I recently sold my MacBook Pro, but before doing so I made a compressed image of the hard drive via Disk Utility so I would have access to the files once the laptop was gone. The file was roughly 460GB compressed. The file has been stored on my Drobo. Now I'm trying to mount the image so I can move things over to my new computer but I'm having trouble getting the image to mount, convert or anything. Typically I get a message to the effect of "no mountable filesystem found".
I have downloaded Lion to my Macbook Pro. We live in a rural area and are on a "low speed" high speed internet connection, so it took me ~24 hours to download. I have not yet begun the installation process, and have copied the installesd.dmg from the install folder to my desktop. We have 3 macs in our house, and I don't want to have to try to download again, as the process is so slow. Can I just copy the installesd.dmg to a DVD or flash drive to install it on the other 2 macs?
If this is possible, do I have to do anything special? Can I install from the flash or DVD or do I need to copy onto the target mac first? Although both other macs are backed up using time machine, I'm a little nervous about just launching an installation without really knowing what I'm doing.
Well, after using Monolingual on my iBook G4 late '04 1.2GHZ running Tiger 10.4.11 I tried to install an app from a dmg file and the image mounts but when clicked Finder relaunches (or at least seems to because it blinks off then back on as when relaunching) and the image does not open. Did I mess up the architectures? I left the architectures as marked by Monolingual and proceeded with the deletion.
difference is obviously HDD and processir but whats the difference on pratic? Does the change worth 200$ ?More hdd means faster computing? I have to choose between two. I am not a pro but i dont want a slow speed computer either.
I have a macbook pro, 2.4ghz intel and recently picked up logitech's x540 5.1 surround sound speakers.
I know need a good external usb sound card to push the 5.1 surround sound to its fullest
I've been looking around and two caught my attention so far. The Griffin Firewave (which has been discontinued) and the Creative Labs SB1090 USB Sound Blaster X-Fi.
The griffin seems to be fully compatible, but I occasionally game on my windows xp bootcamp parition.. and have read that it is not compatible with windows.
The creative one however is, but of course we all know creative labs doesnt realize that there are actually other OS systems out there other than Windows. Ive searched and found that people were able to get it to work on their macs, others havnt..
I need a definite answer
Or if anyone can recommend another one that I didnt mention.
I have to do an assignment and it require me to insert a video of youtube onto a powerpoint presentation. I was unsure of what programs to use for this so i thought that there might be away to film my computer while i watch the yourtube video.
I'm using a 2GHz PowerPC G5, OS X 10.4.11, with 1 GB on one dimm. I cannot open ANY .dmg files. I have tried clicking the image, and also on a clean download used "open with" each time I received the following message The following disk image failed to mount Reason: Device not configured
I have followed the instructions in this thread:- Disk image failed to mount: Device not configured. Firstly Run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Click on "Macintosh HD" in the left column and then press the "Repair Disk Permissions" button. Delete the file called /System/Library/Extension.kextcache Delete the folder called /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches/ Restart
That made no difference. I then tried bobw's advice here Panther - Disk Image "mounting Failed" Panther - Disk Image "mounting Failed". That made no difference. I have since gone on to justanswer.com and the advice I received was to do an archive and install and then a full combo update.
When sites do various benchmark tests, they typically use something like 3DMark, and I think Cinebench CPU, etc.
First, I probably got those benchmark apps wrong...which ones do tech sites typically use?
Also, what exactly do these benchmarks exam.
Say I have a rendering application that is processor heavy...what benchmark should I be looking at?
Say I have another application for modeling, and I know it is graphics intensive. What benchmark should I be looking at?
And, to round things out, if I have an application that I know is memory heavy, what stats should I look at.
The reason I'm asking, is when upgrading my computer (at this point RAM), or considering a new MacPro, I want to know I'm buying for the right reasons.
I don't want to buy a powerful computer to find out that its max potential is not fully realized as it relies on something else. Granted I understand a new comp all around will perform better. However, applications such as Maxwell render does not hold back, it will use every processor available (8-cores would be amazing!), but others don't rely on processor, but memory more so.
Even then, I'm not sure all the time how the application performs. With as many apps as I use for different things (Rhino NURBS modeling [XP], Maxwell Render, VIZ/3DS Max, SketchUp, Adobe CS3, CAD) I can't always tell what part of the comp they use.
Thanks [for those who read everything and understand what I'm asking]
My isp (Comcast) informed me that I could no longer send emails unless I changed my email port from port 25 to port 587. When I open my network preferences to make the change I get a message that my network preferences have been changed by another application. When I cancel the message it reappears and will not allow me to do anything even quit network preferences.
When I open up my mail application on my mac there is a search bar on top. When I search for something the items that I searched for obviously comes up. Picture of what I'm going to ask: What does the "rank" mean?
Does anyone have any idea as to what those icons are in under "Fonts" in the Apple mail program? Launch Mail. New. Choose Fonts. And you'll see " T underlined" explained....T cross thru, etc. Then you'll see a colored box...launches colors....Then a picture of a page. What does that do? Another "T" this time you can change the background color of the box back and forth. Then some sort of bars with a triangle, a box and a smaller box. Wait? Am I playing Myst? Then, finally a wheel that you can change from degrees.
I recently reinstalled Lion on my system and updated it and all that. Now I can't seem to install anything or run a program unless I'm at the computer. No matter what I set my power settings to my system will log out and cancel anything that's running, including downlaods and instalations. This is very frustrating when trying to download something overnight if it's a large file. It never used to do this, and I can only guess it's something with the latest update.

my MBP has been acting up, i just had the logic board and the lcd display replaced for a 2nd time due to a scrambled and soon after " black screen" syndrome now after i just picked up my MBP from repair, yesterday my airport and ethernet are not really working. it works for a while and then network says that i have a self assigned ip address, the router slot is blank, i have the wrong ip add. starting with 162 so its (closed) the only solution is to physically unplug the router and then plug back in i spent almost 3 hr yesterday with my ISP trying to troubleshoot, for i thought it was my net gear modem/ router that was at fault but that was not the case its my mac so i would like to know exactly what components are included in my MBP 3.1 santa rosa logic board is the air port and ethernet controller located in the logic board ? how about the nvidia video card is it also locted in the logic board ?
if it is can Apple just replace the defect part or do they have to replace the entire logic board again ?

Looking to encode all my video DVDs etc, for my library. I have an Apple TV, PS3, iMac (2Ghz Core 2 Duo) and iPhone. I have been using Handbrake which is great, use the Apple TV preset which plays on all the devices listed I have. However I'm just wondering if there is a paid for, or free program that is faster or better in any respect for converting? I know H264 is CPU intensive, so is Handbrake going to be the best and fastest anyway?
