MacBook Pro :: GPU : 9600M @ 512 Versus 330M @ 256
May 28, 2010I currently got a late 2008 MBP with the 9600M with 512 Mo VRAM.
I got sick of that glossy screen and that's why I've stepped towards the i5 Anti glare.
Anyway I'd simply like to know if I'm about to loose some perf with the new GPU having only 256 Mo VRAM compared to my old 9600 with 512.
Concretely, I'll be playing Starcraft 2 on my MBP's screen, so no external screen and huge resolution.
Do you think it'll be better with the i5 spec ? Same ? Worse ?

Dec 2, 2010I have a late 2008 15" MBP with an NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT w/256MB of RAM. I am thinking of trading it for a current 13" MacBook with a GeForce 320M w/256MB.
Am I right in assuming the new MacBook's GPU is inferior to my current's? If so, how much of a hit would I take in games like Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, etc.. ?

Sep 28, 2009I am looking too use Photoshop CS4 and was wondering if it is worth the upgrade to NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 256MB or should I just stick with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M.I am not able too spend any more than the 1999.00 price point so these are my only two options. I need the portability of a laptop otherwise I would go with the iMac. I am sorry if this has been asked before,

Due to this, a lot of people are getting the wrong impression that the 320M is faster than the 8600M GT, and that the 330M is 2x more powerful.There are several consistency issues which need to be addressed: 1) 8600M GT (DDR2) vs 8600M GT (GDDR3)While they both have the same name, there are actually 2 different variants of the 8600M GT card. One with DDR2 memory and one with GDDR3 memory. (Note: this is NOT the same as system memory) The GDDR3 variant is between 20% - 30% faster than the DDR2 variant. Majority of the 8600Ms tested used DDR2 memory, while all the 8600Ms in Apple notebooks use GDDR3 memory.

Apr 15, 2010To start my computer is a early 2008 Penryn MBP with the 2.4 C2D and a 256mb 8600M. Today I was trying to show something on google earth, but once the app started, I could not control the map, it would just freeze. Once I was able to zoom in, but it would not do anything, it would zoom in on pixelated junk. I tried reinstalling it, but no dice. I thought there may be something wrong with how the data is streaming, but it works fine on my hackintosh and my iphone. This got me thinking about the well-known faulty 8600m.
I have, on rare occasions, had some screwy issues with my display, like some pixelation and difficulty getting the display to work after sleeping, but these have been few and far between. I was curious if all this could be related to the GPU, and if there is anything I can do to test before going to the apple store and complaining how my google earth won't work (I am still covered under applecare). I don't game, so I have nothing of that sort to try out on it. I did download and run cinebench, and it gave me an open GL score of ~9.4fps.
MacBook Pro :: 2007 With NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT Repair?
Apr 4, 2012I have a 2007 Macbook A1226 MB896LL/A which is showing all the signs of the GPU problems common to this model. Is apple still repairing them free of charge? Laptop does not chime,the fans are running, nothing on display but you can hear the hard drive chattering, it sort of boots to the point where if you increase/decrease the volume it makes the usual clicking sound, the keyboard backlight comes on if you cover the sensors, it ejects a CD if you press the eject key.

Jul 21, 2009I have a year old MacBook Pro with an Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT card.
I recently bought Unity but it turns out the Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT graphics card isn't fully supported because of a memory leak which is a problem with the drivers.
Unity Support have told me to update my drivers. I understood Mac drivers were always built in to the OS and no drivers were available from Nvidea but I see they now have one Mac driver for another card.
What is the actual state of affairs with this graphics card does anyone know? There have been a lot of reports of faulty ones and now this.
This is a just about year old top of the range MacBook Pro and it doesn't support graphics??
MacBook Pro :: 9600m GT Not Recognised?
Jan 10, 2011My macbook pro 15" wouldn't turn on a couple of days ago but yesterday i turned it on and everything seemed to work. Then i realised that the iSight and bluetooth weren't working. Apart from that it was fine. I then decided i wanted to use windows through bootcamp but when i tried to start it up it just black screened and didn't boot up. I then realised that it might be my graphics card so i went into system profiler and found this. I then tried both the PRAM reset and a SMC reset it didn't fix it. Is there anything else i can do? Or should i just take it to apple?

Dec 28, 2009I have noticed that using 9600m GT causes my mac to run about 20-30 degrees warmer compared to using the 9400m. For instance, when using the 9400m i'd normally get about 45-60 degrees when running firefox and itunes, but when i switch to the 9600m GT and performing the same tasks i get up to about 85 if not 90! I just thought this was a tad perculiar. Anyone with similar experiences / solutions to cooling this thing down (besides using smc which i already have installed).

Feb 19, 2010I have a 2008 MBP with a TON of problems, but out of warranty. Since the logic board is so problematic and Apple is repairing defective MBP's with 8600M's for free, my plan is to ruin the video card so Apple will replace the logic board for free.
So, any suggestions on how to do this?I'm running the OpenCL Benchmarking Tool, I don't know if it's effective or not :P

i used to use only the 9600m gt for gaming as 9400m was handling everything, has better battery life and run cooler.
but i notice when i'm playing 1080p videos the 9600m gt perform better.
ok, 1080p youtube 9400m no problem at all.
1080p played on vlc 9400m laggy sometimes. but 9600m gt perform well.
1080p played on plex 9400m no problem at all.
that's why i think the new auto switching graphic cards on the new macbook pro is cool.
sometimes i'm on 9600m gt and decide to take the mac to the living area and forget that i was on the dedicated card while using on battery.

Jul 14, 2009graphic card used in 15" MBP. Performance in digits from here shows that the 9400M is worst than older brother - 8600M GT. Apple wants extra 300$ for "better performance" of 15" MBP.Is it worth it for me? I haven't play any game since 8 years. Now im using 24" 2.8GHz & 20" 2.0GHz iMacs, but i need some easy to carry computer. New MBP will be my main machine for work on apps from adobe (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and once in a year After Effects to make video from vacation).

Jul 22, 2010anyone has any idea how StarCraft 2, released in a few days, will run on a MacBook Pro with a 9600M GT. I understand this game is largely CPU intensive so I am hoping that for once it will run as well as you'd expect on a less-than-2 year old laptop.
I have seen some footage of the beta running on a MBP 9600M GT, and very nicely at that, so that leaves 2 questions (they may be very difficult to answer):
1) Are we expecting the game to run a lot slower on OS X than XP as games usually do (including WoW)
2) Are we expecting performance to be significantly better in the final over the beta

Jun 21, 2009Just noticed this on my uMBP 17" (the first 17" version), while running XP in Boot Camp.
GPU-Z is reporting that the 9600 M GT is running with only ONE PCI Express lane! NVIDIA control panel is showing the same thing!
Am I seeing things, or is it really only using 1 lane? The chip definitely supports x16.

Jul 17, 2009I am just wondering if the 9600m will be better if I am using a large external monitor or multiple external monitors or will the 9400m be basically the same. The only reason I am not jsut getting the 2.66 version is that I do not want to be tempted to game in college. I will also be getting the employee discount 25% from a friend so the 2.53 will cost about $1720 with tax and applecare and the 2.66 will cost $1920 with tax and applecare. Also I am just wondering for those who do not game or do 3-D editing... how often do you use your 9600m?

Dec 30, 2009I like to keep my laptop cool, so I usually run on the integrated 9400 graphics chip. But lately I've been finding myself playing a lot of games on my unibody mbp. However, it gets kind of tedious to have to continually switch over to the "better performance" 9600M option in energy saver. Instead of opening energy saver, clicking "better performance" and then restarting, is there a simple applescript or shortcut I can just double click that will do all this for me? I'd like to just place that script on the desktop and call it "play games" or something." I know it's a small inconvenience, but does anyone have a solution? Or can anyone make a simple automator or applescript to handle this?

Apr 3, 2012My over 3 year old MacBook Pro Unibody (Late 2008) have a giant problem. The 9600m GT GPU is not working anymore, when booting up with that card the screen flickers and the OS crashes. I have been apple to boot it up with the 9400m GPU, where it works somewhat, no screenflicker, but it does crash alarmingly much as well as giving me a lot of kernel panics. (sometimes it can't boot the OS before freezing, and other times it crash while trying to shutdown the OS).
Since it is over 3 years old, there is no more gaurentee, so my question is:

MacBook Pro :: 9600M GT Screen Capture In Quicktime X - Colors Screwed
Dec 12, 2009Well today I was using the screen capture (in Quicktime X) on the 9600M GT and the result every time was that the colour was all screwed (see in attachment) I tried it on the 9400M and the screen capture was fine. I'm wondering if this is specifically a hardware issue or something that software may be able to fix. Currently, I have not ran into any other problems with the 9600M GT. Is this happening to anyone else, or can anyone else test it out to see if it happens to them?

Nov 2, 2009I'm looking for a new monitor to go with my MBP, and I'm stuck trying to choose between the ones listed above.
The 2407WFP is a couple of years old now I guess, but it's the rev A04 version, which supposedly fixed the (few) problems with what was otherwise meant to be a great screen. It's an sPVA screen.
I've heard good reviews of the G2410, with its LED backlighting. It's still a TN panel and I hear so much bad stuff about them.
The 2209WA is an eIPS panel which I like the sound of, but it's smaller and lower resolution.
The F2380 is a cPVA panel, the image quality looks better but I've heard bad things about blacks on this panel.
