I have two folders in my trash which I cannot empty. No matter how many times I try these folders will not go away. I have open the "info" link and marked them read and write without success.

I have a folder over 1 GB (in my HDD), with Windows Executable files; along with .dmg's, a video, and a few text files. For some reason, the files just do not want to erase themselves. I've tried a Secure Empty of the trash can; I've tried entering a sudo comain in Terminal, but it won't let me enter my password; I've tried dragging into Shredder, on MacKeeper, but it takes forever to in there, so I end up giving up.

Suddenly Finder keeps asking me to input my password whenever I delete a file to the trash. Emptying the trash is fine, though.I thought maybe I had clicked an option in Onyx that caused this, but having looked several times, I can't see anything in Onyx that would cause this.I've tried repairing disk permissions using Disk Utility, with no effect.

I have a little problem in that i wished to delete things from my time machine to make room (thats before i realised it did it anyway when it was full)the only way i found to do it was to empty to trash that was the only option that was given to me now it is in the trash it will not delete, i have read articles on here but they do not seem to work so wondered if anyone has managed to do this as i have over 23000 files in the trash that will not delete my local apple shop suggested deleting the time machine but the only option i get is to send to trash which i am reluctant to do
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am completely lost on what has happened to my computer. I have 900,007 photos in iphoto trash I am unable to delete. Each time I try I get a notice from apple. They are not my photos they are stuff from the internet I do not want and I do not know how they got there.
Info:
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4), had the computer since september.
my DELETE functionality within finder is not working consistently anymore. I am only seeing this issue on my new MAC BOOK AIR (used for work and received just last week), and not on my macmini (that is also running Lion and I've had for a year).
Basically, I am having problems deleting files using CMD + DELETE. I hit this command and get the typically apple "ping" sound for a something that isn't working, however I can right click and hit MOVE TO TRASH and it goes immediately, which means it's definitely not a file permission/in-use/lockout issue.
I feel like I did something stupid to cause this, but it only doesn't work occasionally. I have noticed it moreso right after I open or have used a file, but while CMD+DEL doesn't work, the MOVE TO TRASH does, so i'm lost.
extremely frustrated and I've been through my System Pref settings alot in case I turned something off.

How do you delete individual items from Trash without emptying entire Trash? If I highlight one item in Trash, the only option is the Empty button. I'm afraid it will empty the whole thing. I don't want to do that.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI dual boot my iMac using Boot Camp and I'm having problems deleting a bunch of files in my Trash. A short history. I purchased a OWC external hard drive case and I've been going through my old hard drives which originally were used in my Windows XP computer. The drives were contaminated with Windows viruses and so I installed the drives one by one in the OWC case and proceeded to delete files and programs which I didn't need in each drive while in OS X and keeping the files I wanted to save in each respective drive. Now what I'm faced with is a Trash bin filled with Windows XP software (including Windows XP itself) which I cannot delete because OS X says I don't have permission to delete those files.

You can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash?

Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X?Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least. Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that.

I was cleaning up my jumpdrive and accidently put a locked safegaurd file in the trash so when I went to empty the trash it emptied everything but that. Then I went in and moved a copy of the safegaurd file from the trash to the desktop then to the jumpdrive. Now the file is safely back on my jumpdrive, but I have useless files in my trash that I can't delete. How do I do it??
Anyone know what I can do?
I have this file that has appeared in my trash bin, this file stays there when I empty the trash. The icon shows full. When I try to "get info" on the file, nothing happens. I drag it out onto the desktop, and it disappears.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have tried everything and I cannot delete this folder from my trash. It's an empty folder because everything inside it is already deleted. I get this message when I try to empty trash.
"The operation cannot be completed because the item "xxx" is in use."
I have tried going into Terminal and typing "sudo rm -rf" etc etc. Get the message "directory not empty".
Tried secure empty trash.
Tried using Cocktail.
Tried using Permanent Eraser.
Tried holding down "option" and emptying.
Tried logging out, logging in then emptying. Tried restarting and emptying.
Nothing seems to work. I've looked through every thread on every forum I could find on google. I can move the folder back to my desktop. I can rename it. It's not locked or anything. Also, I tried emptying it in safe mode, but I can't seem to start up on safe mode!!! I turn off the computer, turn it on, hold down shift after I hear the startup noise, release shift when the grey apple logo comes up, and then it just shuts down on me. I can't boot up on safe mode!! It's so weird!
I'm gonna try repairing disk permissions, but before I do.
I'm on a PowerBook G4. Running Version 10.4.11. Everything is up to date.
I'm trying to empty my trash bin..
But this pops up,
I don't think it's in use..
PS. A question I have about gaming on my iMac LINK
There is a certain file in my trash bin that won't delete, I don't believe it is locked or anything, it just says, "The operation cant be completed because the item sixtyforce is in use."
"sixtyforce" was this emulator that I downloaded, but it was the older version of it, so I wanted to delete it, but that message keeps coming up.
Im using a MacBook with OS X 10.6.2 and a Maxtor 1Tb External hdd.
I was running out of space on my External hdd, so decided to turn off time machine and delete all the backups and then do one latest backup and turn it off again, so i turned off time machine and deleted all the backups from the external hdd into the Trash.
I went to deleted the trash and after it prepared to delete some 48,000 files it came up with an error message saying:
"The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)."
So i researched this, tried a secure empty trash also held down the Option key and emptied the trash and also tried various different Terminal codes (I am nowhere at all competent with Terminal so i was probably doing it wrong).
I've also gone back into time machine and deleted any other backups from with time machine.
None of these have worked, and i have movies, music etc also on the external hdd so a re-format is out of the question.
I've been organizing some files on my external hard drive and after I had all the files where I wanted, I had to delete all the individual folders that they were in. They are all aliases which is really weird and I have no idea what happened. When I try to empty trash nothing happens, no pop up or anything tell me what's wrong. When I tried to secure empty trash I get this

I was in the process of deleting Bioshock from a Windows fat32 drive while in OS X on my January 2008 Mac pro when it was unable to do so due permissions on some of the files and folder, so I just placed the whole bioshock folder back on the fat32 formatted drive, however ever since there has been a file in Trash labeled ␀␀␀␀␀. that wont be emptied, I do not receive a error message when I try to empty it, it just remains in there.
I am unable to use the get info right click option as when I do so the ␀␀␀␀␀. file vanishes for a few minutes and then just reappears in the Trash.
I am unable to move the file any where as when I try to do so it is as if I have not clicked on anything and the os does not acknowledge that anything has occurred.
Something happened to trash! It used to just say "empty" as the empty button. It now reads "empty securly" and takes way too long to empty plus it slows my laptop down. Im using a 17' macbook pro.

Now in XP I was able to remove certain files from the trash bin. I never actually emptied the entire trash bin, but once in a while would delete the oldest files from the trash bin and keep the new ones.
Is this possible in OS X? I was only able to empty the entire trash bin, but not certain parts of it.
So, while cleaning up my macbook pro from old files, I mistakenly get into the NO NAME partition that appears in the OS X partition, but which holds some kind of Windows XP directories. I don't know how I managed to do so, but I somehow deleted a folder under NO NAME/Documents and Settings/[user name] and all the files in that directory.
Not much harm was done, since it seems as though the folder was merely duplicated into the trash and still remains in its original directory in NO NAME. The problem is that every time I try to delete it from the trash it says I don't have permissions. It's only folders and they're all unlocked and I am logged on as admin. I've tried dragging the folder out of the trash but it merely duplicates it (although I have no issues deleting the duplicate). So I have folders that have no use being in or outside the trash, which are proving to be very difficult to delete. I tried verifying my disk fwith Disk Utility, but it resulted ok.
'the item "....." cab;t be moved to the Trash because it can't be delete.' The file is just a Safari download icon you often get when downloading a file, and I can't move it or do anything to it, I can't access its info or move it around the desktop.
