MacBook :: Whats The Difference Between The Air And The Pro
Jun 1, 2012
I'm looking to buy a Macbook, either the Air or the Pro, however I am not sure of what the differences really are. I am looking to use it for quite some time, more school work than anything.

So when the windows 7 beat was launched, i ended up choosing to download the 32-bit version as I knew it would run, and I wasn't sure if I was compatible or not.
1. I have a 20" iMac 2.4GHz 2GB RAM etc. Is my computer capable of running 64-bit?
2. Whats the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit? Is 64-bit faster?

I have a macbook pro, 2.4ghz intel and recently picked up logitech's x540 5.1 surround sound speakers.
I know need a good external usb sound card to push the 5.1 surround sound to its fullest
I've been looking around and two caught my attention so far. The Griffin Firewave (which has been discontinued) and the Creative Labs SB1090 USB Sound Blaster X-Fi.
The griffin seems to be fully compatible, but I occasionally game on my windows xp bootcamp parition.. and have read that it is not compatible with windows.
The creative one however is, but of course we all know creative labs doesnt realize that there are actually other OS systems out there other than Windows. Ive searched and found that people were able to get it to work on their macs, others havnt..
I need a definite answer
Or if anyone can recommend another one that I didnt mention.

I recently reinstalled Lion on my system and updated it and all that. Now I can't seem to install anything or run a program unless I'm at the computer. No matter what I set my power settings to my system will log out and cancel anything that's running, including downlaods and instalations. This is very frustrating when trying to download something overnight if it's a large file. It never used to do this, and I can only guess it's something with the latest update.

my MBP has been acting up, i just had the logic board and the lcd display replaced for a 2nd time due to a scrambled and soon after " black screen" syndrome now after i just picked up my MBP from repair, yesterday my airport and ethernet are not really working. it works for a while and then network says that i have a self assigned ip address, the router slot is blank, i have the wrong ip add. starting with 162 so its (closed) the only solution is to physically unplug the router and then plug back in i spent almost 3 hr yesterday with my ISP trying to troubleshoot, for i thought it was my net gear modem/ router that was at fault but that was not the case its my mac so i would like to know exactly what components are included in my MBP 3.1 santa rosa logic board is the air port and ethernet controller located in the logic board ?
how about the nvidia video card is it also locted in the logic board ?
if it is can Apple just replace the defect part or do they have to replace the entire logic board again ?
this is my sys spec:
Model Name:MacBook Pro
Model Identifier:MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed:2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors:1
Total Number Of Cores:2
L2 Cache:4 MB
Memory:4 GB
Bus Speed:800 MHz
Boot ROM Version:MBP31.0070.B07
thank you for taking the time to help
cheers

Looking to encode all my video DVDs etc, for my library. I have an Apple TV, PS3, iMac (2Ghz Core 2 Duo) and iPhone. I have been using Handbrake which is great, use the Apple TV preset which plays on all the devices listed I have. However I'm just wondering if there is a paid for, or free program that is faster or better in any respect for converting? I know H264 is CPU intensive, so is Handbrake going to be the best and fastest anyway?

I'm kinda' new to the whole audio recording process and I'm leaning more towards the 13' MBP bc the only difference between the 15' and the 13' is an optical in line. So, what does the optical line in do? And is it worth the extra $200 because i do not think 2' of monitor space is?

Looking to upgrade my ram from a 2 gigs to 4 gigs. Was wondering if it would make a noticeable difference. I dont do anything graphic heavy. I only use the laptop for one or two games (sims 3, roller coaster tycoon) and alot of youtube and web surfing. Would upgrading to two gigs be beneficial for me?

I was just wondering if there was anyway to tell the difference between a Rev. B and a Rev. C. I'll be taking a look at one this weekend that is the 1.86GHZ with 120 HDD, I believe both of these were/are offered on both revisions.

I just ordered my "17i5" (a nice shorthand there) with the 128GB SSD. I've been noticing here and there on these forums about people being worried about using SSD with large files, needing a lot of disk usage (I.e. Scratch disk), and limiting the amount of overall data one puts on the drive. This will be my first experience with an SSD computer. Do I actually need to worry about any of this? In terms of general usage, shouldn't the SSD be simply a much faster and energy efficient disk drive? I will of course keep in mind the normals things, like making sure not to drop below 5GB of remaining storage (OS X doesn't like that even with a standard platter hard drive - though I think that has to do with the writing RAM contents upon Sleep, which I disable anyway).

I went out the other day and bought the new macbook pro with the 2.8GHz processor and the solid state upgrade but now I have questions about it. On the keynote address, steve said that there will be two graphics cards in it. How do I know which one I'm using? Also what is the difference between the macbook and the macbook pro? One last question-Why didn't Apple update the 17" macbook pro? On a different note, I hate how the Macbook looks like the macbook pro. I know why apple did that-its because they sell more macbooks then pro's so they like care about the regular macbook owners being happy much more then the macbook pro owners but for someone like me who can pay the extra money, it does suck because I don't feel anymore special.
