Just noticed this on my uMBP 17" (the first 17" version), while running XP in Boot Camp.
GPU-Z is reporting that the 9600 M GT is running with only ONE PCI Express lane! NVIDIA control panel is showing the same thing!
Am I seeing things, or is it really only using 1 lane? The chip definitely supports x16.

I have noticed that using 9600m GT causes my mac to run about 20-30 degrees warmer compared to using the 9400m. For instance, when using the 9400m i'd normally get about 45-60 degrees when running firefox and itunes, but when i switch to the 9600m GT and performing the same tasks i get up to about 85 if not 90! I just thought this was a tad perculiar. Anyone with similar experiences / solutions to cooling this thing down (besides using smc which i already have installed).
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy macbook pro 15" wouldn't turn on a couple of days ago but yesterday i turned it on and everything seemed to work. Then i realised that the iSight and bluetooth weren't working. Apart from that it was fine. I then decided i wanted to use windows through bootcamp but when i tried to start it up it just black screened and didn't boot up. I then realised that it might be my graphics card so i went into system profiler and found this. I then tried both the PRAM reset and a SMC reset it didn't fix it. Is there anything else i can do? Or should i just take it to apple?

i used to use only the 9600m gt for gaming as 9400m was handling everything, has better battery life and run cooler.
but i notice when i'm playing 1080p videos the 9600m gt perform better.
ok, 1080p youtube 9400m no problem at all.
1080p played on vlc 9400m laggy sometimes. but 9600m gt perform well.
1080p played on plex 9400m no problem at all.
that's why i think the new auto switching graphic cards on the new macbook pro is cool.
sometimes i'm on 9600m gt and decide to take the mac to the living area and forget that i was on the dedicated card while using on battery.
I have the Macbook pro 2.66ghz Core2 unibody, with NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT/GeForce 9400M.
Everytime I run a game such as Counter Strike- Source, I get a glitch on my screen when I am running the 9600.
graphic card used in 15" MBP. Performance in digits from here shows that the 9400M is worst than older brother - 8600M GT. Apple wants extra 300$ for "better performance" of 15" MBP.Is it worth it for me? I haven't play any game since 8 years. Now im using 24" 2.8GHz & 20" 2.0GHz iMacs, but i need some easy to carry computer. New MBP will be my main machine for work on apps from adobe (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and once in a year After Effects to make video from vacation).

I got sick of that glossy screen and that's why I've stepped towards the i5 Anti glare.
Anyway I'd simply like to know if I'm about to loose some perf with the new GPU having only 256 Mo VRAM compared to my old 9600 with 512.
Concretely, I'll be playing Starcraft 2 on my MBP's screen, so no external screen and huge resolution.
Do you think it'll be better with the i5 spec ? Same ? Worse ?

View 7 Replies View Relatedanyone has any idea how StarCraft 2, released in a few days, will run on a MacBook Pro with a 9600M GT. I understand this game is largely CPU intensive so I am hoping that for once it will run as well as you'd expect on a less-than-2 year old laptop.
I have seen some footage of the beta running on a MBP 9600M GT, and very nicely at that, so that leaves 2 questions (they may be very difficult to answer):
1) Are we expecting the game to run a lot slower on OS X than XP as games usually do (including WoW)
2) Are we expecting performance to be significantly better in the final over the beta
I am just wondering if the 9600m will be better if I am using a large external monitor or multiple external monitors or will the 9400m be basically the same. The only reason I am not jsut getting the 2.66 version is that I do not want to be tempted to game in college. I will also be getting the employee discount 25% from a friend so the 2.53 will cost about $1720 with tax and applecare and the 2.66 will cost $1920 with tax and applecare. Also I am just wondering for those who do not game or do 3-D editing... how often do you use your 9600m?

Basically, I'm looking for a stable profile or some recommended settings you've been using to overclock your 9600 in bootcamp. Maybe upload a screenshot like the one below with your custom adjusted settings for memory, core, and shader clocks. I'd rather not play around with it if someone has found a fast/safe setting that increases performance.

When they get it back they will send the MBP. In the mean time, i just wanted to know is there anything useful to do when i get it out of the box. For example any app's to download? View 4 Replies View RelatedI like to keep my laptop cool, so I usually run on the integrated 9400 graphics chip. But lately I've been finding myself playing a lot of games on my unibody mbp. However, it gets kind of tedious to have to continually switch over to the "better performance" 9600M option in energy saver. Instead of opening energy saver, clicking "better performance" and then restarting, is there a simple applescript or shortcut I can just double click that will do all this for me? I'd like to just place that script on the desktop and call it "play games" or something." I know it's a small inconvenience, but does anyone have a solution? Or can anyone make a simple automator or applescript to handle this?
View 23 Replies View RelatedMy over 3 year old MacBook Pro Unibody (Late 2008) have a giant problem. The 9600m GT GPU is not working anymore, when booting up with that card the screen flickers and the OS crashes. I have been apple to boot it up with the 9400m GPU, where it works somewhat, no screenflicker, but it does crash alarmingly much as well as giving me a lot of kernel panics. (sometimes it can't boot the OS before freezing, and other times it crash while trying to shutdown the OS).
Since it is over 3 years old, there is no more gaurentee, so my question is:

Well today I was using the screen capture (in Quicktime X) on the 9600M GT and the result every time was that the colour was all screwed (see in attachment) I tried it on the 9400M and the screen capture was fine. I'm wondering if this is specifically a hardware issue or something that software may be able to fix. Currently, I have not ran into any other problems with the 9600M GT. Is this happening to anyone else, or can anyone else test it out to see if it happens to them?

Anyone ever done this? The computer just has a standard VGA output.
I am considering a purchase of a 17" unit. I will probably buy a base unit and then upgrade the memory and possibly the HDD myself (this is largely driven by procurement transaction limits). Is there experience here in adding a SSD to the 17in? I could manage with 256Gb, but have 500Gb drives reached the market yet?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 17" 2.93 UMBP w/ 8GB RAM. I have two X25-Es as boot drives and use an external 1TB Caviar Black as my home folder. I rum virtual machine from the external.
My question is this: is it abnormal for a machine with 8GB of OWC RAM to page out (right now at 2:02 after boot page outs are at 421.5 MB). Usage is moderate (Safari, iTunes and a Parallels VM with 512 MB virtual RAM assigned). I'm thinking my RAM is either crap or defective any constructive.
I recently purchased a unibody macbook pro 2.8Ghz (awesome machine by the way) and was wondering whether would the LED screen get dimmer over time like the previous non unibody models?
When I had my powerbook and non unibody macbook pro, I had a habit of keeping the brightness at full and realize after a while it starts to get dimmer and dimmer. A good fren alerted me to try and keep the brightness at 50% to conserve battery life was wondering do u any of u notice the same dimming occuring on ur UMBP?
I miss my "apple" key. Does anyone make a apple key that would replace the command key on a unibody MBP?

Someone recently posted that Apple changed the display in their UMB after they complained about the washed-out look of the screen. I wonder how difficult it would be to get Apple to agree to a replacement based on the differences between the old and new displays.

View 24 Replies View RelatedI've read all the horror stories about how the mid-09 MBP hard drive firmware update and non-Apple 7200 RPM HDDs don't get along. Most of these seem to be related to the use of a SATA 3.0 drive (which shouldn't matter, since mechanical hard drives can't even make use of the full SATA 1.5, but I digress).
I'm about to buy a new Mac, and, even though the Macbook, which doesn't seem to have these problems, would suit my needs just fine (my camcorder is USB and my digital cameras both use CF), I might spring for the MBP anyway (likely to get the additional 2" of screen space on the low-end 15", which has the closest resolution to what I am used to on my outgoing T60).
Obviously, I could pay Apple to upgrade to one of their 7200 RPM drives, assuming I get the 15". But that seems silly, since I can buy, for less than $100 (i.e., half the upgrade cost from Apple, plus I keep the old drive), a Hitachi Travelstar 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0 drive. My questions are:
1) Has anybody successfully upgraded to such a drive (or its 320 GB little brother, which is otherwise speced the same) in a mid-2009 MBP?
2) If so, did you have to downgrade the firmware as suggested in these forums?
3) If so, did you have to "tweak" the drive in any fashion to make it work?
I just had my i7 15' mbp 15 days ago. today, I just noticed a white stain on the bottom left of the lid (on the back). No matter how many times I tried cleaning it, it is always there. It is visible at low light conditions. Could this be a manufacturing defect?
