MacBook :: Backup Disk Failing?

Aug 3, 2010

I use time machine to back up my data to a 300 Gb external iomega disk that I purchased back in 2006. Yesterday, Time Machine could not complete a backup and returned a 'Could not create the backup folder' error. I ran disk utilities and it returned a host of errors, ending with the message that the disk is corrupt, could not be repaired and I had to back up my data immediately. The data on the disk was however, still accessible.

OS X :: Disk Utility Failing To Format Ext. Fire Wire Disk

Dec 2, 2009

I have a problem with Disk Utility , when trying to format an external fire wire drive.

I cleaned out the drive and proceeded to erase it with zeros. After this Disk utility will not display the subdirectory or verify, repair, partition, erase the disk. The main disk name is still visible, but I cant access any functions.
Error message says input output error.

DiskWarrior will not help, as the original directory is beyond recovery.

I suppose that I have damaged the original directory, and now I would ask the honourable forum if there is any remedy for my actions?

MacBook Pro :: Disk Utility Says Internal Hard Drive Is Failing?

Dec 28, 2010

However, my hard drive appears to be running fine - haven't noticed any degradation of performance since receiving the warnings two days ago. And HD is still running quiet (no strange mechanical noises I'm accustomed to hearing prior to a failure). Nevertheless, I'm installing a new HD tomorrow and recloning it from a backup external drive (operating from external until then).

MacBook Pro :: Failing To Boot Up Despite Disk Utility Repair And PRAM

Jun 2, 2014

Problem: MBP frozen on boot up screen with Apple logo and turning gear (which freezes after a while aswell)

Solutions attempted: disk repair via custom recovery- disk utility, PRAM

Device: MacBook Pro 15" (early 2010) running 10.9

Additional info-

Never had any issue with the device and this seems to have happened all of a sudden. Installed an SSD a few months ago, and just realised the ssd did not have a recovery partition. However I connected my older hardrive via USB to access recovery which seemed to work fine.

NOTE: for the past few weeks, every now and then I was unable to power the device off and whenever this occurred, there seemed to be a few bugs (ie unable to empty thrash-error 50 and enable to increase/decrease volume/screen brightness). However, holding the power button and restarting it seemed to have fixed it.

Had the same issue but this time around MBP failed to boot up.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Backup Failing?

Apr 9, 2012

My Time Machine backup is failing... and I'm a little confused as to why.  I thought it was supposed to just write over the old backups?  Here's a breakdown of what I have going on...

-I have two x 1TB WD MyBook's.

-I'm using one of them as storage, and the other one as my Time Machine drive.  So essentially I'm doing a poor man's RAID.  I just want to make sure I have a backup of my data in case the drive dies... and it's too big to back up to a cloud.

-The main drive is about half full (Available: 460.49GB)

-The Time Machine drive shows 485.48GB available.  Close enough I suppose.

The backup is failing with the attached message.  Yes, I added more stuff to the drive today (hence the increase in backup size), but why would it need that size all over again?  Why wouldn't it just append the exsisting 485GB, and add the new 158GB.  Come to think of it, there's no way what I added today increased the size 158GB, so that's strange in itself.

Software :: Unable To Backup Via Time Machine / Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Created

May 1, 2008

I was a PC user who recently moved to mac. I have a macbook (intel 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD). When I was using PC, I backed up all my data to a network storage device (Buffalo LinkStation 250 GB connected to a 802.11g netgear router which is supplied by Sky) using a program called SmartSync Pro, which worked very well. Although I can connect to and mount the Share folder on this drive when the macbook is connected to the network, Time Machine will not back up to it. It wouldnt even recognise the disk on the network.

So I went onto the trusty internet, and found that you can get time machine to recognise the Share folder. (This was obtained from: http://blog.imulus.com/george/software/using-leopard-time-machine-to-backup-of-a-network/)See my comment on their page at the bottom, number 66.

It recommended entering the following in to the Terminal: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

Before attempting backup I have to go into "Network" and select the Share folder by double clicking on it. This seems to mount the volume. After this, it can be seen in Time Machine as a potential backup destination.

However, this method does not work for me. Time Machine "prepares" for a while, then gives the following message: Time Machine error. The backup disk image could not be created.

More internet searching took me to macosxhints which suggests creating something called a sparsebundle image on my local system. (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080420211034137) Have not tried this yet as I thought it would be prudent to seek some help first.

Apple have deliberately disabled the ability for Time Machine to back up to network attached storage, (except of course to their proprietory Time Capsule):

Is this because time machine requires a network faster than 802.11g?

Is this because a time machine backup to a network attached storage device is unreliable and the data is corrupted?

I dont want to shell out more cash for a time capsule. I would prefer not to have to hardwire to an external drive (which I will also have to go out and buy). Any thoughts?

I couldnt back up using time machine because there was problems with privileges, but did manage to back up my main files to an external drive. I have OS X LION backed up on a BOOTABLE DVD because the os was running on OS X LION BEFORE THIS FAILING SIGN APPEARED. I was woundering if there was any terminal commands to sort it out?And also would I by any chance be able to add another partition to an external hardrive without erasing it? if so, how?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Backup Is Too Large For The Backup Disk?

Feb 10, 2012

my TM wil not back up! It states that this backup is too large for the backup disk. The back up disk requires 573.50 GB but only 225.23 GB are available. The TM needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Upen TM perferences to select a LARGER backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding file.

Okay I;m sorry but obvioulsy I dont get this. I've never called Apple for help! I have every product they sell practically including Protection Plans I never used and no one will help me with this. My MAC is starting to have black or white screens and i can hear it running but it will not do anything so i have to reboot it, it screws up Enturage and then I have to rebuild that ( 5 times this year) anyway... I would like to back everything up- can I delete everything on the Time Capsule or Time Machine; god I dont even know what it is called Im so MAD... help if you can please. I'm going to have to take this to the genius people at the store and probably buy another computer but like before they will not save my files.

MacBook Pro :: The Network Backup Disk Does Not Support The Required AFP Features

May 21, 2012

I am trying to set up timeMachine on my new mac book pro over a regular home network on a shared network drive. I have tried everything but I keep getting "The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features." I am on lion with the lateset unpdate (10.7.4). I have even tried creating sparebundles on from tutorial that I have found online, but non of the hacks that I have tried seemed to work. Have anyone figured out a way around this? If so, can you share, it will be greatful. I could just buy the time capsule that apple sells but I already have a 2TB internal HDD in an old pc that's hosting my file server so no need for the time capsule hardware.
