MacBook Air :: How To Erase Data To Make Space Available To Reinstall Mac OS X Lion

Mar 13, 2012

My MB Air is not booting (I get the ever gray Apple logo screen with the spinning wheel, and nothing happens) Following instructions I found online, I tried the disk utility repair disk and permissions and, apparently, there's nothing wrong.  Still, the system won't boot!

I'm now trying to reinstall Mac OS X Lion, but the system requires about 0.5 GB of additional free disk space to install!

Is there anyway I can access the OS terminal screen (command line interface), so I may delete a few files, creating additional disk space?

I have been looking for something desperately, but I have only found answers that have said "use your install CD". I got my Mac pre-used so I did not get it with any CD.

I have a MacBook Pro running OSx 10.9.4 and have been successfully using Time Machine with a WD My Passport External Hard Drive for a while.  Now (after 10 days with a successful back-up), the computer will not back-up.  I have gone into disk utility and tried to erase, partition, and/or repair the disk, but repeatedly get error messages - it can't erase the disk, re-partition the disk  or unmount the disk.

Intel Mac :: Erase A File That Says It Cannot Be Deleted?

I have a file that suddenly appeared and it says that it can not be deleted.  I dragged it to the trash and the exact message is:

The item "7702D020" can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted.

I tried unlocking it.  It does nothing when I try to find the info.  It says that it is an Excel file and I can not open it either.  I am afraid that it is a "nasty" type file.  Malware or something along those lines.

OS X Mavericks :: How To Access Time Machine Backups After Doing Erase / Reinstall

Aug 25, 2014

I recently did a complete erase of my hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. I chose to start clean rather than use any Time Machine back-ups. I used the same external hard drive for my new Time Machine back-ups. Now I cannot open any back-ups/items prior to the re-install via Time Machine. They are listed along the right hand sidebar in Time Machine (star wars view) but will not open when clicked on.

Some files I can access if I go to the actual backup folder - ex a Pages doc BUT ff I try to open the iPhoto library from the back-up folders stored on the external drive, I get the following error message -

I cannot open the iPhoto "package" to access individual photos from these back-ups.

So - how can I get Time Machine to allow access to the pre-install back-ups??

MacBook Pro :: Deleted OS X Partition When Installing Windows

I accidentally deleted my husband's mac osx partition when I was installing windows 7 via bootcamp on his macbook pro. When I was installing windows it showed all these partitions (disk 0 partition, disk 1 BOOTCAMP, etc.) so I deleted all of them, thinking I would save space. When I restarted the macbook pressed "option," only the windows drive appeared. I had no idea I could delete the primary OS when I was in windows. I now have fully functioning windows 7 but no osx.

Windows On Mac :: Using Disk Utility To Erase And Make New Partition

Feb 27, 2010

My Computer: 2.8 GHz intel Core 2 Duo Mac, running OS X Ver. 10.5.8. I've partitioned my hard drive before, but in order to get more space on my Windows partition I have made a disk image using a program called Winclone. I also backed up important files to my external hard drive, and then used disk utility to erase and make a new partition so I could restore the Winclone disk image I made and have everything back. What I'm concerned about is I've been waiting for this new partition (65 GB) to finish being made and its taking a while. I read that if you stop the process it could damage the OS X side and you could lose all your files.

I started to run time machine about 10 minutes ago and set the destination to my external drive for backup (Its a huge drive, it can hold 650+ GB so I'm not worried about running out of space.) Do I stop Disk Utility and risk it? Do I let it run? Do I kiss my computer goodbye and pray that Time Machine backed everything up right onto my external hard drive? I don't know if Time Machine is working correctly because I started it after I began to partition my hard drive. What to do. Should I let Time Machine back everything up, the disconnect my external and end Disk Utility?

Hardware :: BootCamp Expired - Merge / Erase XP Partition Back?

Jan 7, 2008

I have XP installed in my Intel Macbook Pro in the separate partition created by boot camp. Recently while I was running on XP the computer crashed badly and XP system seemed to have been damaged and I can't boot as XP anymore. I would like to simply erase the XP partition and merge it with the main drive. But the problem is that Boot Camp got expired and I can't use the application to do that. Can anyone tell me how I can do that?? I am guessing that Disk Utility would be the one to use but I want to make sure I know what I am doing before I screw up anything.

OS X :: Undoing Partition - Reinstall Really Necessary?

Jun 23, 2009

When I bought my Macbook about a year and a half ago, a computer savvy friend set it up. So far as I can tell, he split my hard drive in half with one side intended to be a backup. Now I'm receiving constant notifications that my startup disc is nearly full. How do I undo whatever he did and make my startup disc as large as it can be? I've found some answers via Google, but I'm hoping there's another way (in large part because I have no idea how to backup everything and reinstall): [URL]. Why, oh why, did he do this to my computer. It looks as though the backup portion has 41.95 GB available, whereas my regular drive has only 236.4 MB available.
