Next week I am buying a new Macbook Pro 13 inch in New York. I am only staying a few days there so I want to be shure I dont leave with a dud.
What errors/fabrication faults should I look for on the unit.
Dead pixels, what else?
Can I do some tests of some kind? To be shure I have a good one?
OK, I have never really done any computer surgery before. I want to make sure I don't leave anything out before I dive in.
I have a 15" Macbook Pro Core Duo 2.4ghz 4,1 with 200 Gb harddrive and 2gb Ram. It's full, and slow when I run Fusion. I also use a ReadyNas Network storage drive, and have another external which I periodically use for Time Machine backups. The ReadyNas hold musics and video but is not a true back up. I also use Fusion with some Windows stuff. I have the Snow Leopard discs but never installed them. I also have the original install discs (1 and 2) that came with computer.
I want to do 3 things:
1) upgrde HD to 500 GB
2) upgrade RAM to max which I understand is 4gb
3) install Snow Leopard
Checklist:
1) my backup will be from Time Machine. I will do a fresh backup before starting.
2) Order 2x2gb RAM from Crucial website according to their hardware finder. Can I do more? I want the max, I do some video stuff. I think 4 is the max right?
3) Order 500 GB 7200 RPM drive from somewhere. Maybe DIY package from OCW. Don't know if one drive is better than the other.
4) Order Ifixit manuals and watch some YouTube videos to do hardware upgrade.
5) Dissassemble computer...Reassemble. Pray
6) Boot with my original startup discs....how do I do this? Never done it before. Do I put discs in computer before it is on and turn it on? Do I turn it on and then insert the discs?
7) Now I should again have Leopard on my computer with new stuff right? Need to get my things on here, will run a Time Machine Backup through System Prefs.
8) I should now have my stuff, my 3rd party apps, my music, etc. on the computer. Now I will run the Snow Leopard disc to upgrade the OS. I assume you just put these in and they go right?
I very much do not want a 2K paperweight. Would MUCH appreciate any critique to my gameplan! I don't think this process has any effect on my network storage, but any insight here would be great as well.
My new Mac should be here in a few days. I am looking for a checklist of what I need to do to check things for problems and set things up. I am thinking of using Migration Assistant to transfer my iTunes library, iPhoto library, Mail, internet setting (and hopefully passwords!) and a few other things. I read MA is not the best at transferring between the older non Intel Macs (my old Mac is an O.G. 2004 G5 running 10.3), so I may do it in disk target mode. I have more RAM coming, should I install that before I turn on the computer for the first time? And there are two HD's, the second one will be used for Time Machine. Do I need to set anything special up with that?

I'll be upgrading to Snow Leopard when it comes out (hopefully the 28th). I've decided to do a "clean install" because I'm working off a Time Machine backup that originally came from a PowerBook.
So I need some help coming up with a checklist of things I haven't thought of to backup. I've thought of lots of the obvious things:
-iPhoto Library (does backing up just the library preserve albums?)
-Music/ Movies + playlists
-Documents
-iPhone backup (where is this located?)
I Need to find a To Do check list app that I can use on my iMac that will sync to my iPhone and iPad mini. All the ones I've come across do not sync to all three.

I was just wondering what is the difference between the two options "Verify Disk" and Verify Disk Permissions"- what exactly do each of them do? I've ran all the verification tests on each hard drive I have and repaired them when needed. So far it has only been my external WD hard drive that needed to have a repair, though I didn't notice anything wrong with it prior to running the verification test. So Onyx won't work on my Mac every time I open it, it says Onyx quit unexpectedly.
I was told to try and repair the disk using disk utility.
I opened it and hit verify disk. After about 5 minutes and it said "invalid node structure" "volume check failed" and "error: filesystem verify or repair failed"
Why is that happening?
I just bought a used MBA mid 2012 2.0 256 i7. I am not able to verify the hard disk. The progress bar does the spinning candy cane thing while it is getting ready to go to solid blue then it disappears and the text says "verifying volume “hard disk” Checking file system" but nothing is happening. I waited 10 minutes but still nothing was added to to the list and nothing changed.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've had this 750 GB external drive for a year or two now, and have used it with no problems. All of a sudden, it can't be read by my MacBook. Finder can't see it. No applications can see it except Disk Utility. But DU can't repair it, and when I try verifying I just get "Verify volume failed: Invalid request." Also, when I'm using DU normally, I can't even eject the drive. But if I boot from my Mac disc, I can. But that's the only difference; still no repairing or verifying, and I get the same error message.

I have a mbp 5,2 running 10.5.7 will all updated software. I ran first aid on the computer, from another computer, and from the startup disk. I keep getting the following output everytime I try to verify permissions. I was wondering about two things:

I haven't had a problem downloading anything so far on my mac. However when trying to download Onyx in Safari the download finishes and then I get a "Verification Error" message. When trying to download through FireFox I get another error messages that my codecs are overrun. I've cleared my cache in both browsers as well as got rid of any partial downloads of the file to no avail. Has anyone experienced this before that can help me out?

Oftentimes when I visit credible websites I get the following dropdown message: "Safari can't verify the identity of the website [URL]"." I've had my MacBook Pro for over four years and the problem just started last week. I am running OS X (10.5.8).

I'm not really sure what to do or what exactly is wrong. I'm hoping not to reboot or reinstall all together, but if I have to... I suppose there's no choice. I tried 'Verify Disk' from the utilities, but is fails and says

(It should be 712836 instead of 712840)
Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 171417 instead of 171413)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I tried doing a 'Repair Disk' from the installation CD, but it says it fails because it could not unmount the HD.
Im getting this error when I verify disk but it wont let me repair it. What can I do?

The error called "Filesystem verify or repair failed" appeared with the following information: invalid volume count / invalid directory count. This volume needs to be repaired.
Question: Is this causing the macbook to run slow? How can I repair this problem? What actions inflicts this problem? ( To prevent this in the future )
Mac keeps powering down on startup. I am able to get to the Lion Recovery and verify the physical disk but I am not able to verify the volume "MAC HD" I get errors. The physical disk verify looks good.

After upgrading to Safari 5.1.4 I'm constantly getting error meesage pop-ups similar to these.Currently I'm running Lion 10.7.3 My computer time & date is correct. I have reset Safari's cache / cookies, etc to no no avail.On some websites its no displaying graphics properly and its starting to get extremely frustrating.Safari is running in 64-bit mode.Is it time to uninstall Safari 5.1.4 and install the previous release?

1. Very recently I keep getting the message 'Cannot verify certificate of server' on a great number of webpages on my mac,including this apple site. This has been around the time of getting an iPhone, perhaps a coincidence? I have never seen this message before. I press 'continue' however it's getting a bit annoying.
2. Also, since getting this message my facebook page cannot load properly on safari (mac). It comes up mis-aligned on the page, in times new roman font, with no colour or logos/images. This is around the time of changing the password of my facebook account via my iPhone, again, not sure if this is a coincidence. I'm on snow leopard 10.6.8.
