How to adapt an external hard drive with Snow leopard (from my sold Mac Pro) to my Mac Book Pro with Lion? Any hints on where to start? I would like to use the external on a permanent basis as it has 2T without deleting a lot of the programs.

I have installed my hard drive from a previous but terminally I'll iMac that was running Snow Leopard into a Sata to USB enclosure. This is displaying on the desktop of my new iMac running Lion as an external Hard drive,also system preferences sees it as a start up source.My question is , is it safe to restart into Snow leopard without causing a kernel panic and if it does boot will it be fast enough to use as it as a USB drive.

I have an external hard drive which I first used with my pc. It is formatted for NTFS. Now with my new MBP, I want to back up data, and I am having no luck. The external hard drive is a Verbatim brand, 500GB. On their website FAT32 download dosnt work! I have tried disk utility with no luck. What am I missing?

This is a major issue for me, as I feel like I'm going to end up damaging my hard drive.
I am downloading a legal torrent to my external hard drive, however when I quit Transmission and try to eject my external drive, nothing happens. Snow Leopard doesn't even say it is in use like it is meant to. It just does nothing to eject the drive.
So I end up having to yank the USB plug out.
What gives? It ejects normally as long as I don't download to it.
I have no id� whats wrong, I want to install Snow Leopard(from the external) on my Core2duo Macbook pro, which is running Leopard at the moment.
I have a Snow Leopard image, and I have used Disc utility to partition the external hard drive (GUID), and I assume the partition and install went well on the external, because in Disc start the external appears as OSX 10.6.
Then the problem: The macbook wont boot from the newly made external it just gives me this sign (of course without the colours).
I have tried to start the macbook normal, and with the option key held down were the external pops up.
I have also tried to chose the external in disc start and reboot with no luck.
I have tried to start the Snow Leopard install(external) within Leopard where the install start fine, but when it reboots and wants to continue the install, the sign appears.
The external harddrive is a 5400rpm 40gb 2,5" which is only powered by the usb port maybe thats the problem?
Has any one used Disk Repair on an external hard drive? Does it erase everything?

I've been having this problem for a while now and its only with images and videos when i try to open any picture or video this msg comes up "The file couldn’t be opened because there is no such file" and i can only open it if i copied the file from my hard drive to my computer.when i open the info for the same picture (one in on the hard drive and one my computer) the one on the hard drive has nothing under "more info" while the one on my computer has a lot of details under "more info" .

I went to make a copy of an important drive and accidentally re-formatted it (re-formatted mac journaled, originally mac journaled). The drive contained a bunch of important disk image files which I need to retrieve whole. I'm fairly confident that the files are still there and only the table information got overwritten, as the re-format took about 30 seconds. None of the recovery software I've seen however, can retrieve .dmg files, or such large files (these are up to 32 gb each in size).how I can retrieve these disk image files?

I have a HITACHI touro desk 3TB external hard dive connected to my iMac OS X version 10.6.8 Every time i start up the system it stays on a grey screen until I unplug the usb of the external hard drive then the system boots up normally. I have tried connecting different usb cables, plug in to different usb ports, and nothing works. Earlier OS X retail DVD versions clearly distinguished between "Install" and "Upgrade" - correct?. I'm confused where I read Snow Leopard required an existing OS (Leopard or Tiger) to install. It appears Snow Leopard is a "full install" DVD?

I have a 2010 Mac Book Pro that I just downloaded the new OS X Lion for the upgrades ext... I haven't had any other problems except that before I downloaded the Lion my Mac would recognize my external hard drive (WD passport). And now it doesn't, I even go to the finder and it doesn't even show up under "computer" to make sure there isn't anything wrong with my external hard drive I plugged it into another mac that doesn't have Lion and it would work. My external drive has everything 1TG of everything.

I recently installed OSX Lion and everytime I plug in my WD external hard drive it disconnects it a few minutes after pluging it in. I did some troubleshooting by pluging the hard drive into another mac book that hasn't been upgraded to OSX Lion and it wasn't disconnected. I have my entire itunes library stored on this hard drive.

I would like to migrate my computer data from my current Macbook (late 2007) running Snow Leopard to a slightly newer Macbook (mid 2009) running Mavericks. While doing this I will need to implant the wiped hard drive from my current Macbook (late 2007) into the target Macbook (mid 2009) in order to have enough hard disk space for my personal data. I will then conceivably need to install OS X Snow Leopard onto the disk, since my personal data is from Snow Leopard. While I have all of the personal data from my current Macbook (late 2007) backed up on time machine, I do not have an OS X Snow Leopard CD-ROM which I imagine to be required when trying to re-image a disk from a Snow Leopard time machine backup.
So, my questions are, first, will the target Mac (mid 2009) previously running mavericks accept a wiped hard drive that was previously running Snow Leopard; second, will the additional hardware of the target Mac (ram, graphics, CPU, etc.) be in the correct software condition (regarding drivers, boot data, cache, etc.) to accept personal data from Snow Leopard; and third, can I re-image the disk implanted in the target Macbook from a Time Machine backup?

I have a Hitachi Touro USB 3.0 1TB external hard drive that has always worked on my Macbook. Formatted in FAT so it would work on both my PC and Mac. I can't remember exactly when it stopped working, but I think I had to reset my mac once as it stopped responding and the HDD was plugged in. After that it stopped showing up in Finder, but still appears in Disk Utility. It also shows up in Storage under "About This Mac". I've tried resetting my computer, ran Apple Hardware Test, and have tested the hard drive on other computers and it works fine. Just doesn't show up in Finder on my mac!!

I have 2 macs in my house.. a macbook pro and a macbook air. I have an old dell desktop running windows 7 that has a terabyte external harddrive hoooked up to it. I want to be able to use it as a network time machine drive. Both laptops are running snow leopard. I was wondering is this possible and if so, how can I do it. Currently I am able to see the desktop and the external hardrive on my network from the macs, and I am able to drag and drop onto them, however I want to be able to use time machine.

I've had my hard drive re partitioned today and all my data was dragged onto an external hard drive. connect the drive & use migration assistant to transfer everything. I understand I could drag and drop files but I want everything to be done properly through migration assistant but it won't pick up the external drive , however it's files are accessible through finder. I want to potentially upgrade my hard drive from the measly 160GB to something with more space, more current, and hopefully faster. I've been doing my homework, and the only thing that scares me is the OS. I don't want to clone my harddrive as I would love to start new. I have back ups, so anything important can be transferred, but I would really like a clean slate. That would mean installing the OS from scratch. Can I use the boot disc I made with the Lion installer to install Lion on the new drive directly? I bought my MacBook Pro with Leopard installed, and later that summer installed Snow Leopard, then last summer upgraded to Lion. I don't have the Snow Leopard discs anymore, but I wouldn't want to install each after the other.How do I go about installing that? If I have a brand new drive, there theoretically won't be anything on it, so when I get that in and turn on the computer, what will happen? Will it tell me to do something?

Just updated to 10.6 from 10.4, and one of the first things I notice is that it keeps spinning up my three external harddrives at actions that should not set them in use, like starting an application or opening the trash. It seems pretty random, though I'm suspecting it has something to do with mdworker, quicklookd or both. If anyone knows of a solution that doesn't involve unmounting the harddrives, do tell.
