my trackpad is frozen and I also could not get force quit to work, I closed the top down and now I cannot get past the login and the cursor will not move, does anyone have any ideas

Ive ran multiple different types of terminal searches for this "flashback" Trojan worm/virus that's going around. I've also searched for com.apple.systempreference.plist and it's not in there at all. I've done safe mode and everything else. I do not have a wallpaper HD lite, I am OUT of options, and I really don't want to have to re install Lion. Can someone PLEASE tell me something, other than those options?

Is there any way to go about dealing with an application that has frozen (or results in the spinning of the 'beachball of death')...and then to top things off, decides to prevent you from force-quitting it as well!! Not being able to force-quit a stuck App is a major problem, because it means that I can then not log-out, restart or shutdown my computer...inevitably, my only option is to hold down the power button on my machine to force-shutdown!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm getting rather panicky now. I was trying to connect to a network drive on my MacBook when I got a beachball. Nothing would work, not even force quit would come up. So I held down the power button until it went off, and then switched it back on again. It got as far a blank blue screen but no further. I tried it again and this time it didn't get past the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel.So I took the battery out, unplugged from the mains and held the power button down for over 10 seconds. Then held down Command Alt P R to reset the PRAM. That didn't solve anything.This is the first reboot since some security updates on Saturday past. I'm running Leopard and it's an oldish Macbook, Core 2 Duo with 2 x 2 GB sticks of RAM.

Since Tiger and even more so with Leopard, I have found the 'Force Quit' command to be a pointless white elephant.
When the spinning beachball hits it tends to make the application unresponsive and then spread to all other apps. Attempting to bring up the force quit function is equally fruitless. Of course, by the time it eventually pops up, the offending application has either quit itself (I'm looking at you Adobe CS4) or has become responsive again (I'm looking at you Safari).
Has anyone noticed any improvement in Snow Leopards?
When I try to use this command I am sent to front row. I can force quit throught the apple menu. This began when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.

I was trying to open Printer Pro but it doesn't show up in the finder and when I tried to put it in the trash it says it can't throw it away because it's open. Say an app has crashed and I then bring up the force quit dialog. I then select the app I want to kill, and press the force quit button. Now as the little popup that says "Are you sure you want to force quit" is coming down, my machine freezes. This has happened 3 times exactly the same way. Other than that, the machine is smooth as clockwork. I'm kinda thinking there is some sort of GFX card bug or something?

So I was on stick am yesterday and safari started to bog down, then I couldn't scroll or click on anything at all. So I proceeded to go to force quit menu and the cursor froze. I'm new to mac so i'm upset. Do macs freeze often? If its safaris fault doesn't that mean that the OS shouldn't crash anyway

This time however (this has been happening for almost a week) my computer has been very slow and unresponsive. Programs quit due to "errors" and i have to force quit everything. I just bought a Macbook Pro. When using safari, it freezes at least once a day to a point I can't force quit, and had to do a hard shut down. I've figured out that if I am using my computer and safari for more than a couple of hours, Safari just freezes. An apple support representative did mention that laptops were not meant to be constantly on, so I have been shutting it down when not in use. Still, I shouldn't have to shut down after an hour just to keep Safari from freezing.
Does this sound normal? Is there an easy fix? Do I need to look at getting this computer replaced? Or should I download a better web browser?
I'm also new to Mac, and thought switching from a windows would mean better reliability. So far I have been unimpressed with my computer. I just want it to work without worrying about having to force it to shut down once a day.

I have an old "vintage" Macbook with Tiger as my OS. I have all sorts of sleep issues with it, and recently after accidentally hitting the sleep button, I had to force quit the machine by holding down the power button because it was just (beachball) spinning when I tried to start it up again.
I went to start it up and I get the gray screen with the apple on it and the spinning "clock hands" this goes on until I get a darker screen without apple and more spinning. It stays there. We've tried a host of solutions including the resetting through battery removal, we've tried to "archive and reinstall", etc.

I pressed the play button (F8) on my mac book pro yesterday. Iphoto began playing a fullscreen slideshow that I was not able to stop by any means. Has anyone else noticed that the trackpad button requires more force towards the top (it is harder to push closer to the section that is near the space bar)? It seems to still work at the top but I have to push down really hard on it.

Sometimes while using computer, the entire keyboard and trackpad suddenly go completely unresponsive and I can't do anything. The only button that works is the power button. It's so annoying because I have to do an emergency shutdown and I hate doing that. Is there any relief?

I can't quit the update and I tried restarting it but every time I try it says to try later because the update is running. So I have tried letting the battery die thinking that would restart it but when it started back up again the update was still stuck. The loading bar is still up there and is solid not moving strips. I purchased a new IMac Intel version and I am having a problem with AOL. I have always had a problem with AOL and my Macs (now on number 3). In the past, if I left AOL running it would not allow the Macs to close down without Force Quitting from AOL and AOL would not quit normally. With the new Mac, if I use AOL it won't quit and when I Force Quit it disconnects the Mac from the internet and I have to restart. As I live in Antigua both Apple and AOL have been useless at trying to solve the problem.
