download from the online App Store. I would like to perform an Erase and Install to get rid of the 'dross' on my hard disk and may do this as part of the 10.8 upgrade although have yet decide whether to wait for this or not.

when doing the erase and install, do I have to start from scratch by loading the original 10.4.9 OS X version or can I start at 10.7. If the latter how would I do this given that I don't have a disk as it was downloaded from the App Store?

OS X :: Easier Way To Clean Startup Disk?

Dec 4, 2008

So I've been getting the "Your startup disk is almost full" warning notice pretty frequently for about a couple months now, and I just keep deleting files and applications. It's gotten to the point now that I have nothing else to do delete because I basically use most of the stuff I have on my computer, unless there is something I'm missing. I was thinking, there has to be an easier way to clean out your startup disk, I just don't know how.

Mac Pro :: Getting To A 'clean' Finder From Startup Disk?

May 1, 2012

I am having huge problems with new monitors holding a calibration. My tech at Lacie has recommended starting up from the startup disk with basically a 'clean' finder so we can determine if I am having a hardware or software issue that is causing the problem. I can find no way to do this however. Is there a way to do this other than installing the OS on an external hard drive and booting from that?
