MacBook Pro :: Lion Trash Won't Open
Apr 23, 2012
When I click on the Trash Can nothing happens. I was in it recently recovering a deleted document. Don't know where the trash caan is stored so I cannot find it manually. New MAC user. Also, having endless hangs and crashes trying to reorganize my 1.3TB of data stored on Seagate external drives.

An icon appeared on my wife's Macbook Air desktop and she has no idea where it came from, what it is or how to get rid of it. It has a red and white "pdf" icon with the title Acr790289319801612880.tmp. Nothing happens when it's double clicked, or if she tries to open it under "File" then "Open." I changed the extension to .pdf and tried to open it, but no dice. If she drags it into the trash it makes the sound effect of dropping into the can but remains on the desktop and doesn't show up in the trash. How to get rid of it?

I've got a latest-gen MacBook Pro running on a fully-updated OSX Lion (last update check April 25, 2012).
For some time now, the Trash hasn't seemed to respond: when I click the Trash icon in the Dock, nothing happens (no window opens). When I right-click on it it shows me the normal menu, but when I click "Open", nothing happens; when I click "Empty Trash" nothing happens either (no progress bar even though the Trash must be rather full by now, no sound, the icon remains "full").
Besides, when I close my MacBook Pro with iTunes running (even though no song is playing), when I open the Mac, it sometimes happens that the Finder stops responding. It usually goes back to normal if I quit iTunes.

Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X?Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least. Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that.

After updating to 10.7.3 I have noticed that Disk Utility no longer opens. It pops up into the utility bar for a few seconds, bobs up and down a couple of times, then disappears. The next time I click on Disk Utility I don't even get that much of a response. It just doesn't open. No error report, no pop ups saying that it can't be opened - Nada. I can't use disk utility AT ALL anymore. I've tried Zapping my PRAM, but that's about it.
The other thing I've noticed is that any time I put something into the Trash Bin it automatically tells me that it will delete the item - it doesn't sit in the trash bin like it used to until you manually delete it. The only time I can get it to behave normally is when I am using an external drive and I put something from the external drive into the trash bin.

Sometimes items it put in the trash don't appear in the trash, although they are there. This often happens when I manually delete podcasts from iTunes, or drag an item such as a PDF from my downloads folder to the trash. The dock icon remains in it's "empty" state and bring up the trash finder window also shows that it is empty. If I restart my MacBook however, the items appear in the trash and are able to be deleted.

I'm finding myself using spotlight for just about everything. One thing I've found that spotlight does not want to do by default, is open the trash folder.
Tried making a symbolic link of the ~/.Trash folder to the desktop, but spotlight could not find it.
So next I made a script to tell finder to open the trash folder, and saved it in my user directory. I name the script "trash", so now when I type "trash" in spotlight, it finds the script, which in turns tells finder to open the trash folder.

you can rename, move or even trash a file when you still have it opened in preview or textedit. In win, such action will be stopped by the message "can't do that, the file is open somewhere". Would that data going to be kind of homeless or become a "ghost"?

How do you delete individual items from Trash without emptying entire Trash? If I highlight one item in Trash, the only option is the Empty button. I'm afraid it will empty the whole thing. I don't want to do that.

I just got my new macbook pro today , and when I plugged in my toshiba portable external HDD, the computer put every (or what appears to be every) file in the trash bin. Strangely, the files are still on the HDD and the files disappear when I eject it. I reconnected the hard drive multiple times and the problem still persists. I cannot find one logical explanation as to why this is happening.

I just upgraded to Lion 10.7.4 and am having troubles with emptying the Trash. The dialog box opens and shows the number of items to be deleted, and the blue candy cane starts. Nothing happens - no progress bar appears. If I click on the X to stop the process, it says "Stopping" but again nothing happens. I've left it overnight and nothing changes. Restarting the machine sometimes works, but often I can't restart because "Another process in in use". Only by Force Quitting the FInder will it restart.

Cleaned up my MacBook Pro yesterday, put a lot of files in the bin. After (ish) 400 delted files the "process bar" of how much as been deleted did not move anymore. I could not abort the emptying so I had to restart the Finder. The 400 files were gone out of the bin but those files which are now still in there can simply not be deleted. Every time I try to klick "empty trash" my computer gets stuck at "preparying to emtpy trash"
I have loged out, restarted and also tried "secure empty trash" ..... all of it did not work.Every time I want to cancel the emptying it does not react and I have to restart the Finder. Yesterday the Finder even didnt restart once so I had to restart the entire system. Is there anything I can still do? Pretty unhappy witht he situation and hope all these bugs which were in the Lion update will get fixed with Mountain Lion!
