MacBook :: Start Up Disk Is Full / Even Though Yesterday I Deleted 1.5 Gigs Of Memory
Feb 3, 2012Yesterday I deleted enough files to give myself at least 2 gigs of free memory and yet today when I opened up my macbook it tells me I have only 190MB left, and yet none of the files that I deleted remain on the computer, and my trash is completely empty.Does anyone know of any sort of 'Detox' kind of program or method to get the Macbook to reanalyse how much memory it really has left? It's done this before, but I haven't figured out a way to snap some sense back in the harddrive to remind it of the fact that it deleted those large files ages ago.

Apr 17, 2012My mackbook air keeps telling me that my start up disk is full. I delete items daily but keep receiving the same message. I have found that the problem may be that items are being saved in multiple areas on my computer. I don't know why this is happening and so I don't really know which copies to delete and which to save. It this point I cant even get software updates or compress files since there is not enough space available at this time.

Dec 11, 2010I bought a macbook a few months ago (2.26 Core 2 Duo) as I wanted to venture into the Mac world. I bought this model as it was the cheapest and figured it would be my test. Had I not liked it, oh well, an $800 investment that at least my kids could cruise the net with. Fast forward, I absolutely love Mac, everyday computing tasks to me are so much better than windows, I simply could never go back. With that being said, I am thinking of taking this Macbook and giving it to my niece as payment for many future baby sittings so that may put me in the market for a new one but will the latest i7 satisfy my needs?
I do not prefer to have several machines (as I currently do) and would like to have all of my info and tools when I travel so I would like to buy a new MBP i7 and run both Mac and Win OS's. Running Windows 7 64 bit is a requirement as I own a Shop Drawing business and require AutoCAD for everyday production. My company also produces add-on programs that are currently on the market for AutoDesk products so there is no substitutions, it is my living. So, will the new i7 be powerful enough to run Win 7 64 bit and AutoCAD (09 thru 11) as well as my current i7 920 PC with an ATI 4890 Video Card? Would I ever look back and tell myself that this was a bad decision?

PowerPC :: IMac G5 (Non-iSight) Won't Start / System Freezing
Aug 18, 2009A friend of mine has a G5 iMac that won't start. When you press the powerkey it tries to start, the power light glows, the screen goes grey and after a while the fans start whirring. Occasionally (twice in the past couple of days) it has started up, but it froze after a while. Other times the apple logo appears and the gear wheel starts turning but then it freezes.
I have tried booting from DVD, holding down the shift key and have taken the back off and pressed the wee button on the board.
Since my friend has the same model of iMac as me (they were bought at he same time and place) i tried the RAM that I took out of mine when I upgraded.

Apr 12, 2009I just bought a MacBook Pro because I was fed up with VISTA. I am an Architect and have tried TurboCAD etc for the Mac but find them slow and not very user friendly. Until Rhino comes out I am stuck with AutoCAD. I absolutely need to use it. So I need to know, how if possible and what would be the best application to do that. I have read the discussions about Parallels, BootCamp and the free ware Darwine? But I need to know which would work best, and not bug out my computer for AutoCAD as it will be the only windows based program I will run! Everything else I can and do on my beautiful new mac.

Oct 5, 2007So I've got my mothers aluminium 12" Powerbook here because there were some troubles with it, it was freezing, made strange clicking noises on the left side (like 20 times every time she tried to restart) and eventually wouldn't start up anymore. So I guess there must be something wrong with the harddrive .
What is the best strategy to try to save as much data as possible? I have the original OS X 10.3.4 installation disks, I have an external hard drive to write the users data folder to. Do I just slide in the install disk while starting up (I mean I can't slide in the disk while it's off can I?) and will I be able to attach the external drive in order to copy the files?

Based on feedback I found online, I am being told to delete the com.apple.FinalCut Preferences and the /User Data folder. Still, I have to do that repeatedly. Whenever I open the Project file externally , FCP jams. Afterwards, it won't start up again.
Also, it is claiming not to recognize an DVCPro HD 1080i60 connection ; although, this is the same camera on my G5 Mac with FCP 5.1.4 and OSX Tiger

Mar 4, 2009I wasn't sure whether to put this in the Buying Tips sub-forum or this one, so Mods, please feel free to move it if necessary.With the new Mini updates today, I've started to seriously consider picking one up as a workhorse at home. My current computer is the 1.67 Powerbook G4 w/ 2G RAM, and for what I need at the moment, it runs decently; however, I can tell that its a 3.5 year old machine and it won't run everything I'll need it to.
So my question to you is this: would the low end Mini, which I would upgrade w/ a larger 7200rpm HDD and 4G Ram, effectively run Adobe CS4 and Parallels/VMWare Fusion w/ AutoCAD at a decent clip? I understand that its Apple's low(ish)-priced competitor, but keep in mind that I'd be coming from using CS (and obviously no AutoCAD) on an older G4, so any increase in speed coming from three and a half years of computer advancements would still be fast to me...but would they be fast enough for my programs?

I choose Bootcamp to use all the resources of my MAC. It didnt let me install it but did it with Fusion. How retarded is that. OEM disk SP2.Then I got to Apple store and explain the problem. Dude over there says it should work. Exchange my Macbook for a brand new one and lets try again.Now I cant even load the same disk with Fusion. I go back to the store to buy a case and ask the question again. Now the answer is...Bootcamp wont accept an OEM Windows disk unless you get a copy which was never use.

Dec 17, 2009So I downloaded parallels 4 and set up a virtual machine with Vista (I couldn't get a copy of XP so I had to settle). I then installed an educational version of AutoCAD 2010, it installs and everything but when I open the program it begins loading until a point where it doesn't respond. I have reinstalled it, uninstalled it and installed it again, but the same exact thing happens each time.
When AutoCAD stops responding it says this at the bottom of the screen:

I don't know whether that is relevant or not. I read somewhere that to run AutoCAD 2010 on vista you need 2GB of memory. With parallels the way it is i can only commit 1GB of memory to vista. I was wondering if it would work on bootcamp where i can devote all my memory to windows. Is it even possible to uninstall parallels and all that and switch to bootcamp? If thats even possible would I be able to preserve my copy of vista or would I have to get a new license?

I just started using Autocad 2010 on this computer, and for some reason, the "delete" key doesn't delete anything when I press it. I tried to set "pickfirst" to 1 (checking the box of "noun/ verb"), but it doesn't help. Setting them both to <0> and <1> don't make a difference, both options don't "delete" the selected object.

Aug 23, 2014I have a Mac Book Pro Version OX 10.9.4 with an 2.9 GHz Intel Core 7 and an Intel HD Graphics 4000. I am on warranty still. I was using Autocad 13 perfectly until suddenly it collapsed and I started getting this WHIP error message. I did some research and it says it is because the compatibility of the "Graphical Card". But I havent changed the graphical card so I am not sure why is happening suddently.
I restarted my computer already and uninstalled the program and re installed like it recommends in some websites it but no luck. I am desperate.Â
Another thing happening weirdly lately with my mac is that sometimes the cursor of my mouse gets this lines around it... like horizontal lines that cross the arrow and follow it everywhere.
It may not be the same thing but also searching in the forums seems again a "Graphical Card issue"Â
And on top of that when I move the computer sometimes... i hear a weird click noise from the inside.Â

Mar 23, 2012I have both my gmail accounts set up with teh Mail app on my Macbook Pro , I went ahead and deletd a bunch of files, some that contain attachements and I emptied the trash, they appear to be gone, not really, if i restart the computer and start up Mail again and click the ALL MAIL box all the emails show up again!! and if i search a phrase or name via Spotlight all the emails show up again! I want the emails gone for good, I went into Mail Prefrerence and checked/unchecled all the necessary tabs, I also checked that I dont want messages saved offline, FYI when I check the email inbox via browser www.google.com / gmail teh emails arent there but they seem to be stored on my mac.

Software :: Data Recovery From Deleted Folders / Files Are Deleted Via Trash?
May 18, 2010I have a MacPro (Intel), and I had my Music folder on a second (non-boot) internal drive. That drive was getting full, so I bought yet another internal drive to put in one of the other bays, thinking to copy the folders to the new, larger-capacity drive. So I bought a 2 Tb drive and transferred all my MOVIES to the new drive, but then went back and deleted my MUSIC folder and emptied the trash. I knew immediately that I'd made a mistake.
I haven't written anything to that drive whatsoever from that moment on, so absolutely nothing should have been over-written. I have plenty of room on the new drive to which I can recover the deleted files. Unfortunately the folder/directory was very large, with over 20,000 files, mostly of podcasts/spoken word stuff, much of which is no longer available or would represent thousands of hours of download time, plus all my digitized folk music from long out-of-print LP records.
You'd think I'd be more responsible with >600 Gb of data! However, fortunately the drive is in good working order, it just requires a good recovery strategy. I know that services that do recovery charge a fortune, and because I haven't written anything to that drive and it still mounts without problems, I'm hoping I can do this myself with a good data recovery software package. Because I am talking about literally thousands of files, it is just too painful to think about editing all the metadata about each file (name, artist, album, etc.), and ideally I would like to recover the files and the file structure so podcasts are recovered as such, etc.
Is this at all possible?
If so, what are the relative merits of File Salvage vs. Data Rescue vs. Kernel for Macintosh (Nucleus Data Recovery) vs. VirtualLab Data Recovery vs. Stellar Phoenix? Is there something better than these--these are the only ones I found on a Web search. Are there any head-to-head reviews of which someone is aware?

May 6, 2012My computer is a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Version 10.7.3, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4GB memory. Start-up has become somewhat erratic. Consistently, if I close the lid on the computer it won't restart when I reopen it. I'll have to hold the power button down for about 15 seconds, let up and then press it again. Sometimes restarting after a shutdown the computer will go through the long start-up I associate with a crash shutdown. Sometimes login start-up items don't start up. Sometimes I have to click somewhere on the screen to make the menu bar at the top of the screen visible. Overall, unexpected things keep happening. Although I don't think it probably relates, Chrome is my primary browser.
