i am trying to erase all content and or restore my mac lion to its original settings.. i just sold it, i have already copied my information on an external hard drive....idont know what i did wrong...have a locked screen, with a picture of a lock on it with a password box below it and an arrow next to it..

Am i correct in assuming that if I restore it to the origianl factory settings then it will erase his settings. Also will i need anything erlse with the start up like serial numbers, auth codes etc?
View 1 Replies View RelatedEarly 2011 15" MBP with Lion (purchased new July 22, 2012). I had a two year old MBP running Snow Leopard then upgraded to Lion. The computer got flooded. I took out the hard drive and put it in a portable hard drive case and used it to restore my new MBP running Lion. It seemed to go very smooth and very easy. I am not a very knowledgable computer person, I use the computer for Photoshop, iTunes and email and just barely know not to turn it off with the on/off button! I keep noticing that I have two of many things in the computer, like library, multiple systems and multiple hard drives. I also get conflicting amounts of free hard drive space. I feel that I mistakenly copied too much stuff. I have backed up my files onto a fire wire hard drive. I want to "push a button" and have the computer go back to the way it was the day I bought it. This time, I will take the time and move the files and programs manually (there are not that many). I am affraid a typical restore from Time Machine will only bring back the problems I am trying to get away from.

Other forums are saying "Use System Restore Disks" I don't have "System Restore Disks" I have 2 disks that came with the computer called "Mac OS X" not called "System Restore". My older MBP is running very slow, and I have tried all the usual ways of making it run quicker - repair permissions, repair disk from Lion recovery partition, remove extraneous files, checking Activity Monitor, etc. etc. Someone suggested reformatting the HD and then restoring from a backup. I have the HD cloned to an external HD with Super Duper, but if I reformat the internal HD and restore from the clone, won't the problems that caused the issue in the first place just be cloned into SD and then restored to the reformatted internal drive, thus defeating the excercise?

I'm not sure how this has happened, but my Mission Control has become mirrored from the default settings. The "X" that appears to close programs now shows up on the left hand side of each Desktop, and the pop-out desktop that I am supposed to click on to create a new desktop is now showing up on the left hand side of my screen instead of the right hand side of my screen. I had an Imac running Snow Leopard... I mistakenly(?) thought i could change Permissions by selecting "Everyone" from the startup volume HD icon's Permissions panel and in turn, chose "Apply to All Enclosed Files and Folders" option thinking this would allow all other computers on a small office network to have total free and clear no-security-required, file-sharing read/write- access to this Imac's contents. After doing this and attempting reboot, I couldn't get access to the OS at all even after i ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtilities, so, wound up doing Archive/Install - but used an OS 10.5 disk because i (mistakenly)thought that my 10.6 Snow Leopard disk was only an Updater. So after installing 10.5 again I ran the OS 10.63 disk's installer, bringing the new System Folder up to Snow Leopard. I'm up and running - most system software updates downloaded/done. Problem is now this -- stuff like: Email Clients, Itunes, Browsers, any Apps that had associated data/content files isn't recognizing the old, original contents that belonged to them - instead, these apps all

I just got an imac and love it so far. Have been a pc user (and still am) and have a western digital external drive with crazy info on it that I got running on my mac without having to format it to fat32.
Everything was working perfect up till last night and now I can't access any of the contents on the drive.
It seems that everything is there as the drive only shows 62GB of 500GB free but the folder is empty.
I tried to run a disk repair using disk utility on my mac but everything is grayed out. I also tried to run a disk check on my pc but windows cant seem to access the drive without wanting to format it first.
Ive had great fun over the past few weeks messing with Leopard and my new macbook, altering aqua scrollbars, adding quicklook plugins and altering folders/icons etc.
For the most part, ive kept backups just in case. Original folder icons etc all backed up.
However I got a little too keen and didnt back up application icons (original ones) Althougth Im happy with what I have now, I cant find anywhere any original icons.
If I restore my Mac HD will it erase all my files that are not backed up?

I've noticed I have way to much junk to go through and try to delete it all and when I try to delete something it does the poof thing it's supposed to, but later I notice it has not been deleted. I've tried restarting my computer, and completely turning it off for 24 hours then seeing it its gone, but it never deletes.

I've not got this problem, I just need some clarification on what the process is...
If the original restore discs are lost, what methods are there to restore a Mac back to it's original state (with HDD's wiped). Is it possible to get a set of restore discs from somewhere? Do restore discs from other Macs of the same model work fine? Or will SL need to be bought, upgraded and then wiped after that (I'm hearing SL is actually a full version, so by upgrading and then booting into it again, you can do an erase and install)
