MacBook Pro :: GPU (9600m GT) Not Working - Screen Flicker And Crash?
Apr 3, 2012
My over 3 year old MacBook Pro Unibody (Late 2008) have a giant problem. The 9600m GT GPU is not working anymore, when booting up with that card the screen flickers and the OS crashes. I have been apple to boot it up with the 9400m GPU, where it works somewhat, no screenflicker, but it does crash alarmingly much as well as giving me a lot of kernel panics. (sometimes it can't boot the OS before freezing, and other times it crash while trying to shutdown the OS).Â
Since it is over 3 years old, there is no more gaurentee, so my question is:Â

I recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro 15" with a mini displayport, and I decided I would share my LCD monitor with my windows box. The desktop box is connected with DVI and I have connected my Macbook through an HDMI adaptor from Moshi. Everything works very well, and I'm pleased with the quality of the output, but I'm having trouble with a screen flicker in full screen games.
When I select full 1080p (1900x1080) in any full screen game, the screen "shudders." It does not occur on the OS X desktop, and I can only explain it as a shudder. Lines and text shift perceptively left and right, and the game is unplayable. I have experienced this problem in Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, and Half Life: Episode 2 so far.
Could the problem be with my monitor and the way it handles an HDMI signal? The Macbook is flawless otherwise, with no other issues of any kind. The "shudder" only occurs during full screen games set to 1900x1080. Lower resolutions are not effected and work fine...
I'm stumped.
Edit: I should add that I have no other 1080p capable devices to test the output with.

Well today I was using the screen capture (in Quicktime X) on the 9600M GT and the result every time was that the colour was all screwed (see in attachment) I tried it on the 9400M and the screen capture was fine. I'm wondering if this is specifically a hardware issue or something that software may be able to fix. Currently, I have not ran into any other problems with the 9600M GT. Is this happening to anyone else, or can anyone else test it out to see if it happens to them?

I bought a new HDMI adaptor for my 17" Macbook Pro. I'm plugging into a full HD compatible TV, into an HDMI port. The result is a consistant switch between the actual correct display, and colored static. The rate of the switch is dependent on the frequency of the refresh rate, but there's no way to get it anywhere near comfortable to use. I have tried changing resolutions on both sides to no avail. Here is a video of the screen periodically flickering between display and static url...Also have tried other HDMI ports and cables, all of which are known to be in working condition. Tried restarting the tv and computer. Running out of ideas and hair.Troubled Mac User

So I got a new Late 08 MBP 2.8 earlier this week. Everything has been great except that occasionally (once or twice an hour) my laptop screen will go black for about 200-300ms and then come back. Often only the top 1/2 or top 3/4 of the screen will go black. I was worried it was the LCD, but today I switched over to the 9600gt for the first time and the problem seems to have gone away. I generally code all day and havent been doing anything intense when the flickers happen, the CPU/GPU temps are also low.
I have an external monitor hooked up. Ive only noticed the problem when the external monitor was hooked up but then again 90% of the time I use the computer it has the external plugged in.
Also does anyone know if the 9400m's 256mb of memory is shared with the main RAM, ie if I am running on the 9400 do I only have access to about 3.74 gigs of ram?

I have a 13" MBP 2.53GHz, and I absolutely love it. However, I have one issue. I am using an Apple display port to DVI adapter to run the MBP in clamshell mode with my Samsung 221BW monitor. On websites or programs with a dark grey background, the screen flickers. The resolution is set to 1680x1050 (native) and 60Hz.
Does anybody else have this problem? Any ideas as to fixing it?

I don't know if it depends by a latest update I did to Itunes but after an uncertain amount of time my MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz Santa Rosa start to flicker. I have posted a video in youtube [URL] so you can see what happend. For a small amount of time while flickering is started the mouse can move around then it stuck and lock me out of the system. I have to reset many time PVRAM and SMC then it will restart until it lock it down again. It worked flawlessly until yesterday after if I don't remember wrong one or more software update. I use Snow Leopard (official licence). I downloaded the Combo Update for Snow Leopard and ran it. I still have to test it again. Since I need to do some work in the next 48 hours I can't full test it. After the hard reset an image pop out and It won't let me start up the system again ever if I reset many times PVRAM and SMC Then I use bootcamp to "unlock" the MBP. I do run windows under BootCamp. It will run but I can't see anything since the video remain black (I hear the HDD until stop working) Then I push the power down button and I turn off the windows Then after a long time it will log into Snow Leopard! I'm getting crazy the last two days

I've noticed recently that occasionally my screen will intermittently flicker.
It doesn't seem to be tied to anything specific. Just a random black screen flash.

This is my first post on Macrumors and unfortunately it is in regards to a problem that I am currently experiencing with my brand new Macbook Pro 15" w/anti-glare upgrade. I purchased the unit on the 28th May and have used it without problems for until yesterday when I noticed some intermittent flickering in the screen generally a horizontal banding that happens quite sporadically and also changes in brightness levels etc. I checked in with an Apple store earlier today and a staff member at the Genius bar couldn't figure it out either. She tried installing new firmware, but the problem remained and told me that she suspects it is an issue related to the firmware as opposed to hardware. The only advice was to wait it out until Apple addresses the issue with a new firmware upgrade?
I can honestly say I'm not very impressed since this MBP was my supposed long-awaited transition from a lifetime user of PCs to the supposedly more stable/reliable Macs! Just my luck I guess. Nonetheless not a great start to my Mac experience. Anyways, just wanted to see what is the best way to go about it and whether I have the right to demand for an outright replacement (I will be heading off overseas on the 24th June and will definitely need it while away), which may be an issue in itself as I don't think any retailers (I'm located in Sydney) have the 15" w/anti-glare model on hand/stock - mine took over 2 weeks to arrive via a special order. Peoples thoughts? Anyone else experiencing similar issues? Only thing that I could find of relevance were the problems experienced earlier this year with the 27" iMacs.

I am using the pair with an early 2008 Mac Pro octo 2.8. Previous card was a 8800 GT, and previous monitor was a dell 2405WFP. No issue there (other than the 8800's fan noise). With the new setup, I occasionally get a whole screen flicker for a split second, and just now when I woke the display from sleep I got multicolored snow covering the entire screen, like this:
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink
(iphone photo, all I had handy)
Has anyone seen this with either the EVGA card pushing some other dual-link 30" display, or the 3007wfp-hc driven by some other card? I don't really have an easy way to test this myself, as it is pretty intermittent the two arrived around the same time, so I'm not sure which is the cause, but I haven't seen any problems like that in XP so I'm leaning towards the card (drivers, perhaps). I don't spend much time in XP, though, so I'm still not sure.

I bought this machine after selling my old Aluminium MacBook expecting simply better battery and a bit faster, but there's tons of little updates that I'm thoroughly impressed with.
- Unplugging a cord or device from MBP doesn't flicker the screen when in sleep
- Screen "fades" in after sleep instead of instantly popping in
- If I have the screen at lowest brightness, and wake from sleep, before it would flicker full brightness then go to low again, now it stays low
- Backlighting had so much bleed on old MacBook that it was painful to use, it "bled" everywhere. Now it's only the letter of the key and a small rim around the key

In the last 5 days I've started noticing a strange flickering with images loading in Safari both static and in-line video e.g. cnn.com. A few days ago at lunch while home I opened both Safari and Firefox, opened cnn.com and then clicked on a video. With both videos playing at the same time it looked fine in Firefox but flickered in Safari. I've noticed the same issue with static image loads too. In FF the image loads no problem, in Safari it flickers. I don't think this is related to the video card (8800GT) but sounds like a software issue to me.
Anyone else having a similar problem? BTW, I'm running 10.5.2 with all the latest updates. I've subsequently noticed that turning the machine off and on again relieves the problem?

So I was on Windows 7 via Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro and it suddenly gave me a blue screen after starting to watch a youtube video. Â
I use both a Apple Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and after the crash neither of the accessories seem to work anymore on OSX or Windows. What's strange is the hardware is still accessible in the bluetooth menu, it just doesn't function at all. The hardware also turns on still, but the light just blinks and seems like it's not detected.Â
I'm really hoping I didn't mess up the bluetooth in my machine somehow o.O

My monitor has been flickering in all my graphic programs. I'm thinking this has something to do with OSX 10.5.8 and the ATI Radeon 9000 card in my G4 MDD. I've swapped out the ATI card for another of the same quality to see if I get the same problem. The flickering came back. I am now trying out a generic lcd (cornea) to see if the problem occurs.

When resizing the window smaller, they develope a black flicker. Only when doing playback in a smaller window (1/4 of the screensize) they play back normally. Display is a 30",so is my 7300Gs such a useless p.o.s or what is going on?

i bought a used 24" aluminum imac (2008 model) that was about 6 months old, but recently the screen has began to flicker...usually from a half to a full second every few hours or so. it sometimes will flicker if the mac is nudged on either side, but this doesnt always happen, even when i TRY to initiate it. its not really major, but im just worried that the whole display will crap out soon. ive found threads about screen flickering with macbooks and led displays, but nothing for imacs yet. im not sure if this matters, but the person i bought it from opened it up and replaced the hard drive. another contributing factor may be that i constantly run torrents and my mac sometimes stays on for days at a time. it doesnt seem to overheat and ive never had this problem with my other imac (2007 17" white). when im not using it, i keep the disks active, but put the monitor to sleep to prevent burn in. im assuming that since this guy replaced the HD, this would void any warranty, so i think im pretty screwed as far as thats concerned unless i pay out of my own pocket.

Recently i've started to experience my iMac screen flickering for approx 2 seconds, and then turning back on. I was wandering if this was a common problem with this model of iMac (purchased mid-09, 2.66ghz 4gb ram model). I had read of such a problem with the new 27", and in some cases even with the 21.5".
I have only recently begun to use the iMac for relatively graphically-intense tasks, and was wandering if perhaps it could be a dying graphics card (or perhaps it was always faulty, but the lack of intensity of any programs run never pulled it up originally?), or if maybe it was an issue with the LCD?

I have a severely dented 15' G4 that has suddenly developed an all-over screen flicker together with an bleached effect that sometimes makes it impossible to read. The screen itself has for a year or two now been held together with brackets of folded sheet-brass (they clamp like giant binder clips), because both side supports have broken near the hinge. (I've attached a photo of the brackets and the bleached screen, as well as a photo of one of the damaged side supports.) This new surprise is probably due to the laptop's having recently been transported in the same bag as a leaky water bottle. I turned the computer off and let it dry out overnight as soon as the screen started flickering, but I appear to be left with a permanent bleached screen (can't see yellows at all, black appears as light gray) and occasionally (thankfully temporarily) a super-bleached effect where only very thick black writing is legible. I am certain that this is my fault (either from dropping it too many times or from water damage or a combination of the two) but I'm wondering what exactly my options are for possible solutions. Replacing the LCD would be expensive, but a new computer even more so.

For a while now, my iMac has been having somewhat random display glitches, flickers, freezes, and kernel panics that can only be fixed by shutting down the computer. Most of these screen glitches go like this: The display flickers black quickly, letting me know that an issue is going to arise. The issues that could happen are as follows:A blue line glitch (very common)a random artifact glitch (somewhat uncommon)a freeze-up (very common) a kernel panicÂ
There are several types of "display glitches" I've been experiencing. Some of them involve random artifacts that are randomly displayed and seem to be hovering over whatever is going on on the screen–for example, once I was browsing Facebook and the glitch occurred, so a square of my browser screen was sort of cut out and stuck on the screen above everything else going on. The issue wasn't fixed until I restarted the computer. This glitch, however, wouldn't show up in screenshots. These are somewhat less common because it seems if this one happens then it either gets worse very fast and there are random pieces of my active windows all over the screen or it freezes the computer up entirely, or even results in a kernel panic.Â
Another "display glitch" that is far more common is a sort of line glitch. It's very strange: blue lines will outline random shapes and things all over the screen. Pictures on my browser appear distorted and videos look VERY weird. The dock has the lines and random blue pixels as well. The desktop background appears distorted. This glitch often starts with the screen flickering black and the various blue lines appearing. The lines change shape as the objects on the screen move around. The issue doesn't appear in screenshots but I documented it by taking crude videos and pictures on my phone that give examples.
Here's a link to my video of a video about a nonrelated screen glitch. I was actually searching Google for a solution but it turned out to be unhelpful, but since the screen glitch happened to be going on I decided to record it as an example. Notice how the blue lines move with the video...
NOTE: My computer actually JUST screen glitched and froze up completely, at which point I had to shut it down and reboot. Luckily the post was saved! Just in case you were wondering how often these things occur.
This issue is getting worse and worse. I'm not sure what triggers it, but it seems like graphics-intensive programs like 3D games can trigger it–especially, it seems, when I toggle on and off fullscreen. It looks like it could be a graphics card issue, because if it was a software problem it would seem like it should show up in the screenshots. It's sort of an underwhelming graphics card, but meh. My mom is having a panic attack and backing up everything on the computer and we're thinking about just reinstalling OS X altogether.
Here's some general info about the computer:General info: Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac9,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz Number of Processors: 1 Total Number of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 6 MB Memory: 4 GB Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz Graphics and Displays:Chipset Model:NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 Type:GPU Bus:PCIe PCIe Lane

I have a MacBook Pro with the 9600gt in it. Since updating to 10.6.4 this morning 2 times while playing java games i've had the bottom half of my screen go black and most of the top half flicker. I've had to hold in the power button and reset both times. The second time I closed the screen and reopened it, the screen was black but no mouse and nothing moved.
Any advice? Would this be something to do with my graphics card or possibly some error in 10.6.4?Edit:: This is software related to 10.6.4 update and only happens when I open up a java game in a browser.

Finder will flick to blue screen for a split second and restart quitting all open apps. Not restarting the iMac, but just Finder? I've ran Disk Utility and found no problems and also ran a Hardware Test and found no problems. The only indication I have is in Console which without posting the whole log the below lines stand out to me as potential issues:
HIToolbox: received notification of WindowServer event port death.
This line is present numerous times with each application name that was open next to it indicating to me a reason each app has quit? Then a long list of this line repeated;
com.apple.fontd [58544] FODBCheck: foRec->annexNumber != kInvalidAnnexNumber (0)
Followed by:
com.apple.WindowServer[58526] WindowServer[58526] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
This happened once yesterday and a few times today so it's becoming more regular...

My mid 2013 MBP, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16Gb 1600 Mhz DDR with a 500 GB SSD running Mavericks 10.9.3 has, since upgrade to Mavericks, developed a tick. It will occasionally and erratically (some days nothing, sometimes once a day, sometimes twice or more) go black with cursor arrow visible and responsive. (Responsive=it's visible and moves as expected in response to trackpad) The screen comes back after 30-40 seconds or so, but not in response to any keypress or mouse movement that I can detect a pattern for. It just sits there, while I hit escape, spacebar, shift, cmd-option-esc, cmd-option-tab, mouse around, whatever, then comes back. System is fine, don't even get the beach ball. So it's a minor annoyance, except when I'm presenting to a roomful of people who are waiting for my machine to wake up, and that 30 seconds can be FOREVER. Which has happened twice now. When I'm connected to an external screen via thunderbolt that screen is black as well.Â
tried the fix of resetting SMC as well as Safe Mode boot to complete any unfinished OS updates. But the symptom is different, and those fixes haven't worked. I've never had a bad reboot, this condition just seems to pop up without apparent rhyme or reason. It's so infrequent and unpredictable that I despair how long it will take me to run bare and cycle through restoring background apps.

My Macbook Pro crashed in the loading screen of the game and the fans turned on at full screen.Since that happened, I'm hearing the fans more constantly.
