Aug 12, 2009I can no longer shut my Mac down any more. Mail wont quit and now I must do a Force Quit through Activity Monitor.

OS X :: Process NOT Quit Via Activity Monitor
Nov 26, 2010A while back I installed an application that allowed me to stream media from my Mac to my PS3, called Gridcast. It didn't work well, so I got rid of it. Since then I have had two processes constantly running, "gridcastd" & "GridCastAlerts." When i select and quit the processes nothing happens, they just continues to run.

May 7, 2012I am running Mac OSX 10.7.3 and I recently been having issues shutting down my computer with mail running. Sometimes it takes 2-3 mins for it to shut mail down and other times it says it couldn't shut down because of the mail app. Is there anything I can do short of reinstalling Lion?

Mar 9, 2005My Mail has worked since the beginning, but yesterday it stopped fetching incoming mails. I can send mails, but not receive! The clock keeps on spinning and says "fetching new mail" My server ports is set to 25 and 110 as default. When I try to quit Mail, it dosen't. I have to force-quit Mail to close it.

Mar 28, 2012Every time I want to shut down my late 2011 MacBook Pro, Mac Mail cancels the shut down & I have to force quit mail. I was having this problem on my old 2008 MacBook before I upgraded to the Pro (but it only started after I upgraded to Lion OSX). So what's wrong w/ Mac Mail? And is there some setting I can change? This is an annoying time suck.Â

Apr 25, 2009I just set up my new iMac, migrated everything from my MacBook Pro, and everything works EXCEPT Mail. I have configured my MobileMe settings to synch everything, and online, everything is there: contacts, all old email, etc... but Mail doesn't show any of this stuff, nor will it retrieve or synch any of my email accounts. Also, I have to Force Quit it everytime to exit the program.
Could this be something with the Preferences file, or .plist file?

Sep 5, 2014How do I close an application that won't quit and doesn't show up in the force quit dialogue box? I was trying to open Printer Pro but it doesn't show up in the finder and when I tried to put it in the trash it says it can't throw it away because it's open. The forced quit dialogue box does not list it as open. What do I do?

Sep 13, 2010Say an app has crashed and I then bring up the force quit dialog. I then select the app I want to kill, and press the force quit button. Now as the little popup that says "Are you sure you want to force quit" is coming down, my machine freezes. This has happened 3 times exactly the same way. Other than that, the machine is smooth as clockwork. I'm kinda thinking there is some sort of GFX card bug or something?

Mar 21, 2010I'm getting rather panicky now. I was trying to connect to a network drive on my MacBook when I got a beachball. Nothing would work, not even force quit would come up. So I held down the power button until it went off, and then switched it back on again. It got as far a blank blue screen but no further. I tried it again and this time it didn't get past the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel.So I took the battery out, unplugged from the mains and held the power button down for over 10 seconds. Then held down Command Alt P R to reset the PRAM. That didn't solve anything.This is the first reboot since some security updates on Saturday past. I'm running Leopard and it's an oldish Macbook, Core 2 Duo with 2 x 2 GB sticks of RAM.

This time however (this has been happening for almost a week) my computer has been very slow and unresponsive. Programs quit due to "errors" and i have to force quit everything. MacBook Pro :: Safari Freezes After Several Hours Of Use - Cannot Force Quit
Sep 1, 2014I just bought a Macbook Pro. When using safari, it freezes at least once a day to a point I can't force quit, and had to do a hard shut down. I've figured out that if I am using my computer and safari for more than a couple of hours, Safari just freezes. An apple support representative did mention that laptops were not meant to be constantly on, so I have been shutting it down when not in use. Still, I shouldn't have to shut down after an hour just to keep Safari from freezing. Â
Does this sound normal? Is there an easy fix? Do I need to look at getting this computer replaced? Or should I download a better web browser?Â
I'm also new to Mac, and thought switching from a windows would mean better reliability. So far I have been unimpressed with my computer. I just want it to work without worrying about having to force it to shut down once a day.Â

Feb 6, 2012I have an old "vintage" Macbook with Tiger as my OS. I have all sorts of sleep issues with it, and recently after accidentally hitting the sleep button, I had to force quit the machine by holding down the power button because it was just (beachball) spinning when I tried to start it up again.Â
I went to start it up and I get the gray screen with the apple on it and the spinning "clock hands" this goes on until I get a darker screen without apple and more spinning. It stays there. We've tried a host of solutions including the resetting through battery removal, we've tried to "archive and reinstall", etc.

Mar 19, 2012I pressed the play button (F8) on my mac book pro yesterday. Iphoto began playing a fullscreen slideshow that I was not able to stop by any means. I hit the key for force quit and it appeared on the screen but was not able to be clicked. I pressed the power button for 5 seconds then for the first time ever on macbook pro that was so expensive.. Jan 31, 2010I have a G4 powerbook with an LCD that only displays the top 25% of the screen. I've been using an external monitor with it just fine. Today, I reinstalled the OS and ran into a problem. The main OSX startup menu (you know, where it asks for your location, timezone, personal info, etc) is prompting me for information, and I can't see the forms to fill them in! The external monitor defaults to "extended" as opposed to "mirrored", and the forms are embedded, meaning I can't drag them over to my external monitor. Obviously, if I can't fill out these forms and get to the desktop, the laptop is completely useless.
Does anyone know how to force the external monitor to be "mirrored" from startup? Is there a keycommand?

MacBook Pro :: Activity Monitor And Console Won't Open?
Apr 10, 2012I knew everything was working fine on my Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz i5, 8gb ram, Mac OS X Version 10.7.3. I loaded up my Mac this morning and tried to open Activity Monitor but wont open. When I drag the application to the dock, there is no icon picture for it. I looked on the internet and it told me to load up Console, which I then found done the same thing.
In Utilities I realised the App 'Podcast Capture' was also missing its icon, but since I do not use that, I am not worried. After looking through google again, I ended up using FirstAid and repaired the disk and permissions. That still made no difference. Finally I then decided I could delete the .plist from preferences, to then find neither of the files for Console and Activity Monitor were there? And I had not deleted them.
Once last thing, in Terminal, every time I open it, it comes up with, bash: /usr/libexec/path_helper: Unknown error: -22
Not sure if this relates to it in anyway? The only thing I know that may have effected it was setting up a Minecraft server which I had to use a chmod a+x (file location). Which I thought gave it the commands. Didn't work anyway, but whilst in the middle of doing that I realised all these other issues.

Apr 8, 2012Ive ran multiple different types of terminal searches for this "flashback" Trojan worm/virus that's going around. I've also searched for com.apple.systempreference.plist and it's not in there at all. I've done safe mode and everything else. I do not have a wallpaper HD lite, I am OUT of options, and I really don't want to have to re install Lion. Can someone PLEASE tell me something, other than those options?
