MacBook Pro :: Keep Items From Filing Behind The Dock
Mar 11, 2012
They have terrible file management skills and the short version is that they tend to use the desktop as a documens folder. I'm working on this but in the mean time there is a problem where when they save a file from e-mail or what have you it goes to the desktop. Which has items in the first 8 positions. The ninth position is behind the dock and rather then moving up to the next column it goes right behind the dock.
Any time I try to remove an icon from the dock or an item from the login items and then logout/restart they come right back. It's like OS X is remembering my last login and then just duplicating it. I can't get it to keep it the settings I give it. Google and a quick search of the forums gave me nothing.
I have MacBook Pro version 10.9.4. I can't add or delete items on my dock . Whenever I try to press the icon and try to drag it, it shows a option bar. I want to edit my dock, but I can't. I tried to reset my .plist, killall Dock, and set my dock options to default, but the dock still refuses to move.
I have recently had to re-install the operating system, but I can no longer remove items from the dock. I used to be able to drag items off but I can no longer do this. I have Snow Leopard Version 10.6.8. I have tried to repair permissions, but this has not changed anything
For some reason since installing a new OS I can't remove programs from my Dock anymore? I used to be able to just right click on the program and select remove from dock but everything program I now right click on says "show in finder" with no other options to delete it. I've only just recently installed OS X 10.3.9 (I can't remember what I used to have on here as this was a new OS CD).
What would be a good way, if possible, to change the colors and such of the icons in my dock? I wanna make them all black and white, with some splashes of red in there. Also, any other parts of my OS that I could customize to the same color scheme would be nice. I have Leopard, 10.5.2, if you need that info.
How do I remove icons for applications from the Lion dock? I have a new iMac and can't use the normal drag and remove "poof" or add by dragging from applications folder.
I don't know what happened but for some reason, I can no longer right click or remove any items from my Dock
I have Onyx installed which has an option to lock the dock, however that is off. I am certain that my dock isn't locked because I am able to move items around the dock, and also add new items
I don't know when this started but it may have been because I was changing the dock's appearance by replacing some of the pictures in the system files (frontline.png, separator.png etc.)
I've restarted my Macbook a couple of times and have also done killall Dock in the terminal but everytime, I still have these two problems
Also, when booting up my Macbook now, the dock takes much longer to load. Before, it would usually be one of the quicker things to bootup but now it is always the last (before Quicksilver was usually the last program to load for me)
I also used a Terminal command to add a "Recent Applications" stack by following instructions posted here: [URL]
I've since removed this Stack but the problem still occurs. Don't know whether or not this had an impact or not
I'm having a strange problem with my dock and dashboard, whenever I add Items to either they quickly vanish, not allowing me to change them. With the dock, I can't add Flash CS4 to the dock, it will just appear, then disappear. With the dashboard, I can't add any widgets I've downloaded without the dashboard closing to desktop. I've tried reinstalling the widgets, no luck. Has anyone had this problem before, or know how to fix it?
Has anybody had any experience with Dock items disappearing? I simply drag and drop the desired application I was to remain in the Dock, and within 10 seconds it just disappears from the Dock! I haven't un-installed the application. I did have Dock items selected to Sync in MobileMe, but I disabled that as a test. I've also tried right-clicking the application while it's open, and selecting the 'Keep in Dock' option, but same result. After about 10 seconds of closing the app, it disappears from the Dock. I've run Repair Disk Permissions, no effect. I found a similar thread on this forum, but it suggested basically wiping the Mac and starting again, which I don't really find as a solution!
I am looking at buying a new iMac. I would like to ask those who know their fair share about macs a few questions.Firstly, with regard to the design, given past upgrades, when would you think the current model will get a re-design. I would be annoyed if i fork out ?1000 for apple to bring a new one out, I ask this as i recall seeing something on apple filing a design for a touchscreen mac (could be completely wrong on that and making a fool of myself.) Secondly, what extra software would you reccomend, I am a university student so need it for work and I enjoy gaming, not that I have ever really got into computer gaming but I am open minded.
I'm looking for mac compatible record keeping software. Nothing fancy, I just want a visually pleasing application where I can import important files like birth certificate, SSN, tax documents and etc., and be able to organize/color code etc. Of course, it needs to be able to encrypt databases. I'm basically looking for an alternative to what my bank Wells Fargo provides online for secure doc backups. (I already have a backup solution for my entire computer)
I found a program called Records Master, but it's a little too basic and doesn't prove to be much more helpful over creating an encrypted mountable drive (which is pretty much what I do now). I'm simply looking to streamline some of my paperwork like taxes and stuff, and it's a pain looking through mounds of unorganized half chewed paper that's all over the place taking up too much space.
My own account login items list in my systems preferences window is limited to one item- an istat menus helper app. But my mac hd/library/StartupItems folder contains two items that I don't recognize and don't think have much to do with starting up the computer. One is a Qmaster folder and another is named RDUSB00A3Startup. Each folder contains a few items, including a unix executable file and a plist file. My mac hd/system/library/StartupItems folder is empty. Can anyone please advise on whether the items in my mac hd/library/StartupItems folder are necessary and if deleting them could affect my computer? I don't use Qmaster and have no idea what the RDUSB00A3Startup folder is for.
I've been trying to change my docks theme for the past few days but have been unable. I've used Candybar, Dock Library etc. and none of them seem to work. I'm really annoyed because it used to work for me. Any suggestions on how I can remedy this problem?
Today the OS X dock on my late '08 MacBook Pro 15" stop working like normal. It used to be, when an App was open, the icon would appear in the dock with a sort of highlight.
Now, the apps run fine but no longer appear in the dock. If I minimize it, it does show as a running app in the left hand side, but that isn't what I want it to do. Is there a quick way to get it to work again?
Very suddenly my dock has disappeared, (and occasionally reappears), and is now completely non-useable. Why..? I have created other accounts on my computer previously and the dock on those is fine...I have looked in Activity monitor and it flashes on and then disappears in there.I tried using terminal to 'killall Dock', but this did nothing...Am using Leopard on Alu iMac.
I recently installed Super Dock on my Mac and uninstalled it because i didn't like it, but it seems that the effects of the program still exist (custom animations and behaviors made by the program). How would I go about fixing that ? Can I reinstall the Dock ?
I was at the apple store diagnosing something, and the lady told me that item's on my desktop take up ram. I have a couple folders with tons of videos in them on my desktop. My ram would surely be shot if they took up ram
I will get my shipment of my new Apple Macbook Pro on Monday, which is my first ever Apple laptop. I have always had PC's and wonder about transferring pictures and files that I use for work.
When I use Autodesk Maya, I find that there are so many menu items that they don't all display. I can hide some of the defaults e.g. battery, volume etc but I don't like hiding them. Is there anyway to get them all to display or any plugin that adds a second bar.
my menu bar items such as wireless, time, and battery life even spot light are not showing anymore, i installed applejack and it did nothing, i tried going into prefrences i click on adding them to the menu bar, but the check mark disappears after 5 sec and nothing shows up,
Info: MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
