I've recently been having a LOT of problems with my MBP freezing. I was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems? I'm running a early 2008 MBP with OSX 10.5.7. I use time machine and have bootcamp installed too.
View 9 RepliesTo preface this, this is my friends macbook and I'm very unfamiliar with how they work. However, she had dropped her laptop off her bed (i'm not sure how bad of fall it was) , suffice it to say her screen broke and she asked me to fix it. This turned out to be a fairly routine job, save for the hinge that is a total pain to get back on.
On starting the macbook up, the screen/camera work fine but it is moving at a terribly slow rate. I timed it and it took 3 minutes to get to the login screen, 30 seconds to log in and another 2 minutes for her desktop to load. Once loaded, the applications take forever to start, lag terribly and some crash automatically (safari, ichat) despite being connected to network. On top of this, I have tried restarting/shutting down the computer but this freezes and will show the "thinking circle" for an infinite amount of time.
I have tried the disk utility, and it fails to verify the disk. I'm not sure what else to try, as I am unfamiliar with macs. I fear though, that she damaged her hard drive when it dropped, although once again I'm not sure.
i need help with my macbook. I just updated the Leopard 10.5.7 and something is up with my machine.It has randomly been hanging and freeze my mac by telling me i have to restart the computer. Its happened about 5 times now!
I tried repairing permissions but everytime it does i have something that cannot be repaired for some reason. Could someone tell me what is happening and why my permissions arn't being repaired...
My white MB is too new to freeze up. Yes, it's been 3 days, my MB keeps freezing up when I'm surfing via firefox and/or safari. Everything freezes up, I mean everything. I have to power off. In the last 10 min, it freezes twice already. Also, the trackpad seems to move slower & not very smooth. I just installed 4GB 800MHz RAM (it recognizes as 800MHz).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought my mac refurbished from apple about a month ago. My mac started freezing up completely. about 6 times a day. There was no damage done by me. No new programs had even been installed. I took it into the apple store and they sent it in to be repaired. I got it back a day ago and the same problem started happening again. Now it wont even boot up without freezing. My question is where do I go from here? do i take it in again? i shouldn't have to wait and keep on sending it out..or should I call apple care and request a new computer?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy early-2010 i7 MBP keeps freezing within minutes of boot. I just tried booting in safe mode, and it just froze for the 6th time in 24hrs (like the 4th in a row). I've never performed a time machine backup with this computer (I got it about a month ago), so a full restore would be an absolute last ditch option. Like I said, this keeps happening within a minute of boot. The screen is on, but everything completely locks up. The cursor can't be moved, keyboard doesn't do anything, etc. I have to keep forcing it to shut off w/ the power button.

I think I have messed up something with Audio Midi Setup and now its not even displaying the computers speakers on audio output...Also everytime i go to system preferences it freezes when i click sound.

My dad bought a macbook pro a few days ago and he deleted some things; iphoto and photobooth to name a few. I told him to go to system preferences and he gets an error message saying something about 'system preferences may be damaged' And it does not open. Is there a way to fix this? He has the snow leopard installation disks etc.

Using Safari, surfing, my computer froze. I had to manually restart.
Since then, my computer has repeatedly frozen, getting the "grey shroud" with the message that machine needs to be manually turned off/on.
I went to go change my desktop background, and every time i open system preferences I get the pin wheel. System preferences opens up in the desktop/screensaver section, but automatically gives me the pin wheel. How can i fix this?

I have a MacBook that is running leopard. After running a volume repair that failed I tried to restart my laptop, but when it gets to the blue loading screen, it takes forever and then shuts off. I can still run the Mac os x installer. When I go to disk utility, the Macintosh hd tab is visible, whereas it wasn't available before. Okay scratch that it isn't available anymore. Though, I just clicked on startup disk and it is visible there.

I am a Mac veteran and should know better but I went brain dead and rebooted system after an update while the repair permissions function was running in the background. Now my IMac will reboot and then start to load once I login but it hangs on the startup screen only showing my mouse arrow and the standard space startup background. It won't get to my desktop. Am I going to have to reinstall the system? I have everything backed up on Time Machine but I can't access it from this position. I have a project I have to finish tonight and now I'm really screwed if I can't get in it.

Last night I attempted to change my desktop picture and thought I'd scroll through my own photos to choose one. When I got one in particular, it obviously changed the picture, then I couldn't change it back again. All I got was the spinning beach ball. After a force quit, I went back, started up System Prefs and immediately the ball started spinning again. Tried this a couple more times - same result. I shut down the Mac and started up again this morning - still the same. System Prefs always opens on the 'Desktop/Screen Saver' option and the ball appears and spins, neccessitating the 'force quit' option again. (running 10.7.4)Â

I have an iMac OS X 10.5 or 6? that was not getting past the apple logo and spinning gear, so I started from install disks, selected Disk Utility, and got the following messages. The lines in Caps were red

I don't know where to go from here! Please help, I'm not Mac savy, so any suggestions need to be specific.
My Power Mac froze, and won't boot. I'm running 10.4. No recent changes, downloads, or updates. Safe mode won't work. freezes on grey start up screen. System CD in drive, won't boot from holding down "c" held down option and selected CD and finally got to disk utility.
Now, when I try to run utility to repair permissions, I get an error stating "disk utility has lost its connection with the disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch disk utility" happens over and over.
When I try to repair disk, I get a red line saying "reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect date, keys out of order. The volume could not be repaired". Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972). 1 volume could not be repaired.

For no reason, suddenly when I start up my Mac, it has the following warning:
"OSX can't repair the disk "Ryan ManUtd". "You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to the files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
What does this means ? Why it suddenly appeared ? So, I tried to check my Harddidk by doing a Verify.Â
So I went to Utilities, select the Harddisk, and then click VERIFY. Then I the following message pops out:
"Disk Utility stopped verifying "Ryan ManUtd"Â
(note: Ryan ManUtd is the name of my harddisk)Â Then it the window panel, there is a message which says:
"Error: Live file System repair is not supported"Â
What does this mean ? Other than that, I can still access the contents in my harddisk ...Â

I run a dual 2 GHz G5 PPC (OS 10.4.10) - for the past 4-5 months I've been getting freeze ups for no apparent reason. These nearly always happen around the same time in the evening (around 11 pm) - although not every evening - probably 2/3 times a week. They can happen whether there is any activity on the computer or not. There is never anything on the console log at the time of the freeze up. I'm putting off an archive and install - though I've tried everything else - Disk First aid, Disk Warrior, permissions, fsck, cache cleaning, font checking, Memcheck, re-booting in safe mode, re-applying combo update, resetting the PRAM etc. - I've even tried replacing my secondary hard drive. I've also tried watching the Activity monitor around the problem time - unfortunately this is when it decides not to happen.
The Mac appears to run ok during the day (usually on by 7.30am) One other slightly odd thing is that sometimes at boot up a warning screen will appear and vanish in a 'nanosecond' - I think it could be the device removal warning -though nothing apart from my two internal drives may be connected. I also get this in the start up log 'family specific matching fails' on a number of usb items. Hope someone can help I'm running out of ideas.

I've been experiencing some weird problems on my Mac Pro for the last few days. It's a Xeon quad 2.8, 6GB memory and running 10.5.6, never had any problems with it before. So the problems I'm having is that some system applications becomes unresponsive (freeze and fun beach ball spinning). In most cases I'm not able to force quit the frozen apps either. Also, in the dock it says "Application Not Responding" when I right click on them (like it should), but when I check the "Force Quit Applications" window there is no such text (there should be some red text after the application name if I'm not mistaken).
These are the apps that has frozen the last few days: System preferences, Disk Utility, System Profiler, Software Update, the main menu has also frozen at times.
When I try to shut down the Mac Pro it quits all the applications as usual, but then just stops and shows the wallpaper and nothing else (so I have to use the power button on Mac Pro itself to completely shut it down. When I want to put my Mac to sleep it takes way longer than usual as well. Today after I had been away for a while I came back to see the screen saver active, but in my Energy settings I've set it to shut down the displays before the screen saver would activate � so I have no idea why the screen saver was on...
I have locked my System Preferences (with the little lock in the lower left) but when I click on the lock it just says "Authorizing..." next to it and System Preferences freezes (no password window pops up).
I'm lost. I can't for the life of me figure out what could be wrong. I've used Repaired Permissions without any luck. (There was some error messages, but now I can't even open up Disk Utility again without it freezing directly at start up.)
All I can think about is that something I've installed would have messed something up, not sure. The last days I've installed: Grammarian Pro X (trial), iWork '09 (retail) and Handbreak. (and I've updated other software like Adium, but I doubt that's the problem)
My cursor is freezing up on me when I let my macbook sit for 2-3 minutes. As long as Im working I have no problem. Its only when I step away from it for a couple of minutes. When this happens my only option is to force quit in order to get out.
View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday I was using a program that was creating a disk image file on my second hard disk. The application froze and crashed, leaving a tiny img file. Whenever I try to delete this file (through finder, or command line) or the machine tries to index/backup the file etc the whole computer freezes and I have to do a hard shutdown.Â
I have tried repairing the disk but disk utility says there is nothing wrong. I also tried mounting it on another machine via firewire, the exact same thing happened, the second machine froze up when I tried to delete the file.Â

I decided to restore to a Time Machine backup I had done a few days earlier, hoping that I would just "start" fresh. Without realizing it, I had inserted the Leopard install dvd that came with my computer, and restored to my 10.6.6 backup. I got the "You must restart your computer" error, which I found out was a result of using the Leopard disk. So, I redid the restore using a Snow Leopard installer on USB.
After this, everything appeared to be working fairly well. However, today, I've started to get system crashes quite frequently, and at times I haven't been able to properly shut down or restart. I noticed that Spotlight was indexing, and would hang at "3 hours remaining" or "estimating time left." Right now, I have created a second admin account, and I have disabled indexing. It seems to be working, at least temporarily, because I'm using it right now.
All of my music is on an external hard drive connected via USB. It is now showing that instead of having 80+gb of data there is zero and now a file that says USBC and some other characters. I tried running disk utility and it said "filesystem verify or repair failed". Music folders and files disappeared from external hard drive now showing USBc file.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy MBP recently had a bunch of problems with the logic board and speakers. I brought it into the Apple Store (on Monday) and they gave me the option of them sending it into a repair center, or them repairing it locally in store. I requested that they sent out just because I was curious to see how long it would take. To my surprise, my MBP arrived, fixed and as good as new on my doorstep today. That's amazingly fast for sending it out to a offsite repair center. The repair center is in Philadelphia. I live in Maine. You do the math. When I've had things repaired locally in the Apple Store it's taken weeks to repair instead of days because they need to order the parts.
Anyways, the point of this thread was to suggest to people that they choose the offsite repair option. It's amazingly fast, and it saved me a trip to the Apple Store (they shipped my MBP directly to my house).
I ran a disk check on my MacBook Pro which told me to run disk repair. Since this was my boot HD, I took out my Installation DVD, put it into the running system and started the installation file then selected that I wanted to reboot and start utilities. The system then rebooted, the "chime" came, and then, silence, gray screen with apple logo, nothing is happening. What do I need to do, to get further and repair my hard disk?

While trying to pepair permissions systom freeze up. So I put in the startup disk hit restrat holding down c and tried to repair permissions that way and it froze up that way too. I had to manually turn off machine.
