Jun 20, 2012I upgraded the hard drive in my Macbook Pro from a 500G to a 1T drive... Each time I try to restore, it fails at the same point with a "file error" and asks to restart the process. How can I get by thsi without re-backing up the old drive to the Time Capsule?

May 10, 2012Update 2012-002 on macbook pro. When rebooting,after 'successful' install, I now see a repeating cycle of Error = 19, unable to mount root. From my *nix perspective I fear the worst - that the boot sector (at a minimum) is hosed. I tried (running Lion 10.7.x) booting with the command key down - no joy. do not currently have my install disk (sadly, it's in storage, somewhere). I'm concerned about this. this is VERY unusual for an update. This is a relatively new drive (750GB drive installed about 8 months ago). At no point have I seen errors, and believe me, I look. Assuming the worst case is repartitioning? (ah for hte days of 'fdisk /mbr')

Apr 6, 2012I have a Mac Mini/Snow Leopard 10.6.8 10K549. I am trying to run Software Update and it is failing to install the Software Installer Update 1.0. I have run Disk repair and Repair Permissions including booting standalone CD and downloading the update - but just keep getting "An Error has occurred".

May 15, 2012Before the 10.7.4 update the WIFI connection from the iMac 21.5" to the airport extreme router works fine!
Now it's failing several times a day! it looses the wifi connection and you are unable to see any wireless accesspoints or SSID's
Macbook pro, iphone & ipad + PC's still works fine!
The only way to get the wireless up and working again is to shutdown and restart the iMac.
In the log i can see alot, don't know if this is some clue or error occuring just after the wireless connection is dropped for unknown reasons.

OS X :: Can't Complete The Download Of The Mac 10.5.7 Update!
Jun 20, 2009Every time I try to download it, it says error about 80mB into the download.
Then it tells me to look for the package through Finder but I can't find it.
And it happens EVERY TIME I try to download it.
It's driving me nuts that I'm wasting my precious internet on this pointless downloading! I could have had the update by now!
Mac Pro :: Keep Getting Complete Freezes After 10.9.3 Update
Jun 22, 2014Since i updated my Mac Pro to 10.9.3 i keep getting complete freezes. It only happens when switch from my main screen to my second one.I first thought the old 'non' mac GPU in my 2009 Mac Pro was the issue. Recently replaced my 2009 with a 2013, and i seem to get minimum of 1 freeze a day.
Its usually within an hour after start up.My brother told me it could be the connection to my USB 3.0 raid bay due to the speed differences, but even with that one disconnected it freezes.I just did a competence repair in disk utilities lets see the results now.But i think its the latest update that has a bug.
MacBook :: It Has Been Failing To Turn On Sometimes
Apr 22, 2012I'm new to the forum here, and I've been trying to research this problem for ages to no avail so I thought I'd try here.
My Macbook has been failing to turn on sometimes. When I press the startup button, the light on the lower right turns on, but the screen remains black and there's no startup sound. I can hear the hard drive start up, and when I do a cold restart, I can hear the hard drive whir to a stop. When this happens, I have to do the cold restart many times (sometimes once, sometimes 15, and once I had to do it for about 20 min before it could start up). When it starts up, it's fine and it's like as if nothing's happened.

I'm seeing a severe graphics glitch. At first I attributed it to a VM, but it has started affecting my whole system. Repeated reboots will eventually clear the issue, but it will trigger again when I boot up a VM, watch a flash video, or do anything GPU intensive. This doesn't happen every time I perform these actions so I have had difficulty finding a specific cause.
MacBook :: Failing To Boot To OS X Or From OS X Disc?
Apr 10, 2010My MacBook 13" which was the current model when I bought it in September '08 decided after a normal shut down to not boot up the next time I tried. It gets as far as loading the grey apple symbol and then gets no further (no loading cog etc.
Naturally my first thought was to try to repair from my OSX install disc but when I booted from this the same problem occurred (the grey apple symbol, no further). The disc is definitely recognised by the disc drive and is displayed when I hold the option key on startup. I also tried using a friends OSX disc and the same problem occurred so I'm assuming it can't be the disc.
I have tried booting in safe mode, single user mode & verbose mode, none of which work although I am able to see where the script gets to in a safe mode boot by using the option that shows this .
The weirdest thing is that I have dual-boot set up with Ubuntu on my macbook and I can still boot to ubuntu fine, also all linux live discs I have tried in order to investigate the hard drive have had no trouble booting.
MacBook :: Backup Disk Failing?
Aug 3, 2010I use time machine to back up my data to a 300 Gb external iomega disk that I purchased back in 2006. Yesterday, Time Machine could not complete a backup and returned a 'Could not create the backup folder' error. I ran disk utilities and it returned a host of errors, ending with the message that the disk is corrupt, could not be repaired and I had to back up my data immediately. The data on the disk was however, still accessible.

Mar 27, 2012I've had my Macbook for 3 years, each year I have to buy a new mag safe power adapter. I'm not some extreme user, the connection between the coupling and the cord is incredibly poorly designed. I had a PowerPC powerbook 12" before and never had a failure. My computer (and mag safe) goes to the lab and back home and that's it. Do these plugs have a warranty? I'm on my third one and it is starting to fail the same way (where the cord meets the magnetic plug at the computer). At least time it's less than a year old, if there is a warranty.

MacBook Pro :: OS X 10.6.8 And ILife Installations Failing
Apr 23, 2012I own a 13 inch Macbook Pro from 2010 which originally came installed with Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Over the course of my use of this macbook I upgraded it to Lion 10.7. Recently I made the decision to go back to SL and popped the OS X disc in (the disc it came with). The install of SL went fine and I didn't notice a problem until I rebooted into the new install and went to install iLife from the DVD that came with my Mac.
As soon as I enter my password into the installer and it begins the install process, it fails with a big yellow exclamation mark, simply saying the install failed. The same thing happened with my downloaded 10.6.8 combo update, so this proves it cannot be an issue with the DVD drive.
The only thing I can think of is that the OS X disc appeared scratched, so this may have resulted in a faulty install which meant it could then not allow the 10.6.8 update or iLife to be installed...

Hardware :: Macbook Pro Power Cable Failing?
Nov 11, 2010I have a uni-body Macbook Pro (Late 2008) At the time of it's release, Apple was still selling the old type of magsafe power cables... (The one that a lot of people reported having melting and other issues with. )
Well, mine has been fine, (and still works) but I'm starting to get worried about the serious fraying inside the cable casing. (See pictures below) I never ever use the wrapping clips on the adapter to wrap my cable around. I always coil it up loosely, to prevent further damage.
Basically what I'm wondering is, if I bring this into Apple will they replace it for free? Or will I have to pay for it? I do have Apple Care.

MacBook Pro :: Optical Drive Is Failing Rather Than Otherwise Acting Up?
Apr 15, 2012Lately, I've been having trouble with my optical drive. It used to read ISO CDs, which it no longer can do. I assumed that was a software issue. Now it's spit out two DVDs and can't read them.
I'm starting to worry that the drive is actually failing. Is there a test I can do before I decide the drive needs replacement? If it's some kind of munged software or firmware issue and I replace the drive, I'm gonna feel like a doofus.
I'm outside of AppleCare now, so if it needs replacing, I'm going to have to do it myself.
I just replaced the hard drive (now I have 1 TB!), but that was relatively simple. I've never replaced a laptop optical drive before.

OS X Mavericks :: GPU Failing Macbook Usually Freezes During Start Up?
Sep 5, 2014I have 2011 Macbook Pro (one of those that usually freezes during booting due to GPU failure). My Macbook will only boot if the GPU doesn't kick in during the start up. (When I'm very lucky the computer will get to the desktop and I can disable the GPU with gfxCardStatus). Sometimes I can boot the machine if I wrap it in a blanket to overheat it. Then it won't activate the GPU during booting if I'm lucky.
This is my question: Can I update my OS X if I maybe have to reboot a frozen machine 50 times before I reach the desktop? This would very probably mean that the OS would install and then ask for a reboot. And then I would maybe have to power off and retry to reboot many many times. Would this FUBAR the system. or would it work when I finally got it up and running?
Is the update installed 100% BEFORE the reboot, or are some of the updates installed AFTER the reboot? If that is the case, I would think it would have an effect if I had to power down the machine 50 times to get that one "lucky" reboot?

Recently I've noticed that the computer has been running extremely hot, even when just playing a simple youtube video or anything else flash related.The other day I was playing the Sims 2 in Windows through Bootcamp and the graphics became distorted and garbled. I had to hold down the power button until the computer shut off because it was impossible to see or do anything. This has happened a few other times while paying the game.I have had some waking issues where the screen will not come back on after the mac has been asleep. The only way to fix this is to hold down the power button and wait for it to fully turn off, then reboot.

And HD is still running quiet (no strange mechanical noises I'm accustomed to hearing prior to a failure). Nevertheless, I'm installing a new HD tomorrow and recloning it from a backup external drive (operating from external until then).

Never had any issue with the device and this seems to have happened all of a sudden. Installed an SSD a few months ago, and just realised the ssd did not have a recovery partition. However I connected my older hardrive via USB to access recovery which seemed to work fine.
NOTE: for the past few weeks, every now and then I was unable to power the device off and whenever this occurred, there seemed to be a few bugs (ie unable to empty thrash-error 50 and enable to increase/decrease volume/screen brightness). However, holding the power button and restarting it seemed to have fixed it.
Had the same issue but this time around MBP failed to boot up.

Aug 21, 2010So I took my MBP into the apple store today and explained that my original hard drive was showing as failing after my two momentus xt drives were apparently failing as well. He said it was really strange and hooked up the drive to their external interface and low and behold there was no errors on the drive. He said it's most likely being caused by IO errors due to a bad SATA cable or possibly logic board. We had my MBP sent in for testing. So basically if you see SMART failing status it may not be the drive after all.

Dec 7, 2014The Super Drive on my MBP seems to be completely busted, whenever I try to read a DVD or CD it takes the disc in, spins it around a couple of times and then ejects it again without ever coming up with any options as to what to do with the disc. Discs don't appear in Finder either. It's obviously failing to read the discs and ejecting them within 30 seconds.
Now I've searched for a solution and as a result I've reset the NVRAM to no avail, and also tried using a CD lens cleaner but that seemed to have no effect either, I guess maybe as it got ejected within just 30 seconds as every other disc does.
The next solution I've found online is to delete Finder's preference files. The files I'm supposed to delete are "com.apple.finder.plist" and com.apple.sidebars.plist", however neither of these files appear to exist on my computer.
I remember discovering the fault while my MBP was still in warranty but I rarely use the Super Drive so totally forgot about it and it's now out of warranty

Jul 25, 2010I have 2010 mbp 13inch 2.6ghz 4gigs ram intel core i5. I've only had it for five days and recently experienced a complete freeze. trackpad and power button unresponsive, display and apple icon on back of lid did not turn off or change in any way when lid was closed/opened. only app running was google chrome.
