MacBook Pro :: Hinge On The Back Of My Laptop Is Uneven
Apr 21, 2010
I bought the new macbook pro 15inch 4 days ago. Today I just noticed that the hinge on the back of my laptop is uneven can I ask for a replacement? I still have the 14 day warranty.

I have 3 problems with my aluminum macbook and I think that they are all related and are caused by each other.1) The hinge creeks sometimes when I slowly close the screen and I'm afraid it will only get worse as this just started happening.) When the macbook is closed, the screen is uneven. The right side does not completely close and there is a gap between the base of the computer and the screen. However, the left side is just fine unless I push down on the right side then the left side just goes up and becomes uneven.

I have a late 2008 uMBP 15 inch and in safari, regardless of using the integrated graphics card or the higher end card, when I press apple t for a new tab the computer hangs for at least 10 seconds then once it finally loads the top sites page it appears all scrambles for a second, then it works normally.
My second problem is that my hinge is very loose. I can't hold the laptop at 45 degree angle without the screen falling down and closing. Will apple fix this?

Just received my 27" iMac i7. I've noticed that every few hours I need to lift the screen up, because the weight of the screen pulls it downward on it's hinge.
Does anyone else have this issue? What do I do to resolve it?

I got my Unibody MacBook the first day they were available, and since late December, the hinge has gotten stiffer and stiffer, making a cracking noise when I move it after it stays in one position for a few seconds.
I took it to the Genius Bar (covered under AppleCare) but the people there wouldn't do anything about it, saying it's within normal spec and classifying it as a "user perception issue." (The slightly condescending sound of that phrase is for another post.)
Has anyone attempted to lubricate the hinge in their laptop themselves? I removed all of the bottom paneling and looked at the hinge, but didn't see how to separate it from the case easily. Would it be a bad idea to try to squirt a little silicone lubricant into the hinge to see if that helps the issue? Is there another trick I could try.My mom has a Unibody Pro with a hinge that glides nice and smoothly and it's annoying mine is no longer working properly like this.

Build-quality wise the unibodies are really as perfect as I've ever experienced any machine to be. Simply amazing. BUT, the black plastic hinge cover is cheap and creaks as soon as I grab the computer or open the display. I opened her up to see if there was anything I could do to reinforce it or something, but I didn't want to mess with it.
Quite a few seem to have this 'issue' and I thought maybe somebody has figured out a solution?Such a shame on an otherwise perfect machine. I would have preferred the same kind of rubbery plastic that was on the old generation MBP

I replaced my Cd-rom/DVD player a month ago after it was giving me trouble. I bought a Superdrive on ebay and installed it. I'm still having problems though, and I can barely use it. I have to tilt the laptop back to get it to read or eject a disc. Do you think it's the drive or is it some other problem since I am on my 2nd drive? I don't have the money to have apple fix it, it's only 1.5 years old.

When I'm using my Macbook air in meetings or in classes, and it's unplugged, and it goes black because i stop using it for a second, then when I want to come back sometimes it comes back quicly, but others it just shows the cursor, but nothing else, for a big seconds, staying black, taking ages to come backĀ

Could any readers recommend an affordable basic external hard drive for a macbook air, which would also serve as a back-up for my old pc laptop? I don't need it to be portable, just to serve as back-up at home, though if it doesn't escalate the price too much wireless would be a bonus. I see there is a vast range of products available at a vast range of prices

My air has an interesting case of uneven backlighting especially at the edges. This is not bothering to me because I think it's a result of the very thinly made LCD, which helps this computer be so small.
Test your MacBook Air 11.6" by downloading this image and putting it in fullscreen to see if your backlighting is uneven.

Seems my left USB port outputs more power than my right. Certain devices charge fine on the left but not on the right.

I was just noticing on my shiny new unibody MacBook Pro that the glass trackpad is uneven. At the bottom left side, it's basically flush with the surrounding case. But then it dips down on the bottom right to below the surrounding case. Is this normal, and has anyone else seen the same?

With the laptop open and sitting on a flat surface (granite countertop), I can press the lower left corner of the laptop down about 0.5 -1 mm and the computer wobbles a bit. It seems that the little black feet are not the same thickness all around. I am really surprised because Apple is so fanatical about having such low manufacturing tolerances... yet they somehow overlook the feet. Anyone else out there having this issue on their brand new unibody Macbook Pro? Does this go away after the feet have time to wear down a little?

I am planning to upgrade the standard 4gb of on my April 2010 Macbook Pro (the basic 2.4ghz model) to 6gb.
Over on Crucial memory suppliers they advise using two identical modules, i.e. 2 4gb sticks rather than 1 2gb + 1 4gb.
Can anyone chip in on whether this is good advise or just them trying to make a few more bucks?
For my needs 6gb should be perfect, I have a desktop already with that amount, although to be fair the desktop is 3 * 2gb modules.

Got my Macbook Pro i7 back from Apple today. First thing I notice is that the lid is uneven on one side. Second, I also have a small nick on the lid. (extremely small but none the less.) This is outrageous. This is there store you would think they would know how to treat their products perfectly. What should I do?

Irecently had my laptop (holding my itunes library) stolen. Grrr. So I have since purchased some software called Senuti which enables me to replicate my ipod back onto my Mac laptop. The problem I have though, is I have over 8,000 songs on my ipod and my laptop doesn't seem to have nearly enough memory for me to copy back. I have deleted everything possible from the Mac to free up space, but there is not enough.
Is there a way I can get my music back from my ipod, and be able to run ITunes effectively again and keep updating my library with new music and pictures? I have an external hard drive, but I'm unsure how I could either use the hard-drive to facilitate the transfer, or do I need to copy what content I have managed to copy to itunes, to the hard drive, then delete from the laptop and copy the next batch?

My Air's screen is slightly darker at the bottom (only on a few millimeters, but still). It only happens on a white/light background though (I don't have my dock at the bottom). In comparison, the screen of my MacBook has a very uniform backlight. Does anybody else have this issue?

I just received my new IMac and was starting to do some typing for a school project when I noticed that the keyboard bottom stand was uneven so whenever I type it bounces much like a chair with uneven legs. I was wondering what to do because now I have to stick a credit card underneath it to keep it from moving.

I just bought the base model Mac Mini yesterday, and I am going to tear it open today to put in a bigger hard drive and more RAM. My question is...since I don't need the entire 4GB of RAM, I am happy with 3GB. The system has one 1GB chip in there already, so can I simply just pop in a second 2GB chip for a total of 3GB? I wasn't sure if they had to be installed in pairs or not. Is there any downside besides obviously the memory not being under Apple's warranty?

I have a small issue on my iBook (G4) that's been driving me a bit crazy lately. I noticed a few months ago that when I selected a song/video on iTunes to play, I would get uneven volume output on my two internal speakers. I tried restarting iTunes, restarting the computer, etc. to no avail. In addition, sometimes this problem would not arise for a few days, and then suddenly start up again.
I then dug up the program Audio MIDI Setup and saw that the sliders were uneven . Once I slid them back together, I thought I had solved my problem. Nope! It came back, and I even saw that if I opened up Audio MIDI Setup right after the computer turned on, the sliders would be skewed even before opening iTunes or Safari or some other program that used audio.
I've come accustomed to manually balancing the volume output, but the irregularity of this problem occurring frustrates me. Attached is a screenshot of Audio MIDI Setup with the issue--note the Audio Output sliders.

After playing with my friend's MacBook, and having a long hard think, I'm definitely of the opinion that the hinge on my MacBook is far too loose. It can still support itself, but I get major wobble upon opening, it even wobbles when I type (not ferociously).
I don't get any sort of resiliance when I try to open or close it, I literally have to be careful as so not to slam it, it's like I'm closing thin air.
It just doesn't feel sturdy enough for a notebook which needs everyday carting around and use.
Also when the MB is closed the top lid (with the screen) slides a bit this way and that over the base. Only a few millimeters, but enough to notice.
The problem is, I'm most likely only going to get one opportunity to get to see an genius.
The MB is covered by AppleCare and so forth, but will the genius open the thing up right there and then and give whatever needs tightening a good tighten?
Have any of you experienced this issue before and was it solved, and if so how? (Time, in-store or send off job, etc etc).

I just unboxed this beauty. This is my first mac ever and I love it so far. However one thing I noticed straight out of the box was how loose the hinges are. The screen tilts if I move the macbook air to a 90 degree angle. I've own quite a few laptops but this is the first one with a loose hinge straight out of the box. Is this normal or should I be meeting with a nerd?

On another post...I indicated that I bought a MacBook Pro 13 inch laptop loaded up with all the goodies and decided to cancel my order due in part to possibly saving by installing my own SSD and RAM. I did not really mention the main reason that I cancelled my order....
I did not mention that I went to a local Best Buy and checked out the 13 inch MacBook Pro on display. I was kind of shocked to note the amount of wiggle that was present on the display screen of the 13 inch. I read another thread about the screen becoming loose and wobbly on the 13 inch MBP after time.
Does this occur on the 15 and 17 inch models as well?
I have a 3-4 year old 15 inch MBP and the screen is still solid as a rock. I hate to spend dollars on a lesser quality product so I thought I would ask if this screen weakness comes with all of the newer MacBook Pro models.
(I did not check out the 15 or 17 inch models at Best Buy...but I intend to go back and see if they are weak also). I want to buy a 15 inch MBP...so I hope that they are solid as a rock as my older MBP.

It appears that the MacBook Air may have a hinge problem.
Mine sure does, exactly as described, see [URL].
Not sure if a lawsuit will fix mine, but if it gets noticed maybe Apple will respond. Anyone else having this problem?

So I just got my MacBook Air (rev A) back from AppleCare after my hinge (like many others', apparently) decided to randomly bust itself. I was very pleased that when I took my MBA to the Apple Store, they didn't bat an eye about replacing the hinge (I'd heard horror stories about Apple denying the part was defective and calling the damage a user error, even with computers covered under warranty). But I was shocked when my package arrived today and the letter inside detailed the parts replaced. Keep in mind, the only thing wrong with my computer (as far as I could tell) was a broken hinge. Here's what they replaced:
Antenna window
Video Display Panel
Camera
Bottom Case
Display Housing
Clutch
Clutch (two different part numbers)
Bezel
Top Case
Logic Board

It seems like the hinge has stiffened up since owning it. Sometimes makes a pop noise when moving it from a non-moving position. I would imagine it's the plastic bezel that's kinda loose and snappy if you touch it at the bottom of the hinge but I dunno. Any one else? I can deal I just hope it doesn't cause damage.
I need this machine to be fully working when I go abroad in the Fall.
