I've purchased my Mac book from a friend. It still has his name and password on which he cannot remember. Am i correct in assuming that if I restore it to the origianl factory settings then it will erase his settings. Also will i need anything erlse with the start up like serial numbers, auth codes etc?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy MB Air is not booting (I get the ever gray Apple logo screen with the spinning wheel, and nothing happens) Following instructions I found online, I tried the disk utility repair disk and permissions and, apparently, there's nothing wrong. Still, the system won't boot!Â
I'm now trying to reinstall Mac OS X Lion, but the system requires about 0.5 GB of additional free disk space to install!Â
Is there anyway I can access the OS terminal screen (command line interface), so I may delete a few files, creating additional disk space?Â

Early 2011 15" MBP with Lion (purchased new July 22, 2012). I had a two year old MBP running Snow Leopard then upgraded to Lion. The computer got flooded. I took out the hard drive and put it in a portable hard drive case and used it to restore my new MBP running Lion. It seemed to go very smooth and very easy. I am not a very knowledgable computer person, I use the computer for Photoshop, iTunes and email and just barely know not to turn it off with the on/off button! I keep noticing that I have two of many things in the computer, like library, multiple systems and multiple hard drives. I also get conflicting amounts of free hard drive space. I feel that I mistakenly copied too much stuff. I have backed up my files onto a fire wire hard drive. I want to "push a button" and have the computer go back to the way it was the day I bought it. This time, I will take the time and move the files and programs manually (there are not that many). I am affraid a typical restore from Time Machine will only bring back the problems I am trying to get away from.

Is there any way you can reset your MacBook Air to the original settings you first recieved it in? I've noticed I have way to much junk to go through and try to delete it all and when I try to delete something it does the poof thing it's supposed to, but later I notice it has not been deleted. I've tried restarting my computer, and completely turning it off for 24 hours then seeing it its gone, but it never deletes.

I have a 2007 Blackbook with Snow Leopard installed. I tried to install Bootcamp but it said that I had to do an erase + reinstall first. I booted my mac up from the OS X disc, got past the language menu, then got a pop up stating "MAC OS X Cannot Be Installed." I can't click on Disk Utility or anything else on the menu bar. How else can I erase my HD?

I kept the installation disk in the computer because iMac would not allow me to eject it. Plus I needed the installation disk in my computer to perform the erase in Disk Utility. did I erase the entire installation disk?

I'm selling my PowerMac, which was upgraded with an aftermarket CPU. I've decided to reinstall the original CPU and sell the PowerMac and upgrade separately.
I noticed that Apple didn't use thermal paste between the CPU and heat sink, and I was wondering if I should do the same or go and buy a tube of Arctic Silver.
I have got my first mac (imac) so sorry if this is a really simple question. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard but I am having bits of trouble with printing. As I have not yet got much data on my Mac I am thinking of going back to my original installation that came with the imac. I have backed up my data I want keep photos, music etc; onto DVD. When I put the installation disc in what is the best option to pick ? I do appreciate that I will have to re-install photoshop and other apps; I have installed. Will I have to re-configure my internet again? Basically I want to re-install the operating system I am also thinking of buying Superdupper any thoughts on this product.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded the internal disc in my MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I had a 320GB and put it a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB. I didn't have the install disc and used the restore option in disk utility to copy files to the new drive before inserting it. It now works, but it's slow to load-up. How do I reinstall my OS, to optimise it? I've lost my original install disc and have since upgraded to Lion 10.7.4Â BTW - my new drive also has some strange noises and I'd like to replace this with a new one ASAP.

I have this iMac, and now I mostly use my macbook pro. So what I want to do to this one is delete everything (of course I will back up what I need) and then reinstall Lion, so first it can be faster. And second imac run bootcamp on it so I can play some PC Games.
View 1 Replies View RelatedToday I took my MacBook to the apple store for an erase and reinstall due to about 20gb of space was missing on my HD. My latest backup was done the day before I went back to Apple to reinstall Lion. After I restored my data from the backup, the address book app and the app store app are both missing. My address book data is on iCloud so I'm not that concerned about the data but I would like to get the app back on my MacBook.Â

i know that diskutil has alot of commands and im not sure how to use them, i would specifically want to know how to use eraseDisk properly. Or is there any other way to clean install tiger without using darwin? I know eraseDisk gives me a format to use but i never get it right for some reason. diskutil eraseDisk "Journaled HFS+" MacintoshHD bootable /dev/disk0 -- this works i got it right now but it gives me this error: could not unmount disk for zeroing
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently did a complete erase of my hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. I chose to start clean rather than use any Time Machine back-ups. I used the same external hard drive for my new Time Machine back-ups. Now I cannot open any back-ups/items prior to the re-install via Time Machine. They are listed along the right hand sidebar in Time Machine (star wars view) but will not open when clicked on.Â
Some files I can access if I go to the actual backup folder - ex a Pages doc BUT ff I try to open the iPhoto library from the back-up folders stored on the external drive, I get the following error message -
I cannot open the iPhoto "package" to access individual photos from these back-ups.Â
So - how can I get Time Machine to allow access to the pre-install back-ups??Â

Running Leopard 10.5.7. Failing attempts to upgrade to SN. Other forums are saying "Use System Restore Disks" I don't have "System Restore Disks" I have 2 disks that came with the computer called "Mac OS X" not called "System Restore". Do I just pop Disk 1 of 2 in the CD/DVD and hold down C whilst rebooting?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to restore a Mac to its original settings as if it was store-bought where the person who buys it gets to enter their own info (name, address, etc), gets greeted with the welcome video, etc.? I tried Mroogle, but only suggestions I found was to drag stuff to Trash, which doesn't sound like what I'm trying to accomplish.
