Does anyone know how to import video from the Sony handycam DCR-DVD310 into imovie. None of the intstructions seem to work. The mac doesn't recognise the camera, and applecare don't know how to solve it.

After unsuccessfully trying to troubleshoot some problems for my dad from half way round the world I thought I had better ask for some help!
He has a Canon digital camera and a Sony he uses for underwater shots. He imports all of the pics and movies from both cameras into iPhoto, and the movies from both cameras play fine out of iPhoto.
Recently he has decided to start editing them in iMovie 8, and here comes the bit where I'm not 100% sure what he has been doing, but I'll try to explain as best I can. When he first opened iMovie it imported all of the movies out of iPhoto that he had taken with the Canon, but not those from the Sony. If he tries to import them manually then when he finds the file in Finder it is greyed out so he can't select it for import. The files have the extension .mpeg, which I got him to change to mp4 in case it was something as simple as that, but no luck.
Is this something to do with Sony using a proprietary MPEG encoding? I thought that if it playe din one iLife app it would play in any of them, but it seems not!
How do I hook up my Sony HDR-CX150 Handycam to my imac? I am using a HDMI cable and the imac is not recognizing the video camera.

At present I have to import the full length of the video clip into the event and in so doing, I am unable to 'weed' out unrequired segments. I just converted to a 2007 Macbook (wife's old comp) and was using Sony's PMB software with my PC (Windows XP SP2). I know that I can use iMovie '08 to import the files but they are HUGE. I assume it's because PMB imports in AVHCD format and iMovie uses .MOV? Is there another program I can use to import my files. I don't want to waste all my hard drive space importing a few movies.

I just bought a Sony Handycam DCR-SR42. It does not have a mini DVD or Firewire, rather it has its own hard drive and connects via USB. My Mac, a desktop from 2006, running OS X 10.4.10, has iMovie HD. I'm new on Mac - just bought the new Air about a month ago What I want to do is to have iTunes manage all my media, since well...since it's supposed to do this. I have my media storred on a NAS, both music and ripped movies.
Music was imported into iTunes without any problems at all, but for the life of me I can't get the movies to import. They are ripped in an .mp4 format, so iTunes should be able to play them, but for some reason I can't import them at all. I've tried by simply dragging them into iTunes, and via the "Open.." function in iTunes as well. Same result - no imported file, and no error messages.
Am I missing something here? Shouldn't I be able to simply import and play them via iTunes?
Doesn't seem to matter if they are placed on the desktop either.

I have been editing compound clips and when I get half way through i notice early clips in the timeline are missing. So if there is clips ABCD in a connected clip, it will be now AC and the other clips are now gone. I've pressed undo until i saw when they were deleted and it seems when i'm selecting clips later in the timeline it selects earlier clips and deletes them with the clips i want to delete. This is causing a major headache as it seems to be random, I can't replicate it on demand, but it happens eventually in ever compound clip I create. I haven't noticed it while editing a project.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried doing several things such as flattening the images, changing the resolution, using different file formats. I tried making the images exactly 1920 by 1080 which someone mentioned was the px dimensions that imovie uses and that didn't work.
The only time the image seems clearer is when I go to show photo settings, which is weird.
These images were originally raws so I can make them whatever size is needed for imovie. I just need to know what it likes best!
I was thinking I might not be rendering them properly. I imported it into idvd and it rendered it that way. Is there another way I can do it maybe?
I have recently started learning to how to use FCE. I've got quite far with my first project and am at the point where I want to move some clips around the timeline. I do want to move clips inbetween other clips, rearranging their order, not deleting them. But whenever I drag a clip to fit splice in between two other clips, it just deletes whats underneath.
