View 6 Replies View RelatedI was moving around some files from an old to a new macbook pro and I ended up deleting some files so now whenever I try to put a file on the desktop it says that I don't have permission to do that operation. I just got this macbook and cant access my old one at the moment, so the question is: how do I totally wipe the hdd and install osx lion again?
Is it possible to open my macbook in target mode and delete everything then when I start it up, open it in recovery/rescue mode and install lion again from the servers, or do I need to wait and get my macbook again? I just want to use it like a brand new machine (no personal data on it). I already tried reinstalling lion, but that did nothing.

Is there anyway i can have a fresh install of snow leopard while still keeping my software so i dont have to install them again?

After seeing the system requirements for Windows 7, I decided to upgrade to a larger hard drive later this week. I plan on giving my old 160 gig drive to a friend who uses Windows but I want to wipe it clean first. Do I insert my Leopard disc and use disk utility to reformat?

I recently sold my older MBP and already backed up the system via Time Machine. However, I need to wipe clean the hard drive for the new user. Is there a clear cut way to restore the system? I do not have the boot drive with me as I am traveling but would like to know if there is a way without using the disk.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi have a macbook pro which i bought in late 2011. I was wondering how i should do a comeplete wipe of all my memory and reinstall lion. I have tried the recovery process but it just reintalls the os and leaves the rest of the data behind.

My macbook (early 2008 model). Looks like my disk drive isn't working correctly; I put in a new hard drive. I went to reinstall Snow Leopard then upgrade to Lion. Ever since then my mac only seems to work in safe mode. I used my imac to load snow leopard (with firewire); and downloaded lion from app store. Is there a way to wipe clean and start over? There is nothing on the computer that I need. I keep all my important files on an external hard drive. My big concern is I don't know how to do it and second since I don't have a disk for lion will just going back to app store allow me to re-download or will I have to pay 30 bucks again.

I have tried numerous times to restart the PC with the Leopard disc in my DVD drive and it comes up, after I press C upon reboot, but no matter what I try I cannot get the erase and install option to ever show up.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro which was originally supplied with OS X10.4.9. I have upgraded using disks purchased from the Apple store to 10.5 and subsequently 10.6. More recently I upgraded to 10.7 using the download from the online App Store. I would like to perform an Erase and Install to get rid of the 'dross' on my hard disk and may do this as part of the 10.8 upgrade although have yet decide whether to wait for this or not.Â
when doing the erase and install, do I have to start from scratch by loading the original 10.4.9 OS X version or can I start at 10.7. If the latter how would I do this given that I don't have a disk as it was downloaded from the App Store?

I would like to donate two eMacs, both in working order, to anyone willing to take them. One of them I have already erased and installed. Is it necessary to go this far? Does this limit my options in donating them? The second (unreformatted) eMac still has Tiger installed.

When using the Disk Utility free space wipe to wipe sensitive data (using the 7 times option), I thought that would be sufficient.
I was wondering though, does the free space wipe option also wipe the slack files on the hard drive? Is this even an issue for a Mac? (I know on Windows the slack file needs to be wiped for a completely secure erase, right?)
Today I tried to move two applications(safari and calculator) from the Finder to the desktop icon area. When I dragged them I accidentally stopped before I reached to workstation/application area and now both safari.app and Calculator.app are written on my desktop and I can move it, open it, or change it. What should I do to get rid of it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a system that can track about 50 MBP's providing both remote wipe as part of an overall security protocol, and also remote screen/desktop for admin purposes. I looked at preyproject.com but it looks like they only do remote wiping/tracking. that I don't want something locked to a single user, it should be centrally managed.Â

My problem is that I have a few documents and a few Programs on the desktop and I want them to go away - without deleting them.
And not to the, sidebar. What do I do, they're not just shortcuts. I tried removing a program that I already have in the sidebar to dissapear from the desktop but I was unsuccesfull. I also want the Hard Drive to go away without deleting it ofcourse
Are there any programs that a) cleans mt desktop putting files in certain places, and b) have it so that nothing ever get's on the desktop?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an application that WILL NOT DELETE! I move it to the trash it does nothing. It stays there. I took my iMac to the Apple store and they said I would need to wipe my computer clean... I am fine with that but I have some expensive programs... i.e. Photoshop Lightroom etc. how can I keep those programs but wipe everything else?
View 8 Replies View RelatedLike it would move anything immediately to the downloads folder. Would love to have something like this cause the wife has the desktop like whoa.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOn the App Store I saw an item CleanMyDesktop but folks complained it didn't get all file types. So I thought I'd try it with my modest Automator abilities: FIND, FILTER, MOVE TO FOLDER...BUT...but it only works if there are files of that type on the desktop, so if there happens to be no pics, the application stops right there, or if there are no docs, it stops there, etc.But if I put an item of each file type on the Desktop, sure enough it runs all the way to the conclusion. So how can I fix this? Tell it to move on even if there are no items of that type of MOVE. 'Cause right now it ain't good. I tried this to clean my Desktop and now I'm tossing junk all over the Desktop so the app can finish.

I just purchased a new iMac and I had to wipe the HDD and reinstall OSx because of an issue with the migration assistant. After I reinstalled OSx I noticed that I no longer had iPhoto installed. I went to the app store but there is no option to reinstall...OSx seems to think it is installed but it doesnt appear in finder!Â
