MacBook :: Using Two Separate Operating Systems On It?

Apr 30, 2012

I am considering to get a new Mac. In that I want to be able to use two seperate operating systems. The Mac operating system and maybe either a windows or linux or an other useful and functional alternative! The reason for this is, that I have several laptops incl. an iPad. I have concluded that iPad isnt that useful for my needs till now, its not very functional for my needs. I am also going to upgrade my smart mobile still considering functional alternatives (would like to hear yoru thoughts about this as well)! I want to integrate them into one machine only and utilize cloud  and / or an external Disk, and be better able to use useful apps and software that are not available on either one of the systems on their own my own system! Usage will be both for biz and private, but at the end usefulness, and functionality will play a big part in my final decision! Do you think this is practical, useful and cost effective way doing it the way I want to do?

iPad, Other OS

OS X :: Boot From Two Operating Systems / Cloning The Hard Drive?

Dec 23, 2010

I want to do some upgrade things with my macbook and need to know if all is correct. My current internal hd is 80gb. I'm on 10.4.11. I plan on going to Snow Leopard but I want to keep my 10.4.11 system too to use. Almost 2 year old intel macbook.

I have superduper. I just got a new 500gb drive for the macbook. I also got a usb external 2.5" enclosure. I haven't done anything yet. What I want to do.... I want to partition the new hd into two. Probably 120gb to clone my current system on (with some room for growth) and the remainder to do a whole new fresh install + various applications of Snow Leopard.

Firstly, is it OK for me to have two separate OS's to boot from?

Secondly, cloning procedure.... should I take out my current hd and put it into the external enclosure, then put in the new hd, then boot from my former drive via usb and clone it onto the newly installed drive?

OR...put the new drive first into the enclosure, clone my system onto it, then switch out the drives? Does it matter which way?

Thirdly, since I'm not going to be doing any upgrading of my 10.4 system to SL....I'm leaving it intact as is.....and then doing a completely new install of SL....is there anything weird I should look out for. I dunno....my admin account...or not being able to have Logic installed more than once on the same machine...or anything else I should be aware of?

(Resource Busy)" A few other times I tried it gave me different error messages but I can't remember what they are...and now my other partition I tried to restore it to appears as "Mac OS X Install DVD", the file name of the.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Two Separate Time Machine Backups / Use To Create Two Separate Profiles On One New Computer

Mar 31, 2012

I have an iMac 27 (end of year 2009) I5.It has 1 TB internal and I want to replace it with a 2 TB internal. I have time machine backups on an external hard drive that has been connected via Firewire. I have another iMac (my son's)Imac 24 Intel Core 2 Duo that has it's own separate Time machine backup to it's own separate firewire connected external drive. Both machines are completely up to date with the latest version of Lion and all other necessary software updates. When the internal hardrive is replaced - I want to use my latest time machine backup to create one profile on the imac and then use my son's latest time machine back up for a second profile. The end goal being to have everything from my current set up ie: apps, documents, itunes, etc existing in one profile and everything in my son's current set up existing in the other profile. We can both be administrators for the time being as well.I should note even though we both have some of the same apps, we both also have other apps that the other does not.

My profile will be using about 900 gigs of total space. My son's profile will be using about 250 gigs of total space. This is temporary until the new iMac is released. Then I will want to transfer my profile to that leaving my son's intact on the iMac 27 I5.I realize that during the temporary period that Time Machine will be making backups of this entire two profile setup, which I am now understanding as I write this will create a new issue for me when I want to transfer only my profile to the new computer as well. But one bridge to cross at a time, I guess.I need to do this because we must bring his current computer to my father - as his iMac G5 is inoperable. We have been doing this round robin hand me down in our family since IMac DV special edition :-)

MacBook Pro :: NAS Server Systems?

Jun 17, 2014

I have a small office (5-10 Mac books) working on wifi, and we are needing a better way to store large art and video files somewhere other than external hard drives. (For the amount of work we do, we would simply have too many hard drives floating around). Also, I need all of my staff to have access to the same "cloud" server, as well as some satellite workers.

Someone recommended an NAS enclosure with multiple hard drives...Is this my best option? And if so, what are the best NAS servers out there?

OS X :: Separate IP For Separate User?

Dec 5, 2009

hat I'm doing is a little crazy, but I'm doing it partly just for the fun of making it work. I'm trying to make my Intel so my PPC user can connect to my user via screen sharing and play an Intel based game online with me. I have the screen sharing working and everything, but apparently the LAN doesn't work because we have the same IP.

So, my question is: Is there a way to make my other user have a different IP than my main user? I'm thinking maybe some mac address emulator may work, but I thought I'd see if anyone here knew an easier way before I got too complicated.

MacBook Pro :: Ditching Optical Drive - Segmenting Two Systems?

Sep 12, 2010

Thinking about ditching the optical drive in my mid 2008 2.5Ghz 15" Macbook Pro and adding a small but fast SSD drive. My idea is to have two hard drives obviously. I would like to have the SSD drive be my specialized drive for running FCP and possible After Effects. The older 250GB drive that is the original equipment would be my main drive. I would do all my web design, flash, photoshop, illustrator, ftp, ssh, programming and web surfing/everyday stuff. Both Drives would be bootable. the 250 drive would have snow leopard and everything else on it and the SSD drive would have snow leopard as well. Is this possible or practical? Would the gains in performance and stability gained from segmenting the two systems be noticeable and worth it? I've seen some articles on dual booting different OS's on the same drive but never on their own exclusive drive with the same OS.
