I'm not able to get sound on my macbook, ive tried using a headphone, and it works fine, but as soon as i plug out the audio jack, i see a red light on the audio port, and the sound icon is grayed out...I've read similar problems on the forum, but could not get a resolution

My 15" late 2006 MBP has just stopped producing sound from the internal speakers and for the first time there is a red light visible inside the headpbone output port. Apple support says contact support but since I'm a long time out of even my extended warranty.

I went to plug my headphones into my Macbook and I noticed that the tip of the plug was glowing red, when I turned to look at the side of the computer I nonticed that there was a red light being emitted from the headphone port and the sound icon on the menu bar was grayed out. Is there actually a light in there? What does it mean? I'm uploading pictures right now, they'll be up in a few minutes. My MacBook is a late-2007 White MacBook running 10.6.1.

edit: the reason I'm wondering is because I want to convert old collections of vinyl records into digital copies at the highest quality possible and need to know if the 'line in' on the 13" will work good for that.
I've had my macbook connected to my speakers for much of the last couple of days. I reckon I last had sound from my actual macbook speak the day before yesterday - No nothing! The speaker icon in the menu bar is greyed out and in system prefs, all is normal and not muted. When I use the volume keys, the window comes up but the volume indicators don't move up or down and there is the forbidden/ no entry icon underneath the volume indicator bar. There is also a new red light omitting from the headphone port. (I'm using Lion 10.7.3)

My MacBook pro charger port isnt working. I use my charger for my sisters laptop and it works therefore indicating that the charger isn't the problem but when I charge my laptop it shows a faint green light but not charging! It's cause water spilled on my laptop the day before but it was not a lot & I let it to dry but everything works well except from the charger port!

I have installed Windows 7 RC on my Mac Book pro. Everything seems to working fine but Red light in the Audio jack is always On. This happens only when i am using Windows. In Mac the Red light is off. I don't have any issues with sound. Does anyone know why it is on and how do I turn it off?

There is no sound coming from the macbook, and when I went to check if the volume was up the volume box popped up as usual but with a symbol, similar to a no entry sign. Circle with a cross through it. Then I saw a bright red light from within the audio jack itself. When I plugged in ear phones it works fine but the built in speakers are not working.

Ever since the latest generation of MacBook/ Macbook Pro you can now send audio over the MiniDisplay Port output. The tech specs on Apples web site say no word about it. Any early adopters out that that can prove me wrong? 2 Cables (power, MiniDisplay Port to HDMI) is much better than 3 (power, headphone jack, DVI to HDMI in current Old MacBook Pro Setup). With the nice Graphics card the MacBook Air works great as a portable Media player, I just hope it has this feature.

My 2.4 Aluminum MacBook has a very serious problem, but only with the line-in port. The headphones work fine through the line out. When I plug the microphone, the built-in mic still works,]. I tried everything, it just doesn't work at all, i plugged in the microphone and changed the system preferences manually and did everything with all the applications, but still, nothing is working. I have had this MacBook for 2 weeks now. I wish I waited couple of days for the pro.

I'm trying to hook my macbook up to my 4 channel PA using a 1/8" input jack, I am using garageband, but I get no response. the driver is switched to built in line in port but still nothing. I find that when I unplug it a little bit, the computer picks up the sound but there is a strange fuzz sound that accompanies it. So basically, the input does not work when I plug it in all the way. I know it worked before, perhaps I blew the input?

It says the port can be used as an audio in as well as out but when I go to preferences, sound then try to look for the "Use audio for" tab it's not there. My friend is looking into buying the new 27" iMac Core i7 to replace his PC desktop. The only thing holding him back is that he has an analog surround sound system he uses for his speakers. View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering if I somehow have a bad firewire chip in my MBP. It hasn't been able to work with firewire audio interfaces.
- I tried a Metric Halo ULN 2 which loses sync with it's audio. It will be fine for a few minutes with itunes but then becomes distorted and ringy as if it's lost it's audio sync.
- Random kernel panics while using Logic 9, Garageband 11 with an Apogee Duet - all software fully updated. One time it froze while not doing anything - logic was simply open and sitting there. Using iTunes through the Duet seems fine.
- Pops and crackles using Presonus Firestudio.
I've tried wiping my software and reinstalling everything. I'm using a MBP 5,3 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM, Snow Leopard (10.6.5) with the latest updates. I'm going to try an Apogee One which is USB, but I'd really like to use a firewire interface. If there's something wrong with my firewire port, I'd like it taken care of. My machine is under applecare 3 year warranty. I don't think this is an easy thing to prove though.
I've got the old Macbook model, circa 2006. My audio port's been broken for awhile now, and I recently got a 5.1 surround sound system. I've been playing music through my iPod, of course not getting the full surround effect, but would love to be able to hook the Macbook up to this system, be it in full surround or not. I'm trying to plug in and use an external microphone to record a screen capture. Sound gets through the headphones great but, looking at Input Sound in the Sys Pref, the Line In device does not pick up any sound when I speak into the mic. If I switch it back to the Built-In Internal Microphone device it picks up my voice fine. In the Audio MIDI Setup, the Built-in Input device is selected as the device to be used for sound input.There is a switch on my headset to mute or unmute the mic and I've tried it in both positions. There is a volume dial on my headset (presumably for the headphones) and I've fiddled with that too. I've moved the Input volume for the Line In Audio Line-in port device all the way up and still it hasn't picked up a thing. I have a Mac os x Lion on a Macbook Pro and using a 3.5 mm mini-jack headset with two cables, one for the headphones and one for the microphone.

Despite its description, I hooked it up to my receiver and it does NOT pass audio through. I've been hunting around and all I've found so far is one Youtube video of a guy with an adapter that worked (in the sound section of the system preferences, it shows another option for output that I didn't have), but not what adapter it was.

Is the 8 core overkill for heavy hi-res graphic design, but low use audio and video editing?
I have no experience with the current Mac Pro's. I have a 1,1 original, but I understand that the Nehalem processor is far superior to the Woodcrest from the original.
Question is, with 3300 as the base of an 8 core, does a 2d designer really need that extra processor?
Does anyone know for sure if audio is carried over the new mini-DisplayPort on the late 2008 MacBook/MacBook Pro??? Some say it isn't because USB is required on the 24" LED ACD for audio... others say that USB carries audio because it also needs to serve two-way communication with iSight.
So, we KNOW that when you hook up a unibody to the new 24" ACD, you must use the USB to get audio out the ACD speakers. But, if you hook up the unibody MacBook to your HDTV with an HDMI adapter, does audio go through the mini-DisplayPort and the HDMI adapter into the TV and yield sound?? There is TONS of confusion about this on the net. Please don't add to the confusion with replies like, "Sure - why not?" or "My aunt heard at bingo that it works"
My built in speakers work fine all the time, even when I have headphones plugged in. I looked under the output devices in the system settings and the only option is for built in audio output, a.k.a speakers, there is no option for an alternate audio output, a.k.a headphones. The port instead has 3 rows of holes (for pins) and then beside that, a plus sign with a hole in each quarter. What kind of cable is needed to connect this G4 to a TV? It's an HDTV. It's a 1Ghz PowerBook G4 15" with OS 10.4.11. It doesn't have Bluetooth.
