MacBook Pro :: Can't Minimize The Screen

Mar 31, 2012

I can't minimise the screen.  When I hover in the top right hand corner I don't get the menu drop down or the double arrow to shrink the screen (sorry if my terminology is wrong) so I can't get rid of Safari or get to the dock at the bottom or anything.  I am stuck.  Is there an alternative to the ctrl-alt-delete function on a PC as short of turning the Mac off I can't think what to do.

I was wondering if there was a short key to press when your in a full screen such as a game. For example when I play Cod4, I often get messages on MSN or Skype and I need to physically exit my game to see or wait and hope the person is online when I get back.

Applications :: Minimize Full Screen App Or Game?

Apr 15, 2006

How do I minimize a full screen app or game? For example, if I were in a game, that takes up the entire screen, how do I get back to the desktop without exiting the game? Kind of like on Windows, when you open the Start menu while in a game, it brings you back to the desktop.

MacBook :: Media Library Backup To Minimize Data Loss

Jan 16, 2009

So I recently "downgraded" from an octocore Mac Pro to a AluMacBook 2.4. All sadness aside, I'm loving the form factor, the portability and the light up keyboard. I have a series of questions related to my overflowing media library (as my Mac Pro was acting as my media server).

1. I've become attached to the idea of installing two disks into my MacBook by removing the optical drive. I've done the appropriate amount of research to determine feasibility (it IS indeed possible). But I wonder, could I RAID these disks together in a striped array (0?). I tried launching the RAID Utility on my MacBook and it says "it is not supported with this computer". I plan on maintaining a Time Capsule backup of the RAID as often as possible to minimize data loss should something happen.

2. The reason I'm looking to RAID is because my iTunes library is currently just a bit bigger than any 500GB disk I could fit into my MacBook. So as a "just in case" question, does anyone know if I can spread my iTunes library across multiple places? Say, for example, I want iTunes to manage all my "audio" files on my internal disk and all my "TV shows and movies" on an external or the other internal... is that possible?

OS X :: Why Does The Red X Minimize Instead Of Close

Feb 22, 2008

so this has been bugging me ever since I made the switch. No this isn't a complaint about how the red X does not work like in Windows in closing an application. This is about hitting the red X to close the window which is what it's supposed to do, but then having the window go minimize in the dock instead of closing. Sometimes it takes two hits of the button after being minimized to finally close it.

This doesn't always happen but when it does it is annoying as hell. am I the only one experiencing this issue? Or is it purposely made that way?

OS X :: How To Minimize Windows On Mac

Jul 14, 2009

For the life of me I can't figure out why this feature is still here. I've been searching for ways people use it, but I can't really find much. Any time I need to clear things, I just hide them. The only thing I can come up with is in the event that someone wants to hide just one of an application's window. But also, it seems inefficient. There's a keyboard shortcut to minimize windows, but there doesn't seem to be one to bring it back. Most of the time, it's just annoying because I accidentally click it. How do you use the minimize function if at all?

OS X :: Minimize Applications To The Dock?

Oct 4, 2009

I'm new to the Mac and have been getting used to it quite nicely, but there's one thing that I peeves me just slightly. That one thing is that whenever I click somewhere that is off the application I'm using, it just disappears into the background and there's no minimized icon of it on my dock. Now if I hit the orange minimize button manually it will minimize off to the right side of my dock, but I would like to know if it is possible to somehow get the same thing to happen automatically when I click somewhere off the application I'm using.

This mainly annoys me on my MSN conversations. A lot of times, I've clicked on the video I was watching. Paused it to go do something and then when I was done watching the video and wanted to start chatting again, I find out that my friend had said something and I missed it. (My MSN dock icon only jumps up four times before sitting still).

OS X :: Double Click To Minimize Browsers?

I know on my late-08 macbook pro (10.5.6), i can double click on a browser page to minimize. i was pretty sure i could do this on my late 07 macbook, but now following a hard drive replacement and Snow Leopard install, I can't minimize firefox or safari via double clicking on the top of the browser. like i said i was pretty sure i could do this before.. but the macbook pro has been mine for a while, so i don't know 100% if im dreaming that or not. i checked the preferences for both and i didn't see a setting to be clicked....so either it stopped working with snow leopard, or it never worked on the late-07 models.

OS X :: Minimize Window In Dock Issue?

Aug 12, 2010

So I was toying around with this app I learned about recently called Secrets. It's an add-on for your System Preferences. For those who don't know what it is, it easily changes preferences in many Apple apps like iTunes, Finder, etc that Apple didn't make public for change and without you directly using Terminal commands to make the changes. Definitely check it out if you're interested in tweeking your system a bit.

Anyway, so while playing with it, changed some wanted things, and some things which I wasn't sure what they were but decided to change it anyway and see what happened.

I did something to my dock where when you minimize a window open, it'll go down normally into the dock, but instead shows the top left corner of that window rather than showing the whole window. It looks like this when I minimize...

[Sample of my dock near the trash bin with Preview, Quicktime, and Firefox docked.]

I want to change it back to the default option where it minimizes and shows the whole window rather than just the top corner. This is bugging me! I can't figure out what I did and went through all the options in Secrets.

Anyone know the Terminal command to change it back to the default or any other alternative to change it back to normal?

[If anyone asks what icons those are in my dock, it's the Litho 2.0 series from Icon Factory.]
